Turned 60 earlier this month. Nothing to it, birthdays always just a number to me, and although I've been semi-retired since 2021, fully since last December, didn't really batter an eyelid with it. That was until yesterday.
In 1984, I opened a bank account. A few years later I signed some forms while working for ITV for a few years. Yesterday, I received a payment into that account I opened as a teenager entitled: ITV Pension.
Then it hit me: F..k me, I am a pensioner!
Seriously, where the hell have those last 42 years gone and why has life only given me secondary level silverware with QPR and not (yet) the really good stuff?

Was 60 last Thursday. Greenford boy like you JH. The years have flown by and in the main has been a good life, a few self-inflicted fùck ups along the way, but fortunate to have built a career that I enjoyed as opposed to being in a series of jobs that were just that. Business sold two years ago now, Miss my clients but not the work. Bought a house down near the Solent which in the last year I along with the help of some builders have brought it into the 21st century, which I share with my lovely partner. My so, who has just turned 17 and is now learning to fly, hopefully will get his private pilot’s licence this summer and then next year he is looking to commence training for his commercial licence. Will cost me close on 6 figures but fùck it, I’d rather spend it now as opposed to him getting it minus 40% IHT.
As for our beloved football team, started going at the end of the 71-72 season so was lucky to see some of the best players in our history and undoubtedly the best team. Have seen five promotions, the highlight being the Warnock team and five relegations the lowlight being the start of the Holloway era in 2001 and the hideous Hughes/Redknapp relagation of 2013. Seen two cup finals, one memorable and the other well…….but dear old Loftus Road has been a constant of my life almost as supportive to me as I have been devoted to QPR. |  |

As for the opening post comment about secondary level silverware. I would still take that, the 75/76 and Venables teams, and even the few years we were in the now division 1, which I still think were some of the best seasons supporting our team, over having to sell our souls and support those C*nts from SW6 [Post edited 30 Apr 13:37]

Happy birthday mate. I’m 61 and off to Barcalona in a weeks time with 6 mates . We’ve done it for years . The all day sessions have long since gone but we can still knock a few back .
Think young even if the night time trips to the loo tell you otherwise.
Life is still good and so long as you’ve got reasonable health it should stay that way.
Stress levels should start to go down for the next three months or so until it all starts again in August . | | | |

I had a similar moment yesterday.
My father passed away at the end of 2024 and I did the eulogy at his funeral. During this I recounted the story of when he left seven year old me sitting outside the Springbok with a coke and bag of crisps while he went upstairs with his mates. We were home to Leeds and needed a point to stay up. I had strict instructions to run upstairs when the doorman went for a break or turned his back. This was 1978, so no chance of any danger!
Anyway, I subscribe to the futbology app. and this flashed up yesterday with a message '48 years ago you were here' 48 years? Where has that gone? To be clear, it showed me attending the game, not sitting outside the Springbok.

where have the years gone indeed....68 this november...
started watching qpr in 1968, first game against notts forest at home, a 2-1 win out of only 4 that season. in fact by august the season after, i'd seen more scottish clubs play qpr more than english....qpr 6-3 arbroath. qpr 3-3 glasgow rangers.....15 goals in 2 games....
since then have never missed one season following qpr, averaging 20 games a season, as have never left ladbroke grove or shepherds bush.
first game i watched on tv was man utd beat benfica 4-1 in the european cup final 1968, still couldnt prize me from my beloved qpr..
seen some highs and lows, too many to go through, all the obvious.....
early years mostly high, last ten years mostly low.
mentioned this before, and proud to say not one person in our whole family support anyone other than qpr....that includes aunts, uncles, nephews, nieces and cousins.
inlaws, thats a different story.
hopefully many more years to go.....including grandkids. feel sorry for my grandson, whose 19 now, been to many games over the last 12 years, and still loves them....
all qpr fans are one big special family, onwards and upwards.... | |

I'm 61 and have missed out on a few personal goals in life, but it's made me a bit more determined to keep going and not give up. So I'm fine with carrying on working, doing my best to stay fit and having one or two hobbies and visiting new places now and again in my spare time. Luckily (for now) I generally look forward to what may yet happen rather than look behind and ponder on what might have been and end up thinking "Shit, I'm running out of time and haven't done this or that'.
I also think it's really important, when you reach our age, to realize that so much of what is important in life happens between your own ears. Learning to appreciate the world you live in and be content with things. When you reach three score one I'd say that is really important and personally speaking, it stops you from ruing time gone by. | | | |

I have been mostly relaxed and sanguine about ageing but this week I've had a wobble.... I was unable to start my petrol mower, just couldn't yank the cord violently enough so had to grab the neighbour who's half me age and looks like, and is built like Thor. He nonchalantly pulled the ripcord and fired it up. I've been left with a sense of feebleness and advancing decrepitude all week.
I will cure it by buying a big top-of-the-range cordless Stihl mower. I'll hold fire on the ride-on version til I'm 70 though. [Post edited 1 May 12:51]

There is a group of us all Rs of course who all hit 60 within 4 weeks of each other from may to the end of june , we have all known each other through football since we was prob 18 /19 years old , grown up with each other gone through all the usual crap together since the days of the daphne specials the ghetto blaster , case of fosters (yeah its crap) cold sausage roll from the guards carriage and if you was lucky a mr kipling apple pie on the way back ,
My body still aches now thinking of what we got up to back in the day.
people falling out of the luggae racks on the way home from some god forsaken away game, the old bill locking the ipswich fans in after the cup game when john wark was 10 years off side , great away days every one was memorable for various reasons , up until recently never felt my age always thought i was this 18 years trapped in this decaying body but its caught up with me recently as does it to all of us . be nice to see us maybe get to a cup semi final one day maybe even get to the promised land of the prem who knows , its been fun thats for sure |  |

My eldest will be 50 next year. My first game would have been around 1960, with my dad. I can cope with the ageing and still try to behave as if I'm in my 40s. Until the recovery period is 2 or 3 times as long.
