Surely this is a bit of posturing though to get more rent or something? What's he actually going to do with it otherwise? Not going to get another sports club in the door are they?

Weird.

I think it’s all part of a bigger plan tbh , I mean what’s he gonna do with a ready built stadium with nobody using it ?

Aye. Definitely a negotiating position.

Owning a football club gives him the exposure and ego boost that no other business gives him.

Devil's advocate.

At some point Cov sold their ground and someone got the money. Whether that was ethical / legal, I don't know, but the moment they sold Highfield Road was the moment that has led to this point. This is what happens when you don't own your property, the landlord can up the rent.

Ashley may have questionable morals, but other than that, surely he is well within his rights to ask for more? This is probably one of the main reasons he is rich, but it is the fault of those that sold the stadium, not him.

If we ever move, we HAVE to own the new ground otherwise we'll be in the same position.

... or have I missed something?

Can we go out yet?

Agree with all of that. Wrote at the time the Ricoh was a crazy deal.

Not saying I disagree with this and I am no fan of venture capitalism in general or Ashley in particular........

BUT, I think he might be an OK owner of Coventry City (as I am sure it's the club he is ultimately after.) He actually sunk a lot of money into Newcastle initially, it just wasn't enough to satiate the Geordie masses (sometimes only beheaders will do!)

He is also from that part of the world I think (and not a 'Cockney' as the Geordies had him.)

You're not wrong the damage was done ages ago but the following section from the article suggests that he's being slightly underhanded with not honouring their existing agreement.

"Frasers do not believe they are bound by the previous agreement with the stadium's former owners, Wasps rugby club, who went into administration on 18 October.

However, Coventry said that discussions with Frasers Group prior to their purchase of the ground led them "to understand the existing terms would continue unchanged"."

To be fair, Geordies consider most people south of Durham to be cockneys.

Fans have never had a legitimate say in any of it, and yet collectively have paid 100 fold more into the club than any of these con artists.

I hope they form a AFC Wimbledon / FC United type team and start again.

Agree. But as always it'll be up to the lawyers to see if there has been any contract breach. If there has been, he'll get sorted, but if not, they are bound by the contract. If they assumed that their deal would continue with new owners, but haven't checked, more fool them.

Come on, the club hasn't gone yet. They just don't have their own ground. Pay a different landlord in a different stadium and go from there...

They'll be back there sooner than you know, but will have to pay more. This is just bluster to screw them for more pennies...

They’ve been using Burton‘s ground mate. Would you be happy travelling to Southanpton to watch the Rs?

Ashley playing a blinder here to squeeze current club owners into selling to him at the price he wants BUT!!!! as the Cov fan interview here alluded to, the current owners are proper obstinate fcukers as well.

The fans will suffer whilst the jousting goes on but I've no time for that club so I won't weep.
Eventually Ashley will own the lot and they'll be a stronger club for it.

Cherish and enjoy life.... this ain't no dress rehearsal

Raises the question, what is a football club? If it doesn't include a ground or at least a long term lease then maybe it really shouldn't have membership of the EFL?

Didn't they need to pull 22,000 crowds in League One to cover the rent?

I can't think there is any chance of any Championship club.paying more than that in rent.

I believe the CCFC badge has an elephant on it. Is it a white elephant?

They needed to pull 22k+ in the Championship to break even and each game they didn’t do that was a tiny step closer to relegation. They probably then needed a full capacity every home game in League one to break even and cover the losses which, of course, would never happen.

In fact, Coventry City have never had a full capacity football game at the Ricoh (or whatever it’s called)
