It's 'Notes from a Small Island' - down the pub, as if Bill Bryson were a Ranger! People, places, family and everything in between.
Agreed about the Blackpool fans. It's not like they went to a lively away ground and decided they were going to be like that too. It's just how the are.
Brilliant stuff, I could certainly relate to Carol and Deb insomuch as I appear to have come across quite a lot of these types recently. NOBODY CARES YOU FRUITCAKE.

Just the necessary touch of pathos to leaven the humour.
The 1 industry towns where the industry left is like a roll call of Championship clubs:
Sounds like Blackpool fun, despite the hurricane, wheras Cardiff wasn't. Despite the attractions of the Welsh city.
"Travel is fatal to prejudice, bigotry and narrow-mindedness, and many of our people need it sorely on these accounts. Broad, wholesome, charitable views of men and things cannot be acquired by vegetating in one little corner of the Earth all one's lifetime." (Mark Twain)

Thanks so much Clive - what superb storytelling. I've never had the pleasure (pun...) of frequenting the delights of Blackpool, but I feel I have now. Tremendous stuff.
Back to business - I would have replaced the word 'significant' with 'ridiculous' in the 2nd full para. And that does include us in 2013-14....

Nah we had a great time in both tbf.
Cardiff away was a horrible place to go in the old days, but it's one of my favourite aways now. Loads of good pubs, no bother most weeks, and friendly locals (not something anyone would have said in the Ninian days) I've done a couple of weekenders for the football and had a cracking time. It's not London, Paris or NYC, but it's a sound place to spend a couple of days if you enjoy pubs.
Fulham FC: It's the taking part that counts
