Did anyone see if Varane came back to the bench after going off?

I saw he went straight down the tunnel. Feel for the bloke a bit, clearly isnt preferred by JS. A limited player but one who definitely has a role for us to play. Hope he gets a full game soon.

According to the line up in fotmob, Varane replaced Vale before the start and Vale went straight back to the bench, no new player came onto the bench

Kamara replaced Vale positionally and Varanne moved into Kamara's position. Not ideal, but can see why JS made the change.

I cannot understand for the life of me when you’re playing a team low on confidence with no manager and you replace an attacking number 10 for a holding midfielder with the options we had on the bench. Really poor starting 11 in my opinion

The choice was between Varane and Alemayehu. I don't think any of the others would have been right. Alemayehu would have been the more positive substitution but with Scarlett on the pitch it would have meant having two inexperienced lads playing.

We had Lloyd, Smyth and Saito. Varane was not the right option.

If I have it right we lined up 4141, with Madsen behind Scarlett, Kamara, Varane, and Poku.

Which looked odd to me, relying on creativity from Kamara and Varane to link up with Burrell. Kamara had a stinker, but either way I don't really see him as a 10. Maybe I'm wrong.

But I wonder if the initial plan was 4231 with Maden and Kamara in the two and Vale in a 10 behind Burrell, which looked much more balanced. Perhaps the late injury threw JS. He did allude to needing to take responsibility for his decisions in the first half.

I know others said in the match thread that Saito should play in the middle of a three, but I don't really see it to be fair.

JS got the starting line up completely wrong. He’s right to acknowledge his mistake.

Scooters, Tunes, Trainers and QPR.

I think its refreshing for a manager to come out and own their mistake rather than gloss over it - He cant criticise the players unless he is ready to point out he set the team up wrong.

Fair play to him and another tick for this manager regardless of yesterdays result

That’s not correct.

Varane directly replaced Vale, and operated in the number 10 position for the first half. Kamara and Madsen were the two 6’s sitting. It was extremely odd.

At half time, Julian on record says switched to a diamond, and Kamara moved to the tip of that diamond in the 10 position, with Madsen as a singular 6 behind him.

Agree that it was the wrong starting 11. There was no need to start with 3 CMs against Preston ( Middlesbrough probably, but not yesterday).

When Vale got injured 8n the warm up, any of Saito, Smith or Lloyd should have replaced him, not Varane.

JS even got the half time substitution wrong imo. Smyth not Saito should have come on. Saito played OK but Smyth would have done more as he proved when he camevon in the 65th minute.

I thought Saito was game changing. Often he flatters to deceive, but yesterday he kept going at them, turned their defenders inside out, his best game in ages. Good substitution.

I think Saito is being judged on last season too much. He has certainly improved this season and almost back to the old Saito we had on loan.

I'm not sure thats right.
The first half was so poor it was hard to tell, but I think the players were rotating who was playing "10" If Kamara pushed forward Varane and Madsen dropped, but I saw a few times Varane at the top of the midfield and also Madsen.

Varane maybe unlucky to be subbed to fix the formation, as Kamara was having a stinker in that first half, with Madsen not far behind him.

I'd love to know what they said at half time, as by 60' I didn't even notice we were a man short and PNE looked terrified of the ball, just aimlessly pumping it long, when they weren't time wasting

Remember Smyth was coming back from an injury, maybe they didn't want him to play 45 minutes.

Whatever people on here think of him, Preston were clearly terrified of Saito. He pinned them right back in the corners, draining them of possession in midfield. Scarlett wasn’t being given the ball by his own team, so they could disregard him.

I imagine Saito and Smyth couldn't do 90 minutes so they were saved for the second half. Neither would have been ideal in the number 10 role anyway. Lloyd would have made some sense though

Preston play(ed) with a three in midfield, so Vale was man for that as he can easily switch from an 8 when we're without the ball to a 10 when we have the ball.

Neither Kamara nor Varane can really do that, nor have they played together so we looked really disjointed. Varane looks very far off it to me, for whatever reason. Just not at the intensity of the team we've seen this season.

Cirkin and also to a lesser degree Mbengue were tucking into the middle until Cirkin was sent off - not Adamson's fault, nor really Scarlett as they no experience of it but they were both playing as trad left wing/left back combo in that last 30 mins of 1st half and just left masses of space in the channel. The diamond in 2nd half sorted all that out, along with Saito having much better control and know-how.

Agree that Saito should've/would've started in place of Vale had he been fit to do 90 (but maybe should have done first hour-70?)
