Rampant R's to Brum Rush The Show Match Thread on 19:26 - Oct 17 by BrianMcCarthy

I thought we lacked the necessary hunger, belief and work-rate today.
Defeat looked likely from very early on, and a few players were extremely lucky not to be subbed for their pathetic efforts at getting back to protect the house.

Not getting down about it or anything, but I would think there'd be harsh words by the defenders aimed at some of those who were supposed to give them cover.

It’s a bit harsh to say across the board we lacked those qualities Brian. Bearing in mind we’ve got players coming back from injury and we’ve had a tough week and we playing a team that was assembled for over £60 million (plus loan players) we certainly had players that were putting in a shift.

I think our entire defence plus Charles, Kamara and Smyth were all putting in a shift although some looked a bit weary. Vale was a cardboard cut out and I think he should have helped out far more when they were overloading Adamson on the right hand side, sometimes he was trying to cover three players when they were bringing Stansfield over. Poku was also not tracking back enough or doing enough of the hard work.

I’m pretty sure Kolli can’t lead the line on his own without someone like Lloyd supporting him, at least right now and against better opposition. He looks absolutely lost and gives the ball away in dangerous positions as he thinks he can hold onto possession like Chair can but he’s not Chair. But I think he did put some effort in and it’s a shame Llloyd wasn’t there as an outlet and to occupy the defenders more.

It’s more than they have a huge amount of quality in their side and we’d probably have to be at our best and with more of our squad available and not playing them away at the end of a three match week. Which I think is what you’d expect when you’re playing a £60 million side when yours cost surely less than half that. Sometimes you just have to accept that on the day the opposition had a better team. But even then we had some decent chances from Poku who cocked up a header when in a great position, Kolli a couple of times and Kemper when a great cross came in. We weren’t destroyed but they were definitely better on the day.

I was worried that people were getting carried away when we were as high as fourth. Because it invariably means they overreact when we lose a match (not aimed at you this bit Brian, it’s a theme across the MB). I much prefer Stephan’s view about not getting too excited when we win and too down when we lose.

I absolutely agree that it doesn't apply to all players, Nixy, which is why I said that I thought the defenders might like an honest word with some of the players who were supposed to give them cover. But it's a team game, so I made a comment about the team.

I also think that it's fair to bring up fitness and availability again as possible mitigating factors for some of the players yesterday e.g. in the build-up to the second goal, neither Kamara or Smyth picked themselves up and sprinted back. That's completely out of character for Smyth, and - based on evidence so far - probably for Kamara too.

Which is why I'm not too down about yesterday.

P.S. It was also a Saturday game after a midweek game, and we often lack drive and belief in those as we know. I thought we did again yesterday (couldn't help noticing that our official comms mentioned yet again the dreaded phrase "three-game-week" in its very first sentence, followed quickly by "difficult place to come to" (Brum's home record before yesterday was W1 D4 L0 and our record in our last ten visits is W3 D3 L4). This is a common theme in the club, and while I really rate Stéphan, it will take him a while to change that culture and raise our belief in ourselves as a team and as a club. So, I'm not getting too down about it, or calling for the stocks for anyone.

Edit - quick grammar check.

Good post Nix. Level headed and accurate.

We were not at anywhere near full strength, Smyth has been great but was poor on the day, constantly looking for fouls but not getting them. He looked out on his feet to me.

Kamara battled game-fully but was outnumbered and overran in midfield.

Vale is a concern. He has technical ability but it was difficult to get a handle on what his role was and what contribution he was making. Didn’t provide much of anything defensively or offensively.

Ultimately Birmingham were better balanced, physically imposing at the back and clinical up front.
They deserved the win all day long.

Injuries and a tough schedule has caught up with us and it was always likely to happen.

We need to recover and hopefully get one or two back from injury. We do only have one proven, reliable striker and he is fragile. Kone, Lloyd, Kolli and Obikwu as back up will not be enough to keep us in touch with the top six.

We might squeeze into a 7/8th spot on the back of our defence and midfield, but the lack of a decent striker will hinder our progress.

Will be interesting to see if JS can bring someone in during the Jan transfer window. A good loan signing could make all the difference.

Fair enough Brian if you didn’t mean the team but that’s what you started with saying. When I say team I really mean the whole team rather than one or two players. But difference in how we interpret things so fine.

But I do think context in which games you win or lose is important. So Birmingham have played Bristol City, Middlesbrough, Wolves and Southampton in their other home matches, so more difficult teams, so it’s not like they’ve been playing dross at home and drawing but then play us at home and are magnificent. They’ve also brought in quite a few players so have probably been gelling and are now starting to click, hence moving up the table,

I genuinely don’t think yesterday was down to a lack of belief. I think it was down to not having enough quality on the day and our better available players being weary. Birmingham were not just good they were also very industrious yesterday. We can sometimes overcome our lack of quality in certain areas with effort and good organisation. But less so when we’re tired and we’re playing a team with quality, very few injuries and effort.

BTW…we chose the Anchor in Digbeth for pre match drinks, primarily because it was the first one in the area to open. That said, we knew it was a good choice right away as opening time was greeted with a loud blast of Anarchy in the UK over the airwaves, the music selection pretty much mirroring most of my record collection for the next three hours. Old school boozer, friendly natives, pints average six quid a go, not a bad stop for future visits.

Fair enough, Nixy.

We agree on most things.

On a by-the-by, I overheard a great one on the recent hiking holiday. I was walking behind two women, who I just KNEW were Irish and who were clearly having a healthy - shall we say - debate!

I took out one earphone so I could earwig, and heard the following beautiful exchange.

Woman 1: "We're basically agreeing on everything, just from different angles"
Woman 2: "I disagree about that as well!"

I smiled, they smiled.
Then they kept on disagreeing!

My possibly unreasonable addition to the reasoned debate is, for all the mitigating factors quite reasonably mentioned above, JS needed to change more than he did yesterday.

I know we don't know all the ins and outs of how people have been training, all the loadings and whatnot but Kolli clearly needed help, Smythy needed a break (was shaking his head at himself in frustration) etc. Give Scarlett half an hour and let BOS deal with something new, get Madsen on to try to thread a few balls through, rejig it to get Kolli and Kone working together. Something.

I don't get the big bucks but it reminded me of the Pompey away game last season when we needed an extra body in midfield all game and never did.

We seemed to operate a 5-4-1 which meant moving Edwards back. Neither Smyth nor Poku got in the game until we were 2-0 down. Kamara lost the ball more often than he had in all the previous games combined. And Vale was anonymous. So, without doing anything special, Brum ran the midfield. That was where the game was lost, IMHO.

Add in Kone and Kolli getting in each others way for the 1st and Dunne being moved up front leaving us short handed for the 3rd.

Bad day at the office. Gather ourselves, learn lessons and go again.
