Next EFL TV deal - some good news, some alarming news 20:04 - Feb 23 with 11826 viewsNorthernr

There's a story in the Mail* tomorrow about the EFL's next TV deal which goes on the block shortly.

*As it's the Mail, they'll have picked out the most extreme scenarios and extrapolated them out into the most outlandish possibilities under their editorial policy of every story should make the reader afraid, angry, or preferably both, but still...

The good news is that new players in the market such as Viaplay and DAZN, as well as BT becoming part of the wealthy Warner Bros Discovery group, means there is competition for the EFL rights this time, which will drive up the price, as opposed to last time where Shaun Harvey took it upon himself to just hand the whole thing over to Sky for five years. They reckon the fee will go past £200m this time, doubling our TV revenues.

However, some of the things we're going to trade for that...

All the fixtures across the three divisions have been divided into 20 packages. In short, every single EFL game will be available to buy.

They will attempt to override ban on televising 3pm Saturday games, however the Premier League is likely to object to this. The EFL can force an override because the ban only applies when 50%+ of the Football League games are taking place at 3pm on a Saturday, so if the EFL moves 60% of its fixtures to, say, Sunday, the ban would then not apply anyway. Every weekend would basically look like the FA Cup Third Round, with the whole programme cut up in groups of half a dozen fixtures into a dozen kick off times across Fri-Sat-Sun-Mon.

They could well sell these 20 packages across multiple broadcasters, so you may need a Sky, BT, Viaplay, DAZN subscription to watch QPR games.

In short, you think we get a lot of fixtures pissed about with now, just wait...

I've always worried that ( half jokingly ) one day football will be TV only with computer generated crowd noise.
Didn't a club some years ago, plagued by really low gates, play crowd noise over the tannoy to create atmosphere. The league stamped on it.

Gonna be awful for fans who go to games

They will blatently move half the games to Sunday with more than likely hardly any notice

I think just make all games 3pm Sat and forget the blackout

How does the Mail story square with QPR+. This year's subscription was up by over 20% and about 1/4 of games are not available.

When would this new contract start ? The article says 2024. So is that the start of the 2024 -2025 season or halfway through the 2023 - 2024 season.

Be very interesting won’t it, because if every game is for sale are they saying to these broadcasters you have to pay for it but the clubs can sell them too? Or is that the end of QPR+?

The end of QPR+ would be a disaster as an overseas fan. Between that, LFW and the QPR Pod, you can feel a part of it. But taking away actually being to watch the games would be devastating.

Does anyone know how much profit is generated to the club via QPR+, I would imagine it’s rather insignificant.

Ultimately, TV rights are critical to the future of EFL clubs, we just need to ensure the fees secured are as high as possible. As much as I prefer games to be at 3pm on a Saturday, we have to recognise that if we want to retain that then the club would need to raise the shortfall by it’s only other means, in other words, put the burden on our ticket prices and to replace that extra £5 million would require us to accept a doubling of our season ticket prices. I suspect, like myself, the vast majority would not want to go that route.

In the end, if the new tv rights mean games right across the weekend, for the sake of the club we have to go with the flow.

I notice the Mail has no reference about redistribution of tv income from Premier League clubs directly to EFL clubs. If that’s the case then the EFL could easily find itself on the wrong end of another ITV digital scenario.

Damn right on the ITV digital scenario. I just don't think there is enough demand for EFL football on TV to warrant a separate subscription. Other than when QPR are on, I barely bother with it. Maybe the odd Friday night game but mostly, it doesn't really draw me in.

You can bet your life Sky Sports won't be dropping their monthly fee despite not showing it. They'll price it the same and aquire the rights to something else to try and justify it.

I'm not entirely sure it will be a disaster for overseas fans. I currently subscribe to QPR plus and ESPN plus. I can see every QPR game ( for better or worse) as well as other EFL matches, most notably the playoffs.

ESPN is less expensive than QPR plus and I don't have to be up before 7 am on a Saturday and can watch the match after work on a weekday. No Nick and Andy but still okay.

However, if there is now going to be more competitive bidding, that could change who covers the matches and the payments. Not necessarily bad but have to see how it goes. Definitely a limited audience over here for Championship football. Content is going this way though isn't it?

I haven't costed it out but, on a per game basis, I suspect I pay more for the few matches DaZN show here in Canada, (basically the early games Sky covers) than I do for the balance on QPR+.

The "package" thing worries me. Networks work entirely based on what they believe a "football fan" might buy. They don't take into account club allegiances at all. It's quite possible some of us overseas fans might end up paying more for far, far less than we do now.

Can't help with profit Steve, but can with revenue figures

19/20 season streaming generated £143k revenue
20/21 season streaming generated £1.4m revenue.

20/21 was the "Covid" season and the matches were behind closed doors. I would assume that the revenue will have returned to much closer to the 19/20 figure.

Would absolutely love someone like Apple TV or Amazon Prime to come in and buy the rights up.
I just think there's so much you can do with EFL regarding content and brand building if you have the right broadcast partner.
Some seriously big clubs down here as well (Sunderland, Birmingham, Sheff Weds maybe Leeds and Southampton next season) to give numbers a boost.

Endless West Brom games on Sky to compete with Premier League matches they don't have is such a rubbish strategy we've had to endure for years

Cheers, pocket money really.

Not so much a funds raising opportunity for the club, more a service for the fans.

Rather than dabbling in QPR+ I suspect putting bums on comfortable seats should be the aim of the club but that involves hard graft, something that seems to be in short supply with the present set up.

'Endless West Brom games on Sky...'
That reminds me of another club that seemed always to be on Sky... at least, until its results went into decline.

Dont understand why they dont do their own package. Like the NFL do with gamepass. Have the soccer saturday/redzone bit for every game at 3pm, live games for overseas subscribers. Then have an on demand from 5pm for every game for UK subscribers

The 20/21 figure, which may not be typical, represented close to 20% of attendance revenue.

It's all very well trying to encourage attendance at fares, but for many of us QPR+ is our connection to the club we support.

If only there was a way to punish them for their greed by acquiring the product illegally.

It's like this with MMA now (in the States). You need so many subscriptions if you want to see everything. Or like how everyone had Netflix and were happy to pay but then every company wanted their own streaming service and now it's a mess.

Clive/DM say "doubling the revenue" - you're not going to get double what you get now without giving something back.

I guess that's basically it.

It won't work in the EFL but would in the PL - why not abandon all pretence and admit yes we have 'sold out' to the Broadcasters - if you want to put it like that, BUT as we don't need the gate income make all the tickets £10 each in return for the matches being played any time any day of the week. Introduce loyalty schemes to stop all the tickets going to tourists and there you have it - its a pain going to games but its only a tenner when you get there,

Big flaw in my Baldrick like plan is that it doesn't work in the EFL because the revenue still not big enough for the clubs to do that even if doubled.
