Let's face it, pretty much all mainstream films all trickle their way to one or two caricatured or stereotyped characters with accentuated traits playing out formulaic plots. I guess that is the nature of the industry. However, what would you say is the most realistic film you've ever seen ? From England mine would be 'I Swear' and from overseas 'Amores Perros' the Mexican trilogy about dog-fighting, the rich couple and the homeless man. [Post edited 28 Aug 17:54]

Apocalypto. Probably in my all time top 5 favourite films. Its not historically accurate (apparently!) And it turns into a formulaic chase movie. But its as realistic glimpse into that brutal Mayan time and world as you're gonna get on film i think.

There’s a Chinese film called “Blind Shaft” a devilish tale of conmen and skullduggery in Chinese coal mines. It’s grim out East, but it’s brilliantly made. Unsurprisingly, quickly banned in China, but may have led to a crackdown on wildcat mines. On YouTube, give it a few minutes and you’ll be hooked.
I used to be a prison visitor and I wasn’t convinced by the interview scene in Adolescence. There were a long list of safety rules for civilian visitors, including always sitting closest to the door, but number one was anything can be a weapon, especially hot liquids. [Post edited 29 Aug 10:27]

Paw Patrol: The Dino movie. Apparently based on a true story and as far as social realism goes, I can't see it being bettered. It's a brutal watch at times. |  |

Your prison reference has reminded me of Paul Hamann’s documentary film Fourteen Days In May, first shown on the BBC in 1987.
It recounted the last two weeks in the life of Edward Earl Johnson, a black man convicted of rape and murder (despite protesting, with dignity, his innocence to the end) and his relationship with British anti-capital punishment attorney Clive Stafford Smith.
Powerful, and deeply moving, it’s stuck with me all these years and even now it’s hard not to shed a tear when I think of it.

It can only operate where you have a flawless justice system and sufficient safeguards against wrongful executions. It certainly should not operate anywhere in the USA where the justice system is weighted against the disadvantaged.

My Mrs hadn’t seen any of the seven up series so watched the first three last night, will do the next three tonight, it’s still an eye opener.
