Lovely listen. I wish he had gotten off the fence for the Vinnie Jones question! Many thanks for sorting Clive

Bit unfair of me that one. I'm still annoyed with myself for not asking Paul Murray about it because he definitely would have done.

Who else would spill the beans? Gallen, Maddix?

Yeh I'd love Danny Maddix, he's on the list.
Trying for Tony Currie as well.
Want to try and get some really ambitious ones for next season, Chris Wright, Richard Thompson, Gerry, Terry Venables. There's that many chuffing podcasts out there now it's difficult to nail down guests who haven't already been everywhere.

If you are being really ambitious do a dead player. Has anyone done a séance podcast yet?

Particularly one that didn't go in for reincarnation.

Do that, Clive, then we'll talk about being impressed.

Listening to the Simon barker one where work allows and I'm loving it. A Gent, but one who can get the story across as well.

As much as I would love to hear an with Terry Venables, isn't he ill with Alzheimers?

I could be wrong (and hope I am!), but I'm sure I read/heard it recently.

He looked like Les Dennis who was famous for doing an impression of Mavis from Coronation Street

Hope not, but cannot find anything that suggests he is directly.

I think he lives in Brook Green (or did)

SPOILERS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Don't read until after you listen to the interview.

Thoughts:

1) Great words about Keith Peacock. These extra vignettes make these interviews.

2) Great to hear again about how influential Don Howe was to our history.

3) He modestly downplays the 90 QF equaliser against Liverpool, a goal that involved a double-tap shimmy and squeezing between two others, and he even volunteered that he didn't aim. Most players would have (quite rightly) claimed that they went for the top corner.

4) He downplays the cruel luck of missing out on the 90 World Cup, and the injury that led to him missing out, stressing that Paul Lake is "a lovely lad"

5) I'd forgotten how pivotal the Rangers-Everton game was in Francis' early knockings. Barker was also captain that day. Well picked up Clive. Also, dead right that the relief and noise when our third and Barker's second went in was huge.

6) That he chatted to Gerry Francis and said he didn't want to continue playing wide right, Gerry sorted it and dropped him, that he laughed at his own daftness, and then praised Impey who replaced him.

7) Hateley - good pro, good person, just couldn't get fit. News, if true.

8) Vinnie Jones - point made

9) Neil Ruddock's award - point very, very well made. Still praised him, but mentioned gently the contrast between both of their careers.

10) I love how he's so honest about his declining abilities. And his departure, but quickly tying it back to his good and bad times at Rangers.

11) "Shit...I'm sorry..."

12) The testimonial... couple of lovely lines.

13) Superb by you, Clive, Honestly, I can tell that you had all those questions lined up. And those stats lined up. But you didn't rely or insist on them, and you didn't interrupt him.

Just to get him to talk, and to then let him talk. That's the key.

Loved that and he was important part of team I’m fondest of as coincided with my living over there.
Shame we’ve got these long servers getting rough end of it at end of time with us given how it’s so damn rare now to have anyone stick around a few seasons.
Great listen thanks.

Thanks Clive once again. Great interview.

Simon Barker was a very decent player for us and probably never got the recognition for this. We were spoilt back then with so many great players.

I'm half way though and really enjoying it.

The thing I remember most about Barker playing is him running everywhere at full tilt for 90mins.

I had to get some advice from the PFA a few years ago and spoke to him and he was such a genuinely lovely bloke. Really enjoyed that interview.

Talking of his time at Port Vale, I’ll always remember him running over to us, clapping, then showing a clenched fist as if to say, “come on you R’s, don’t give up” at the end of the relegation 6 pointer at their place. Always was a smashing fellah and thanks for a really good read.

I need a SAGA. What’s the SAGA? It’s ….. Queen’s Park Rangers.

Wish I'd remembered that, would have brought it up. Think I was busy trying not to get killed in the car park outside by that point.

Finally just listened to that. I'd honestly never heard Simon Barker's voice in an interview before I don't think, but what a bloke.

That 91/92 season was my first one actually being there and I'd always be annoyed when I turned up and he wasn't starting. Quality, quality player.

The connection he shows to the club makes it even more special - genuinely upset about being part of the team that went down, and genuinely upset about not being recognised after 10 years - which he had an absolute right to be. Great stuff.
