As me and the kids sit here waiting to board our delayed flight back to the UK it’s given me time to think of things (people mainly) that I’ve noticed during our week break in a family resort;
- English people really don’t know how to conduct themselves, no wonder the ‘brits abroad’ have a bad reputation
- Never seen such a large collection of broccoli-boys hair cuts
- Most of the teen boys look like they’re about to drive the wrong way along a motorway
- ‘Benidorm Grans’ can’t hold their drink and cackle at 110db
- All inclusive food & drink is consumed as though their life depends on it.
- it’s a family holiday, why are you swearing like a trooper in front of not only your kids but everyone else’s too
- All the English kids wearing Barcelona, R Madrid, Bayern, Munich, Inter Miami shirts and all the non English kids wearing Man Ciy, Man Utd, Liverpool, Arsenal etc 😵💫
- There’s always at least one family who are obnoxious, entitled, loud, complaining, aggressive (kids too) and generally a right pain in the butt
- Nothing wrong with wearing nice clothes but you really, really don’t need to wear a ball gown for dinner. It’s a Jet2/TUI holiday, not the Ritz
- Nicest people I met were from Wales or the North East, Yorkshire people… time to clean up your act unless you revel in the Millwall-esque “No one likes us, we don’t care…” act.
- The hotel has ‘cup bins’ every few yards for you to put your solid plastic cups in so they are easier to collect and be washed ready for quick re-use rotation but noooo, that’s far too difficult, much easier to just leave them by the poolside along with all your other crap.
- Hotel staff are saints putting up with this all summer long
Might start looking at alternatives next year now the kids are growing up!
Anyone else got any observations/experiences from this summer?

The aim of a holiday is either to let your hair down and go mad - choices therefore could be Benidorm, Ibiza or Ayia Napa etc... Or you could have the aim to totally chill out. Deep countryside walks, yoga, mountain walks at dawn.Lake district the Alps, Pyrenees, Austrian lakes.italian lakea. Greek islands bit less mad than most Spanish destinations. Or family holidays with a bit of fun or relaxation. Caravan park, Camping Site abroad or South of France. Or even somewhere like Blackpool. Holiday entertainment.
We normally just go to Canaries in November. Dont have kids myself and my partner s daughter has her own family now.
Not sure what you expected in Benidorm.
If it wasnt the holiday for you or your family. You could have laughed at it all a little and enjoy the madness of it all. Those type of holidays been going on in Benidorm since the beginning of time. Probably your experience was worse though than being angry about it all though.
Sounds like you need another holiday to recover.....
If you booked it online with Tui, next time I would advise you go into the nearest branch and say what type of holiday and place you want and your budget and they can be very helpful. [Post edited 29 Aug 14:35]

I wasn’t in Benidorm. ‘Benidorm’ was used in reference to characters on the TV show. We were in the Canaries though.
I did enjoy it as it was me and the kids and my observations were just that, observations, none of it actually affected me, just interested in observing. I started the thread whilst waiting in the airport to come home and the flight was delayed and it was interesting to see how some people were behaving (I.e arguing with the airport staff as if it was their fault there was a 45 minute delay) and it got me thinking about the broader behaviour in general over the previous week.
The holiday was booked through a well known family holiday company and it was done so for what the kids wanted and they really enjoyed themselves.
I kept away from the rip-off excursions (such as a waterpark where you spend more time queuing, basically a wet Thorpe Park, than actually engaging) so took them on a boat trip instead and we got to see dolphins and they had great fun launching themselves off the boat via the trapeze swing once we got closer to shore.
As they get older I’ll certainly be looking at other options just for the variety as all-inclusive family resorts get a bit samey and they will grow out of it I’m sure which is when other options will serve good purpose. [Post edited 29 Aug 16:14]

Which town Limehouse? Lived in Interlaken for 8 or 9 months way back when. |
We stayed in Spiez, which was half way between Interlaken and Thun. Regular trains to both. Great views over the lake and surrounded by mountains. We went down to the lake edge and swam almost every evening as it was 30 degrees the whole week.
Walks up in to the mountains was a great way to escape everything, including the heat!
To be honest we avoided Interlaken after a short wander around as even in late May it was heaving with tourists and the price of a normal meal out was insane. |  | | |

