Most expensively assembled team 23:50 - Mar 12 with 1985 viewsMyke

442
McCarthy £3.5 M

Onouha £4.25 M Samba £12.5 M Bidwell £1.5 M
Caulker£8.5 M

Wright-Phillips £5.2 M Fer £9M Hoilett £3.4 M
Granero £3.5

Zamora £5.2M
Remy £9.5 M

There were other more expensive mid-fielders than Granero, like Sandro or Mbia for example, but he was our most expensive attacking mid-fielder that I could find. Lots of space wasters in that lot. Think I would only have time for Onouha, Bidwell, Zamora and Remy out of the whole lot. Imagine a team with Wright-Phillips on one wing and Hoilett on the other - what could possibly go wrong??

Frigtening. May I suggest an adjustment?

Julio Cesar. £80kpw for two years = £8.32m. Maybe he was on £100k?

Expensive could be total cost of ownership, with sale proceeds. Didn't we get back what we paid for McCarthy.

Never understood the hate for Hoilett.

Bare bones.

Isn't it because his form seemed to improve as his contract neared its end? I think people expected more from him, particularly as how he'd been so good at Blackburn, but in reality, he was probably performing above his mean there. I agree that there are far more egregious examples during that period than someone who wasn't as good as we expected.

Looking at that team, McCarthy, Bidwell and Granero have all had decent careers since leaving us. Our problem was the lack of a cohesive, joined-up plan and a scattergun approach to assembling a team. Some of the individuals were good players who would have flourished in an organised structure. Was Fer really £9m? Wow.

Caulker has done on since going to Turkey.

That team makes you want to cry though. On paper, we've had some quality players over the past 15 years, in reality they've never lived up to it.

Underacheiver.
Certainly wasnt one of our worse players during this period, he was in fact pretty consistent (consistently average to ok). Its just that he shouldve been the flag bearer for us. Top player going through the motions most of the time, shame.

I was horrified at the time and I'm still horrified at Cesar. We were already paying Green a fortune.

In the great scheme of things, £65m doesn’t sound so much and as bad as most of those turned out we got about half the money back, the two biggest might even have made a profit.

Salaries the killer.

Phoned in most of his performances, never seemed that interested, and as stated before only started putting a shift in as his contract ran down and he needed a nice big contract from someone else. Very disappointing signing overall.

From my memory of hoilett he had all the gear but no idea. Looked the part , done the hard work , but no end product . Even had to rely on our Richard to set up bobby at Wembley

Going back to the original figures; weren’t Messrs Mutch and Phillips in the £4m plus category?

I agree with the poster who said on paper we’ve signed some quality over the last 15 years, they just turned out to be rubbish when on the pitch!!

You are right, but I just went on transfer fees so technically he was 'free'. A completely gratuitous (and crap) signing - Hughes at his very worst. The question I would throw out there - how many of us were tut tutting at the waste of money at the time, or how many of us were enjoying rubbing shoulders with the 'big boys' - on paper at least, if not on grass?

I know it’s hard to remember now but we also had Rio Ferdinand for a while too.I’m struggling to remember any games he played for us though, apart from at old Trafford and white hart lane.
Did he ever play in a winning game for us?

To be fair to Rio his wife was dying of cancer at the time. I even heard a interview where he recognised he didn’t give his all for us.

He was also laughing and joking with a mate about how rubbish he was for us in another podcast

He was too busy trying to sell his brand more than anything else

I dunno mate, I don’t think one cancels out the other.

He wasn’t a great signing clearly but not sure we utter his name in the same breath as Bosingwa.

Seriously, did you ever watch him play?? He was all build up no result. He would do a great run and tamely shoot wide or hit a cross that nobody could get close to. He had talent, just no final product. he was madly frustrating. Every time he got the ball he would do something great and then ultimately waste the opportunity (that he, himself had created, granted).

For me, he got total and absolute forgiveness for that one run and cross in the playoff final. But even there, if you watch, he battles and he grinds and he brilliantly gets past his man and then slings it into the box, to nobody in particular. This time, though, the defender passes it straight to Zamora and BANG the rest is history!!

Was signed purely to sell shirts in Korea, lost my shit one day when a Korean turned up in a Manchester United shirt with his name on the back, we were getting our usual thumping from someone , Park was on the bench, when at half time they announced he was coming on he and his Mrs started cheering, I said to them “ what you cheering for , he’s fûcking shit” they told me I had insulted their greatest sporting hero, I told them that if he’s pulling on the Hoops he has to be able to perform in them and he is quite obviously past it. Think I may have upset them.

We never paid a penny in transfer fees to Anzi for Samba in 2013. We actually still owed the money to them & gave them 500k when we sent him back some 6 months later. The deal was nothing more than an elaborate loan.

We did pay him 100k a week though.

I remember Rio being out-jumped by Crouchy at a corner for a Stoke goal at the Loft End. Crouch just basically put his hands on Rio's shoulders and nodded the ball across for a tap-in. Rio didn't put up a fight, or protest afterwards. Alright, we found out later that his wife was ill, but in that case should he really have taken the wages, when he wasn't in a fit mental state to give of his best?
