Thought it deserved it’s own. Predictions?

Especially keen to hear from Rs not based here and outside the bubble.

The feeling across The Irish Sea is that England should win this comfortably. The Irish soccer media is incredibly Anglo-centric, so it's not surpising that they are backing England with both head and heart, but what's struck me is the continuation and perhaps acceleration of the trend where the Irish public are increasingly backing England. Not all of them, obviously, but a large portion of them, especially amoung younger fans.

Many of the older lads of my age have still no problem following English soccer clubs and hating the English National Team, which always makes me smile and scratch the head. Old habits will die hard, it seems.

Personally, no matter what team Southgate picks, I'd expect England to dominate this one in all sectors. After that it's down to finishing, luck and the officials.

Hoping for a 2-0 win.

edit - the inevitable spell-check.

West Brits 😆

I think this England side is a lot more likeable than the Terry / Cole / Lampard years. I wonder if that explains it a bit

Have RTE got it this time?

RTE have all the games, and are doing a good job on the whole - very well researched.

I think the England Team neing likeable is a good point. I also think the passing years since the end of violence is a key factor.

England’s toughest game of the tournament so far and we’ll learn a lot more about this team’s chances tonight. I think it’ll be close but England to edge it in extra time or penalties.

Not sure but I think where England should have the edge is if it goes late having probably more to pick from going forward as the game stretches later on, especially with 2 key players out for Senegal.

Will we learn a lot more about England?

I am not sure really - unless they probably lose what you don't want in last 16 is extra time but if they do I can see the 5 subs benefitting England - especially with some of the players they can being on.

Bonjour mes amis,

Well, the problems for either England or Senegal is currently on before my eyes at Chez PlanetH: Mbappe and France!

Le Francais look good, and they know it. They're playing with a couple of gears to spare.

I expect Senegal to be fast, furious, and fearless, just what England don't like. If today's game goes into extra time, it plays right in France's favour.

Allez les rosbifs.

2-1 I'd happily take now in regulation time.

Just to even it out, I'm going for a shock 2-1 win for Seny's Senegal. Not that I want that result, but given the seismic shocks we've had already, it wouldn't be a total surprise to have another. And Senegal are the reigning African champions. Gonna be a tough game. Looking forward to it.

Re learning, it’s all subjective but we just saw France go up a gear to win vs Poland. Mbappe again stamping his mark on the tournament.

Can England follow suit and put in a strong performance or will they stumble their way through or crash out. Hopefully the former.

never confident with England, have got the usual horrific nerves before a big game, feeling sick with worry.

Tough game tonight, personally hope he goes with Saka and Foden and uses Rashford from the bench, think England will win but bound to be a close tense one.

Sky reported Saka is starting earlier but don’t know how seriously we should take that.

At risk of bringing politics into this, it seems to me that every Irish generation gets more self-confident and more forward-looking. Maybe the younger ones feel less need to define themselves against England because they are happy just being Irish?

Big call by Beale to drop Saint Marcus.

If it starts going nipples north early doors, he'll pitch for the Senegal job in the second half.

No Mount should help us to a comfortable win: 2-0, two for Kane.

Just realised if we play France in next round on Saturday I’m at our work Xmas shindig: I bet lots of others are in the same situation.

FIFA at it again.

Very true.

Wasn’t so long ago Heskey was nailed on and Michael Ricketts and Darius Vassell were regulars.

Great problem to have.

I think there's something in that, Rosie, and I;m only talking about the South naturally.

Maybe a conversation for another day, though? I don't want to take away from the game.
