| Paul Smyth up top 17:49 - Oct 24 with 6147 views | QPRcounsellor | I have wanted to see this for a long time. He has the same attributes as Burrell. Pace, power, causes havoc, can score goals. If Burrell is out then it seems like an obvious choice and it worked a treat . Him and Kone were superb as two strikers today. Paul Smyth is absolutely one of my favourite players. How boring that on virtually every QPR podcast, it's always said "Smyth gets a lot of stick from fans but......". Please let's stop this. He doesn't. No one I know ever gives him stick. He's unanimously popular where I sit. Loved him from day 1 v Cardiff that time. Surely one of the first on the team sheet now. Cheers. | | | | |

I'm hungover instead and I agree wholeheartedly

| And Bowles is onside, Swinburne has come rushing out of his goal , what can Bowles do here , onto the left foot no, on to the right foot
That’s there that’s two, and that’s Bowles

People talk about end product but I'd say that counts? Love him to bits, really joyous seeing him performing like this. I said on the match thread seeing him up front with Kone was giving me Les and Bradley Allen vibes. Fair play to JS seeing the opportunity to play him there, will be interesting to see if this becomes a regular feature, and whether he's now competing with Burrell for the same role
| Paul Smyth up top on 11:27 - Oct 27 with 712 views | Stainrod | Can someone with more statistical savvy than me say how many goals he is responsible for this season please? 3 goals, 3 pens “won” and an assist on Saturday. Can’t recall if he has had any other assists this season? Even if not I make that contributing towards 7 goals in (what?) 11 league games? | | | |
| Paul Smyth up top on 11:36 - Oct 27 with 678 views | stevec | Was it really a 442? To me, Vale was tucked in, in what is essentially a three across the middle. Poku was dropping back when required but for me, Smyth was part of a three up front and told to run into that 2nd position whenever he could. It worked brilliantly, but I say it was a 433 that regularly broke out of that. Whatever, Smyth is a different player when he receives facing the goal. | | | | Login to get fewer ads

Excellent point which I hadn't quite put my finger on. I used to say Smyth is useless on the left because he wasn't good enough if forced to come inside. But creating a system when he receives facing the goal ... that's what has made a big difference. He has simply been fantastic and it's a nice arc after he wasn't used enough, I thought, in his first spell.

I think it was 442. or Maybe 4-5-1 at times. We were leaving Smyth up front on his own at times with Kone dropping back sometimes when they had the ball. For me it was definitely Kone and Smyth up top, with 4 midfielders behind. Smyth was running everywhere though, it looked like he almost had a free role upfront.

I'd love to see Smyth run at Manning on Saturday, reckon he could win another penalty there [Post edited 27 Oct 15:24]

Winning fouls is like his superpower. I often said in the past that you could tell what sort of game he was going to have after his first claim for a foul. If the ref doesn't buy it he's in for a long afternoon. I did wonder on Saturday whether the ref would be influenced by his recent run of penalties and not give it on that basis. Slightly tangentially I was amazed on Saturday, and then remembered how it was the same all last season, by how resolute the ref was in not awarding any foul on Kone, it was absurd at times.

100% the officials will be talking about him in their pre-match briefing. Smyth is always looking for that foul, but this season rather than putting his back into defenders and falling over he is running at pace, committing the oppo and giving the ref something to think about. Thats why he works so well in a counter attacking team, if hes running at full pelt and you're the last man he's going to make you make a decision evertime. Such a hard working player, really coming into a purple patch under Julien. Imagine if you could put his experience back into his 20 year old body, what a player you'd have then! I think he is living proof that attitude over ability will give you a longer career, and in fact, the ability has come later in life with all that hard work. Credit where its due, he's my player of the season so far
