Unbeaten away, struggling at home 12:56 - Oct 10 with 3459 viewsStainrod

Struggling to assess where we are.

We are unbeaten away because that defensive nucleus of Dunne, JCS and Ronnie in front of Prince Charles must be as good as any in the league. Really superb, and in turn protected by Madsen and Kamara who is a revelation in being able to get us up the pitch.

Smyth is also an unsung hero at just driving us forward and relieving pressure.

If we can get draws at the likes of WH and WBA with the occasional 3 points away at teams we get on the break that is more than good enough in terms of away form.

But I honestly don’t know where we will pick up enough wins if we can’t beat those “lesser” teams at home when we have more than 50% possession.

Will enough goals come at home?

We are creating chances but maybe our strikers just not clinical enough?

Can Madsen recapture a bit of that sparkle from last season and really boss a game?

If Chair comes back and Poku continues to grow, might we be OK?

At around the 10 game mark am cautiously optimistic, even excited, but I can’t honestly predict where we finish with even vague accuracy.

I think we will soon give another team a right tanking 4 or 5 goals to nil.

I’m hoping the lack of Matt Clarke will help us. He was just brilliant at their place last season and seemed to be everywhere at once heading out every ball that came into their box. On the down side they’ve only won three of their last twelve away games and you know what we’re like about being charitable. But even a draw would be an improvement against last year’s efforts cos we got zero points against them last season.

I am a bit concerned about the number of draws we’re racking up and our relative drought in front of goal. But I also hate ‘must win match’ or ‘six pointer’ being trotted out so early in the season. Way too many matches to come.

We fix the injury situation and start scoring ( I think they are linked) and we could be going places.

Apologies for stating the bleedin’ obvious.

Did I ever mention that I was in Minder?

Think you've misread the dimensions there Kensal. You've quoted QPR's dimensions in Yards, against West Ham's which is in Metres.

QPR Dimensions: 112 yards long x 72 yards wide (102m x 66m)

WHU Dimensions: 114.8 yards long x 74.4 yards wide (105m x 68m)

So West Hams' is a couple of metres or so bigger in length and girth.

If you can’t go down, feel the girth…

Those possessed by devils, try and keep them under control a bit, can't you ?

You're quite right, well spotted.

Obviously I was taking basic competence in consistency of measurement for granted!

Sorry Connell, but the citation of that old chestnut all but guarantees a pathetic defeat.

When you spell it out like that it sounds like there's nothing in it in terms of pitch size.

But if you calculate the whole playing area:

West Ham = 105 * 68 = 7,140 sq meters

QPR = 102 * 66 = 6732 sq meters

So West Ham's pitch is 408 square meters bigger than ours.

To put that in perspective you could put four new build 3 or 4 bedroom houses on a 408 square meter plot.

https://www.new-builds.co.uk/b

So it's not a myth, we really do have a small pitch.

Yes, I'm hoping we can make the stretch for a new striker in January even if it means we have to sell to finance it. Unfortunately injuries are also beginning to make us look short in both senses on the wings.

Respectfully, I think the suggestion we buy another striker in Jan is a bit mad. We have two strikers who knocked 10+ goals each in their first seasons at this level, who are ripe to kick on. Only a few months ago, we were arguing over how to play both of them at once or which one to drop. Get them fit again and Kone + Burrell and a supporting cast of Lloyd, Kolli, and the spirit of Obikwu, should be more than enough at this level.

If the Club have ambitions to reach the top 8 this season then it looks like we need a better striker to me. Both Kone and Burrell have gone back so far this season, Kone obviously, but Burrell has not shown the turbo charged pace he had prior to his hamstring injury last season. He's not been winning the ball on the press like he did before the injury, unfortunately, and he's injured again with who knows what. I don't see either scoring a lot for a while, at least until they are fully fit and back to their best. As you say Kolli and Lloyd are support/back-up, and we've barely seen Obikwu. Hope of course one of them at least starts scoring regularly, starting tonight.

Yeah hear what you are saying. We certainly saw in the Warbs era that “looking after the football” (ie passing it slightly nervously back and forth across the back line) didn’t achieve all that much.

The issue tho is different one: how do we break down teams who simply don’t want the ball and sit back?

Agreed.

If we ever were successful, more and more teams would sit back. We have to have that tool in our box.

I think we have turned a corner as far as lame arsed, miserable defeats are concerned.
This team is made of sterner stuff now.

Still well short in the striker department and that will definitely be our undoing this season. Fit or not, Kone is not the answer as he just doesn’t have the “tools”.

Kolli now has his chance. Tonight is the night to take it.

You are fully correct.........we need another striker.

Kolli is not good enough & nor is Lloyd and never will be. Kone is, and whilst had a fair early part of last season, has just not produced it for a long time and having seen him a lot more is pretty limited. Obikwu is an unknown. Burrell is a danger and may improve and worth his place.

We need a striker, 100%.
