Vale of Tears 19:01 - Oct 18 with 4384 viewsJules4367

I am getting more and more frustrated with Mr Vale. Yes, he has now scored a goal and I expect everyone will say how good he is but he consistently ranks low or is bottom on performance assessments. Why? Clearly he has ability but something appears to be lacking or am I being unfair? Whenever there is a failed tackle that lets the opposition through on goal, a miss hit pass, a pass to nowhere or a useless cross from a free kick or corner or a shot that goes way way over the bar at the opposite end of the pitch (and my eyes at that distance cannot see who it was) I now ask the people around me, was that Vale again? and they simply shrug their shoulders as f to say 'of course' and nod!
What is anyone saying to him after such performances?

I looked up the meanings of 'Vale' and it says "a long low depression between high points" and Latin for "Good bye!" (note that is Good bye NOT Good BUY!)
I really want him to do well but somehow it seems to be taking far far too long for hm to correct the things that a lot of people who rate the players can see him doing week in week out!

Yes, he DID score a goal on Wednesday but, on balance, does he do more to help the team or hinder?

I hear you, but he wasn't picked so he was unavailable to take set pieces.
I'm sure you get my point.

Yes I do Brian......but you know my stance on 'crap' like this......if you are fit for the bench then you are fit to play otherwise do not pick him and give a young lad some experience of first team football/environment.

I agree, Gazza, at least partly.
There has to be some reason for Madsen's situation on Saturday, but I have no idea apart from guessing.

I can see there might be a need, sometimes maybe, to put a lad on the bench if it's decided he can't do ninety minutes. But I have no idea what that player is still doing there at 1-0 down or 2-0 down. At that point, if you still can't use him, then I'm with you that he should have stayed at home and his place given to someone else.

If it's a case that something happened in the build-up to the game and it was decided at the last minute that he was now unavailable, then I would imagine that he should be in the stand not on the bench.

I don't know.

At the moment Vale doesn’t do enough in his good patches to allow himself to disappear for long spells in games.
Doesn’t seem physically strong enough a lot of the time and in my opinion doesn’t use the best of the talent he obviously has when on the ball. He is youngish but I’m not sure he will improve enough. I am happy to be proved wrong but ….

Yeah, I think Madsen was probably unwell at short notice, as the selection looked a bit like Port Vale, where maybe it was under rehearsed?

I think they have to name the squad very early on, so I don't think there is much opportunity to swap out illness for a stand-by, maybe on a home game, but away?

Those dead balls gave me Barton vibes, very weak corners, a pro should beat the first man more often than not, but to be fair when the oppo are a lot bigger we should also have a plan B cued up ready to use.

Vale is a bit of a curate's egg unfortunately - but when he's good, he is good.

In mitigation he's definitely not a like for like player with Madsen, playing in a midfield two, that's not going to work. But play him at the top of a midfield three or out wide, he should be fine.

For me he is better out wide cutting inside, he seems to struggle when played as an out and out midfield player

Sorry Mick, don't mean to be rude but just trying to make a point without 'beating around the bush'....and being woke/liberal!!!

It’s ok mate. Peace and love.

I know you know the game - we are so close to moving on, and so close to slipping back.

Urrrssss.

Did I ever mention that I was in Minder?

Big Fan of Vale and think I've said on here before I believe he has one of the highest ceilings in our current Squad. Definitely haven't seen the best of him so far this season which I don't think has been helped by the inconsistencies in where he's being picked to play. Stephan's tried him a few times as an 8 in a Midfield 2 and to me he doesn't look comfortable there at all yet, then next game he can be back out wide or in the 10, or all 3 in one game, so not able to build any momentum.

He's only just got to 40 Championship appearances (14 Goal contributions, 5G and 9A!!!) and there's been a handful and a half of times during those when he's played as a 10 or off the right hand side that he's comfortably been the best player on the pitch. I get the feeling he needs everything to being going well around him to really flourish otherwise he can sink, but expect more belief to come with more experience.

Think it's okay to be frustrated because we've seen the level he can get too but no need to give up on him anytime soon.

Tell me......how will you tell Vale that he isnt going to play away matches but you will play at home!!!! And how will you tell the player who played away that he isnt playing at home next week.

Abosolute nonsense, I have read some nonsense on the MB but that one is 'top of the tree'!!!!.

Well he seems to have his best games when we’re in the ascendancy, his worst games when we’re up against it.

It was a generalisation but by and large home games mean ascendancy and away games you’re up against it.

If we could find his best position that might help.

Agree that overall his performances have been less than ideal recently, but he has shown flashes of quality and is consistently available. More "set up our sighs" than "mourning and weeping" if you will excuse my niche Catholic references. And, if you will indulge my Latin humour, not quite time to say "Harvey atque Vale".

Do we know how he broke his back - very unusual if that was done on a football field, Bosh.

He seemed to do it over a few games where he landed on the same part of his back. An MRI revealed a bone stress injury to his lower back and that the bone was fractured. Apparently a lot of younger players are getting similar injuries on hard training pitches. Harvey's was a particularly bad one and he had to stop playing immediately.

Never knowingly right.

Very much a poor man's Cole Palmer for me.

He's a moments player and you just hope he has more moments than not. Clearly something there, he's just got to find a way to up the moments count and impose himself more. For me he's someone I'd sum up by his shots: he tries to culture them in when sometimes, you really need to give it a bloody good wallop...if you know what I mean.

Speaking of potentially talented midfielders, what's happening with Isak? Thought we should have seen an appearance before now.

You are right, we are close, best overall squad we have had for a few years, keep them fit and we have a chance........play well and we have a chance to move on but the league is very close indeed. I am hoping for a play-off position but play like we did at B'ham and that will make my ambition a lot tougher.

He's not even a poor man's Patsy Palmer!

I have every sympathy with him on his back.... total and utter actually being a fellow sufferer.
Maybe that is his issue? Once you've been in that level of pain with your back I'm not sure you ever trust yourself again.