That’s a good point about memories. The last few have all been samey… pool/beach/water slide and they’ve all blurred into one.
Salou in ‘22 maybe as me and my son went to a Barcelona game and got to see the Nou Camp before it’s renovation plus my son was wearing the newly released QPR claret & blue Barca-esque away shirt.
The only recent-ish holiday I have strong memories of was Kyrgyzstan in 2015. Quite an experience as my son was only 9 months old (and was and has always been a brilliant ‘flyer’ on planes) and I got to see quite an extraordinary country. [Post edited 29 Aug 17:22]

Now you see I'd have to totally agree with you here.
But the thing is if you push on further into other groups the Self Righteous Society would have your guts....... unless of course it's the old positive discrimination.
I'll always say that Sikh's are the hardest working, most skilfull and loyal tradesmen I've ever worked with.... would argue that all day.
However, to also say that the Arabs are the worst, rudest, obnoxious, lying Clients I've ever had gets certain people clutching their pearls and screaming "CANCEL!!!"
You note the Israeli's "are best avoided" - 100%. There's very little between them and their neighbours and the closest I ever came to having a punch up on a plane was with a group of them.
But essentially what we are saying is - it takes all sorts to make a world.
I've met some fantastic Brits abroad when I've been on holidays and that's not just the young ladies from everywhere North of Birmingham when I was a regular visitor to the Balearics as a young 'un.............. |
I joined an Arabic book group earlier this year and I have to say that it's the nicest group of people I have met in ages. |  |

Funny living here if I meet a Brit. Generally takes 5 seconds to sus out if their sound.
Coaching I meet a lot. US states regional game, good standard. Doing a game against a couple of Evertonians. I swear my accent gets more Londonish in these moments. Anyway not very friendly. Thought he was pep playing that contrived nonsense. Hit them on the break beat them 3-2.
Started moaning all we did was score 3 goals. I reminded him that’s what you’re supposed to do and did a dramatic exit. A beautiful day. [Post edited 31 Aug 17:48]

I'm in Spain in the camper van. We have previously paid to stay on campsites in the south, where there are loads of Dutch, Germans and English. But it's the English who always stand out, with their refusal to speak Spanish, and literally hoisting St George's flags on flagpoles over their caravans and motorhomes (and not just in World Cup or Euro Cup years). I have heard these people moaning about how they can't stay for more than 90 days and how much it costs to bring their dogs abroad with them after Brexit, but in the next breath saying they would vote to leave again because it would stop immigration.
Anyway, this year my wife has joined Spanish Facebook motorhome groups, and we are staying at their recommended (mostly free) campervan stops in northern Spain. What a fantastic experience. Beautiful medieval villages in gorgeous countryside, friendly Spanish people on the camper stops and in the villages and towns. Excellent cheap food and booze everywhere. And not a Union flag or St George's flag anywhere to be seen. |  | | |

I think it’s fair to say every nation has their jebends. There is something particular about groups and groups of people travelling in particular that can bring out the worst in people.
My observation from my time backpacking:
Younger Germans fun, easy to talk to. Older Germans, serious and no fun.
Younger Australians, serious and no fun. Older Australians, fun and easy to talk to.
Dutch - surprisingly rough.
Brits - a complete mix bag. I did observe on a few occasion the keep calm and carry on characteristic, which I was surprised I had in me and I was also pleased to see compared to other hysterical groups.
Americans - like the Brits a complete spectrum from the most annoying typical clueless yank to the most friendly, interesting etc.
Asians (Chinese/Japense) awful. Sense of superiority and entitlement. No respect for culture. For example when I was in Australia they were the only ones climbing Uluru. Our tour guide told us we could but that it would be really disrespectful to do so. Obviously nobody did it, but the Asian’s didn’t care, plus they love to do these things in the most inappropriate gear!
As I said, these were just my observations and are obviously gross generalisations. |  | | |

I've had plenty of all inclusive holidays and haven't had the experience described in the original post.Always get a few idiots but in the main always enjoyed those with the kids.
We just spent a week at a Eurocamp in Italy. Honestly, apart from the food, it could have been anywhere, as it felt quite secluded. We didn't venture out much because the nearest town was a drive away but the pools were great for the kids, and it was right on the beach which was excellent. We also stayed in a really nice lodge. It was a bit like Butlins abroad but with lots of Germans rather than English. Beer was fantastic as well and finally found the time to read Ray Eatons latest QPR book which was really good. |  | | |
