Sorry to hear this mate - shitty thing to happen. Hopefully the alternative comes through and you get something safe, but the job market has picked up a lot in the last few months - fingers crossed that extends to your work too.
Get on the lookout straight away is my advice, 'normal store' role or not - get yourself out there as much as possible! Good luck.

Good luck with that loftboy I hope they find you one.
Thats a shitter after you were working while most were on furlough.
We were saying the other day we don't want the 200 back at ours as it's nice and quiet without them and the loos/microwaves are free and clean. (we are practical C****)

Sorry to read that loftboy. Bets wishes & I hope everything works out for you.
I can't imagine how much of a worry the job market is at present. My 65th birthday was one of the most important days of my life. Retirement has become me!

In the middle of moving to Lowestoft has opened up some new opportunities, made a few contacts yesterday, my existing company had a store nearby but doesn’t do deliveries, push comes to shove I’ll go shelf filling if I have to just until something comes up, trouble is they don’t have any vacancies at the moment.

Good luck, Loftboy - very sorry to hear that. I know it's probably a crowded market at the moment, but with the explosion of home deliveries, I would have thought there would be a few similar jobs knocking about with competitors; especially with your experience and having working through Covid. Keep your chin-up and I'm sure something will turn-up, either with JS or elsewhere.

Sorry to hear that LB, worrying times.
My department has been been undergoing a "restructure" since last October and i find out Thursday if i've been successful in securing a new role or made redundant.
I have spent this week dishing out good pay rises and bonuses and each time I reminded my staff of the very lucky and privileged position we've been in through lockdown. I mentioned to each of them an article I read this week. It said that 6.3m people in lockdown are better off in that they have maintained (or increased) their income whilst working from home and have had very little expenditure. That is just 10% of the population and scares the hell out of me. It means that 90% have been furloughed, have lost their job (or their business), or are being forced to go to work to live in the same way they did pre-covid.
I wish you, and everyone else in a similar place all the best - keep safe.
That's demoralising news for you mate but I am sure you will bounce back. If it is of any consolation a year ago I was directing features for BBC1. Now I am cleaning outdoor retail parks starting at 3.30am and then going on to fill in as a part time carer for a care company. It's all I could get but I am grateful for it. Keep your chin up. Things will change. I tell myself that. I found my jobs through Indeed and it's actually proven to be a bit of a lifesaver and has kept a roof over my head, just about.
Sorry to hear about this, we're going through restructures at work at the moment as well, thankfully not personally affected at the moment but 8 people i work with have all lost their jobs, some been at the company over 40 years is horrific.

The company I worked for carried out a restructure just before Christmas - several of my friends have been told they are being redundant. I was lucky in that I had changed roles a year ago - the friends who are being made redundant are all carrying out the same role that I used to do.
They were given a date of end April and started making other plans. They have now been told, we are too busy and they have to stay until August to get their redundancy payments. Some of them had other jobs lined up from April which they now can't take unless they resign and give up their redundancy. It's embarrassing the way they are being treated.

Hope you find a new position ASAP Loftboy
last time i looked at the data a couple of years ago there was roughly 26m people employed in the UK + self employed so 6.3m better off works out a lot more than 10%. its certain though that a much larger % of the working population are worse off because of Covid and many substantially so.
Although there are signs of some improvement in terms of employment opportunities i have a horrible feeling that its a false dawn and there are many more redundancies to come in lots of sectors, the impact of this last year is going to take a long time to be fully appreciated

I think you are spot on.
So many knock ons from this. For example, I am much less likely to spend time in shopping centres and town centres now - what is the point?
Wife says there is something in going out and popping back with something tangible or something you didn't think you need, but not for me.
Of course, many businesses won't exist after this and some will have accrued debt, which will demand that they get it back fast. Increasing cost will just get people, who may not have much cash left, to go somewhere else meaning that instead of reducing the c-19 debt, it will increase. There's been payment breaks in taxes and rents, which will soon stop and at the end of furlough, there may well need to be more redundancy.
There might also be a big reduction in huge contracts, which filter well down the Supply Chain and with reduced/ no income those small suppliers at the bottom of the supply chain won't last long.
All the best loft boy and everybody else going through this Very worrying times , I’ve lost a contract with a big company as they are now outsourcing to India cutting short our agreement Like you I worked through lockdown and was even getting vibes off them that they were going to give me the contract again , I even had two lads lined up for the extra work I’ve been talking to other companies and they want me to what I do at 7/8k less than what I do for the same work !!! I’m finding the market is saturated I’ve now gone back to studying in my spare time for cemap and try and had another feather to my cap so I’ve got something to fall back on Luckily I have a few Bob saved and the mortgage is small but it’s the young uns I feel sorry for, how the hell are they going to get work in this environment ?
And Bowles is onside, Swinburne has come rushing out of his goal , what can Bowles do here , onto the left foot no, on to the right foot
That’s there that’s two, and that’s Bowles

Sorry to hear of your potential job loss loftboy but am not surprised as I think this will be a recurring theme at many work places. Think furlough is a false economy by the Government unless they plan to permanently take over these firms and employees(Which might well be the case with most Public Transport). To me seems like a sticking plaster trying to hold on a severed limb most small to medium businesses have had no income for the best part of year I would be amazed if they are resilient enough to cope with this. Retail has changed forever as people have now become used to buying large parts of their shopping online and have found it to be easier and cheaper. Cannot see people who are working from home rushing back to sitting in car fumes for 2 hours a day

Sorry to hear that Bosh, but glad that you've found work. For a lot of people, I think the past year and probably the next year, are gonna be about keeping your head above water and reminding yourself that things will get better. In the meantime, it sounds like you've got a great outlook.
Good luck everyone. Sounds wa nk, but keep believing in yourself and in your future.

Yes, good luck to everyone affected by this huge shift in the job market. So far I've avoided any negatives but Brexit and Covid both adding layers of cost to our business so is slowing down our recovery from fishing related problems over the last few years. Food industry is generally a safe place to be in a recession so fingers crossed it stays like that, hope those that are able can perhaps change their sector, if that helps, as it's a hard one to see if some can recover quickly. Unprecedented times for sure

Just had a phone call from one of our sister companies, been offered a job driving at their store in Lowestoft, slightly less money but it’s better then not earning anything, happy days!
