Thought twice about starting this thread as Clive has enough on his plate so I'll try and not go overboard, very rarely listen to Talksport but it was on when I jumped in the car and heard someone saying...

'We could have shipped 5 against Preston'

Didn't immediately clock who it was and then realise it's Austin, in + out of the car, 15 minutes later they are all talking about Lukaku and Austin comments...

'Like me, he thought they would build the attack around him'

This shoptalk just cannot be good for team morale as I'm sure the likes of Field, Dunne, Dykes not to mention Warburton can be too delighted with Austin's opinion being broadcast nationwide.

I'll leave it there as could have mis-heard but 100% sure I heard him right!

Austin has said keep the faith but is working in his future career when his bread and butter currently is what is most important.

To be commenting publicly about us in derogatory terms seems from my perspective to be a conflict of interests to his day job...

He preparing for the future but am not sure it will sit well with many particularly as his form and fitness appears poor.

Was one that said he would only sign if qpr showed ambition but his own focus does not "appear" 100% on the job in hand.

Being a club legend he gets away with this.

Bit similar to Ray Wilkins glittering playing career with us damaged by his foray into management with us.

Sad to see.

Sad how it's turning out with Austin

Would love to know if this was really a Warburton signing or if the board bought him to be popular with the fans

Heard the first bit of the show and he praised the young keeper saying how well he done and it could have been 5 0.Then just had Goldstein taking the piss asking him if he they will have a statue of him at Qpr and he said no but Goldstein replied that it would be of him sitting on the bench.Ho Ho Ho.Can’t blame the bloke looking for a career after football but don’t think this is a good look while still playing and with his team still in with a chance of play offs.

Think you can get this on talk sport play again app as I think it’s a 3 hour show

Yeh it is a shame. It does look like he wasn't Warburtons signing. He's not getting much game time. Has Gray played more minutes since coming in in Jan?

He's co hosted that show on and off for over a year now, I think if it was an issue for the club they probably wouldn't have signed him.

Anyway for what it's worth this is what he actually said about QPR

On Sheffield Utd the EFL reporter they had on said he was about to come on at Sheff Utd before Wallace got injured, Austin said "We had to bring another left back on instead"

On the Preston game

We started OK, had changed to a back 4 and they scored from a mistake by us. Our number 1 Westwood was sick in the warm up so Murphy Mahoney had to go in goal who is only 19 and make his debut which was fantastic for him. To be fair he was brilliant for us because it could have quite easily been 5 without him.

When asked if they are still we are still in it he said we need 5 wins and it won't be easy

They then moved on to review other EFL games. Maybe put the pitchforks away for the evening

The Lukaku quote above was talking about how he thought Lukaku would have the team built around at Chelsea as Lukaku would have but that didn't happen. was nothing to do with QPR or his own situation that bit.

Don't think so,

1st quote was..their 1st goal came from our mistake...now I thought it came from good movement from their forward...surprised Austin didn't recognise this and instead called out Dunne

2nd Quote was...they could easily have scored 5... and did'nt hear but for young Mahoney Murphy..either way, sure Dunne, Field and Co won't be too enamoured with that comment as arguably we could have scored 5 too

3rd quote...I'm 100% sure I heard Austin say...like me, Lusaka thought they'd build the team around him

By all means give it a listen Punter and tell me he didn't say..like me..

The Lukaku bit he did say Like me, he was saying he thought Lukaku would have team built around him and that Lukaku probably thought the same as well, It was nothing to do with QPR. I think you may have read a bit too much into that.

On the rest of it I think it's safe to say if you don't like Austin you'll find fault and get angry about whatever he says or does. It sounded too me like a pretty bland summary of the game and I can't see how it would upset the other players. To say he called out Dunne is complete twaddle. I imagine the players are far more blunt in the changing room about this kind of thing than what he said here. Warburton himself said pretty much the same thing after the game.

Yes, may have mis-interpreted when he said 'like myself' but just cannot see Warburton being happy with one of his players giving their opinion on a talkshow about a mistake being made by his teammate and the team could have conceded 5, maybe I'm wrong but barely a start in 20 games outside the international break + FA Cup squad rotation could suggest Warburton reads it a similar way.

If he said something controversial about QPR or a teammate I'd see where you are coming from but was a very bland 30 second summary of a game we lost. Nothing he said was incorrect either.

He didn't say a team mate made a mistake he said a pretty general quote of it was a mistake by us. He was basically trying to move onto to a different subject as quickly as possible.

