The news that they are now operating pubs is tempting me to join the conversation, perhaps steering it in a new direction. I will, of course, keep you informed.

I know a worker on checkout does not have a great job, but it's still a job. Accordingly, I try to avoid the self-checkout option for this reason and also, because it's the effing Ryanairification of the retail sector!
Soon, when you go to a retailer, you'll be expected to unload the delivery truck, stack the shelves, and if you go on the wrong day, assist with the monthly stocktaking.
In relation to these self-checkout machines, I find my experience is littered with, 'scan you c..t' expletives. Retirement, coinciding with the exponential rise in AI/staff reduction etc., has seen a corresponding rise in expletive laden shopping experiences. |  |

The issue I have, is I use the self service handheld scanner as I am going round. Pack all the bags neat and tidy - Go to checkout and get the message we need to check you haven't missed anything. Along comes some spotty moody teenager and throws it all out the bags to check

There's also two other issues which, post-COVID, don't seem to be discussed as much as they need to be.
Firstly, with more and more jobs becoming redundant because of AI, how are people going to be 'funded' when less people will be working? The same could be said for governments, because I can't see the likes of Amazon picking up the income slack!
Secondly, AI isn't just going to see off blue collar jobs, white collar and the professions are equally at risk. It's hard to think accountancy for example, will need people to do the job before too long. So what is going to happen to people staring down the barrel of little or no work opportunities in the future?
I certainly recall reading a lot about the need to consider creating a universal income and the practicalities of doing so, pre-COVID, but the conversation seems to have dried up.

I think the sometimes expressed idea that ai is going to make work redundant and lead us into a leisurely nirvana is for the fairies - at least the latter part.
The job losses that are coming are terrifying. I think people need a purpose, we're not set up to sit around all day. We're, at base, animals of a certain kind with impulses, needs and wants at a subconscious level that we don't understand ourselves.
It does make me think that we should value work more - even the most basic tasks should be done to the best of our ability, and we should applaud work done well, instead of the sneering condescension that so-called low level - but often vital - jobs are sometimes met with. I should know.

The scanning of a receipt 30 seconds after I've just scanned and paid everything annoys me too. First time I saw this was at Ikea. I'd scanned my items and had asked for my receipt to be emailed to me. Then I realised I needed the receipt to get past the barrier but because I didn't have a mobile signal, the email hadn't come through. Fortunately, the member of staff who was there to help customers at the tills let me out. He says it happens all the time.
If companies have to have cameras, scales and exit gates because they don't trust customers, just put the manned tills back in place. |  |
