My recollection of the "holiday romance" under Ainsworth was more like being detained in a Turkish prison and being repeatedly, brutally and monotonously sodomised (and despite the positive attitude I'd say Gaz felt the same). Can't help but agree though there's an utterly inexplicable calmness around the place these days. "Back in the day..." even a 5 game bad run had us breaking out the pitchforks and flaming torches. Now...meh. It's weird.

I think there is an awful lot of risk about this summer’s transfer/signing activity. I feel we’re closer and perhaps more likely to become an Ipswich, who shuffled around this league for f*cking ages under McCarthy going nowhere before eventually dropping down. I don’t feel it’s “good” today, I feel it’s a bit “meh”. The togetherness could be there, indeed, it’s on the table to be grabbed hold of, if only Nourry (and Hoos) would bloody realise it and change tact. Instead, I suspect Marti will leave in the summer (mutual consent), most of our defence will leave, we’ll sign a load more U25s from the continent, and start the next season having doubled down on “the strategy” with some no-mark yes man as head coach bowing to Nourry’s whim. Overly pessimistic, possibly. But whatever.

For decades I used to dream of QPR playing at a packed Wembley and winning the game in the last minute and then one day along came Bobby Zamora "unbelievable" and for me that was it. Afterwards I said to myself mission accomplished whatever happens now take with a pinch of salt nothing else in life matters because you have achieved your dream. And for a while that worked we would get beat and I would say to myself don't get angry remember you have accomplished your boyhood dream so nothing matters now. However as the months turned into years I slowly got drawn back into the emotional roller coaster Nahki Wells scores a winner for Bristol City at the School end and I am a bear with a sore head all week. In the return fixture Yoann Barbet scores a last minute winner in front of the travelling fans and it is a goal I celebrated so vaingloriously with my Daughter that we will still be talking about it over Sunday Lunch in years to come. I try to tell myself stop being so emotionally involved "what will be will be" but I saw a line on this message board this week from a great Eagles classic song which sums me and my family up perfectly. Agreed, although think even our hierarchy don't have the balls to sack Marti. Feels like Nourry's still a bit of a wildcard and might be too confident to do the simple things right (renew a defender's contract) - here's to hoping the summer will have a dose of pragmatism from somewhere.

Oh come on Hunter can't we just enjoy the 'meh' for now and not have to think about the personnel cliff-drop we face this summer?? I've really not thought about Marti leaving although I know it's been mentioned on here; just not sure where he would go; either another Championship club or potentially another club in Europe. And cheers for the article Dorse, enjoyed that!

Yeah agreed with that - no matter how bad things have been I look back at the last 15 years, in that time I've seen my team raise the Championship trophy at Loftus Road and win a play off final at Wembley in probably the most dramatic fashion possible. How many other clubs have done that? So of course I want my team to do better, to improve each season. And yes I know we should aspire to promotion, to the Premier League. But I'm really not bothered, it's always about the journey rather than actual getting there, I bet Ipswich fans can't wait for this season to be over! I'll always be a QPR fan, I'll always want my team to win. But given the recent success we've enjoyed, realistically I don't think I can expect much more.

Fair enough, you may well be correct. Let's be honest, we've seen far more unlikely outcomes! For me, where we are now just feels worlds away from the Decline and fall of the Empire we witnessed across the Beale / Critchley / Ainsworth trifecta (new album released Monday).

I've got to say I still perhaps have more sympathy and respect than most(?) for Neil Critchley during his short time here. He came across as a thoroughly decent hardworking guy doing his best with a collection of individuals who, for whatever reason, weren't having him. His post-Fleetwood interview was just someone having the temerity to be honest and straightforward. I'm really pleased (and not surprised) he appears to be turning things round at Hearts. Love Marti - but Critchley could well have been one we missed.

It certainly feels better, I’m not sure I can go as far as ‘good’. What I am finding good is two week international breaks, neigh three weeks when the first game back is some unvisitable hell hole invariably positioned a good 100 miles from HQ. Even better than good these days is the three month gap between this season and next season, dreaming about the arrival of an influx of better players decked in blue and white hoops at the first home game, that really feels good. And then it all tends to become less than good.

Yeah some sympathy for Critchley who was handed a fairly toxic dressing room post-Beale; but I don't think we've missed that much more from him. He's doing an OK job at Hearts, has pulled them up the table after a terrible start to the season. But nothing really earth shattering.

"I feel we’re closer and perhaps more likely to become an Ipswich, who shuffled around this league for f*cking ages under McCarthy going nowhere before eventually dropping down." I think there's quite a few teams who seem to be stuck at this level and we are definitely one of them. Kieran Maguire on Price of Football has often referred to parachute payments as becoming like "trampoline payments" because it gives relegated teams such a head start at this level (although Luton have torn up that script and wiped their arse with it!) Last season is generally considered to be a really strong Championship with four teams head and shoulders above the rest. But the three who went up have been nowhere near good enough for the Premier League and seem certain to come back down. Which makes it look like the gap between us and the Premier League is just getting bigger. Last season also saw Birmingham drop to League 1 after 13 seasons at this level including several relegation near misses. It will be interesting to see how the returning clubs get on next season. Ipswich, Leicester and Southampton will all be expecting to at least make the playoffs. And Birmingham with their new money behind them will at the very least expect to be well clear of relegation. For the rest of us it's probably more of the same.
View from the outside – Column on 12:53 - Mar 27 with 1039 views | Rsole | Thank you, Dorse - that’s a fine effort that. I can see Marti being recruited elsewhere at the end of the season as the managerial merry go round gets lubed up. I also expect his replacement to be fully compliant with the game model and system that Nourry expects to see working each week. Clearly, that’s his strategy and I don’t think he’s going to change direction. Marti is not always compliant and even when his successful disobedience means wining, it’s seemingly not enough. That relationship can’t last much longer so the recruitment of players will most likely be compounded by a new coach/manager search and possibly another disrupted pre-season. Marti’s future may well have a knock on impact on which players re-sign and which players move on, which may be another challenge. If the senior players leave and we replace them with younger models with limited Championship experience, I would not expect much next season. I just hope that I am wrong - as my wife, Brian, often tells me I am.