I doubt Warburton will care too much, he's been quite vocal in the past about wanting players to have a strong opinion in the dressing room so would be odd to get upset about this.

Austin hasn't been dropped due to a radio show, he just wasn't playing well and Warburton thinks Dykes/Gray offer more, is the same with why Ball isn't playing. There could of course be deeper hidden conspiracy theories but I'm not sure it's anymore complicated than that.

Different opinions but I didn't think their goal came from our mistake but from good movement and I didn't think they could or should have scored 5 (think there XG was 3 and can recall 1 very good save from Mahoney Murphy)

I get Warburton wanting the players to be vocal in dressing room but surely not on national radio?

Maybe I'm old school but surely its the Managers job to comment on the team's performance and it's Austin job to be as fit + sharp as he can be come match-day.

No, just want his focus 100% on the R's, able to play football at championship pace for 90 minutes at least once a week and to leave commenting on our teams performances on national media to Mark Warburton.

Charlie Austin is not fit enough.

Not buying the "he is 31 years old"

Not an age for a striker to be out if shape. And sure we all agree for a championship striker, he is definitely a few pounds above what he should be.

He is our player but even if it not too controversial in what he says on talksport, its not ideal and IMO could be seen as potentially damaging.

He is a legend and quite rightly so but if he wasn't, he would potentially be the boo boys target !!!!

Great shame all round really

I don't think it's that he's not fit, I think it's that his body is broken. It doesn't work any more. The injuries took their toll.

Could be right but if the case, it held up just long enough to bag a very lucrative 2 year contract, from a club that financially on its arse.

I picked up a running injury recently. Plantar fasciitis. It’s not too uncommon. I’m told it’ll eventually go with the right physio work but it does hang around. It’s an inflamed heel tendon so my right heel is very sore and when walking I end up tip-toeing on my right foot like a camp velociraptor. I then remembered this is how Charlie Austin traipses around off the ball. In Austin’s case it’s like someone with a verucca walking around the changing rooms of a municipal swimming pool. Charlie Austin has or has had plantar fasciitis. It’s my theory and I’m sticking to it.

Talksport Tonight on 11:57 - Apr 13 with 3507 viewsStevenageRanger

Plantar is very difficult to get shift without full rest. Can linger for 18 onths without rest in extreme cases. If it is that (and I know its just a theroy) then would make sense. Would be unable to train properly.

The sports science is off the scale now - they will be monitoring vo2 max body fat endurance etc in all the players and loads of other stuff. it is more a case of managing what the players body is capable of and avoiding injury - if you add muscle you may increase strain on suspect hamstrings etc. With GDPR the club cannot discuss a players medical situation without consent and for good reason.

I do not think there are many players who are just unfit as they like a beer and a curry although there probably are a few. I suspect the fittest player in our squad may not be a regular starter (although I do not know) and I bet the are 'fitter' players in league two who lack the technical ability to compete at this level.

I don't think we have played anyway to Austins strengths as a finisher- our system is just not set up for him.

If you've got it, try and get referred to a foot specialist by your GP. I had it for several years and tried every remedy going but nothing seemed to work and I was in pain a lot of the time. Finally saw a foot specialist who gave me a special insole to wear and it cleared up within a few months. I'm back playing football twice a week now.

But we haven't changed our system from last season when he was able to score goals, and I think you'd be hard-pushed to find a Rangers fan who wouldn't agree his fitness / mobility has deteriorated since last season and / or the signing of his new contract.

I get fitness issues as have seen Chair, Willock, Dykes and SJ struggle and try to play through injuries in games this season, likewise Adomah and Wallace took time to get properly match fit, just have seen only a very marginal improvement in Austin's fitness since his earliest games this year, and on seeing this, and then the bulk of Gray on his arrival, I just thought this will be our undoing this year, and arguably that's been the case as with Willock and Dykes injured, for the money we are paying those two, we should have been confident in playing them in a 3-5-2, which unfortunately was a non-starter.

We have changed slightly. Last season was usually 2 up front with Willock/Chair behind and one less central midfield player., usually a midfield 2 of Johansen & Ball/Field and one of the back 3 coming out and joining in with midfield. We started this season the same way before Fulham ripped our midfield apart and since then it's mostly been 1 up front with an extra one in midfield which i don't think has suited any of our strikers, Dykes record since the change is awful. The 3 centre halves have also stopped breaking forward as much as well possibly due to less space in the middle of the park now
