I've managed to blag my way speaking castellano Spanish in Argentina, Cantonese in Hong Kong, French, Scouse, and Manc. But I'd struggle to string an English sentence together speaking to her tbf.

My wife is Quebecois, and I can swear like a good 'un in her local lingo. After that, I am struggling.
I do have a little bit of Spanish in the old locker. While a year wandering Latin America saw me leave rather capable truth be told, the actual foundations were built with a stunningly gorgeous teacher at Instituto Cervantes in Manchester.
It was noticeable that the attendance of the male students on the course was exemplary, especially as classes were on Saturday mornings! Then after the foundation course was done, we went to the next level, and with it, an absolute battle axe! Male attendance dropped off as a result.
So, in my experience, there is a correlation between effective learning of a foreign language, and the phwor factor of the person teaching you.
I also advise not trying to learn from a spouse. Like teaching your wife or husband to drive, always ends in a row.

We had a Swedish law lecturer at poly. Every male student in the business school managed to get to her lectures. The way she use to say "Law of Tort" or "Invitation to treat", would resurrect even the most hungover libido.
