Its so easy - about the 30th minute you say to the keeper "You're taking too long with the goal kicks, i know what you're doing, carry on and its an early yellow" Waving your arms , having a chat and then doing nothing about it is a nonsense. I get, but don't agree with, the PGMOL/clubs edict about NEVER penalising the 6 seconds - that's not Ward's fault - but the time spent taking GKs, throws and other restarts started after they scored their 2nd. Not their fault, we would and have done the same, BUT , he's the referee, he has to the tools to deal with it and he just didn't. The odd call you're always going to disagree with, otherwise he was OK, but his game management was awful.

finally booking the keeper in injury time was complete joke. He blew his whistle just as the keeper kicked the ball ... Blow the whistle, wave your arms about a bit, write name on back of card, finally get the ball back to the keeper, keeper places the ball and composes himself... Are referees under instructions not to book players for time wasting early as this leaves time for a second yellow for whatever reason and hence a red. Maybe the powers that be don’t want players sent off for time wasting.

My issue with this is that, in the similar Blackpool game, we could've been playing for hours and we still wouldn't have scored. If we had another few minutes last night (which we probably should've had last night with their keeper's timewasting), Richards was almost definitely going to hit the back of the net eventually.

Keepers dont have to go off and be waved back on by the ref This aspect of football is starting me to fall out of love with the game. Its only the refs who have the power to help clean up the game, sadly I think this will not happen. You will see fans drift away. Have a chest infection so have missed both WBA and Hudd games, glad I didnt go. (Had we won then I wouldnt be writing this!!!)

Hi PP, I was curious about how you thought the referee should deal with an incident that happened in the 2nd half last night. A Huddersfield player was tackled, by Field I think, fell to the ground clutching his ankle and rolling around. The referee waved play on and about 20 seconds later Huddersfield broke forward near the injured player. He realised a break was on and jumped to his feet and sprinted after the play. Is that something a referee could take action against? It is blatant cheating but not a foul i suppose. Thanks.

You have a point, they don't, same as clubs don't want the 6 second rule enforced - its become obsolete. Yes of course every side 'delays the restart of play', of course you're not going to give out yellows every time someone 'stands' on a free kick, but last night.....come on show some knowledge of the game, you know they are bottom, you know whats happening and you just can't think to yourself after 30', right I'm going to let the keeper at al do that for over an hour.

He very clearly told Thomas that he'd warned him four times, held up four fingers, when he booked him. Why does it need to happen five times before action is taken?

but my serious point is, he was giving him the hurry up from the 30th minute. Just have the conversation as I said above, towards the end of the first half - 2nd half he does it, yellow card. As regular readers will know, i can usually see/understand the logic behind a referee's action, but, as you can tell, I'm STILL angry about the lack of action last night, even now!

Just had a look back through Clive's ref preview for Ward and the following stands out from the Blackpool report: "Madine’s header on 53 minutes seemed certain to level the scores until Dieng got across and made a big camera save. That was part of a prolonged and exhausting Blackpool press that lasted ten minutes or more, and when the goalkeeper then tried to give his team a breather with some flagrant time wasting he was carded immediately. Saints be praised, finally, a referee taking decisive action over clock running, at a point in the game when the punishment meant something and would alter behaviour. All season, all season long, I’ve bitched and moaned and whined about the complete inaction and complicity of officials in this blite on our game, and finally here was Gavin Ward doing something about it. Strange though, I remember a referee looking very much like Gavin Ward, and sharing the same name, subjecting us to a testicle-aching 45 minutes of exaggerated hand waving, watch pointing, arm swinging and complete and utter lack of any affirmative or effective action whatsoever while Barnsley’s Brad Collins did everything bar lay out a picnic blanket and serve drinks at that end of the ground when we were chasing down a deficit against them back in August, and now here was this Mr Hard @rse On Time Wasting doppleganger chucking cards around before the hour. You can be incompetent as a referee, you only have to sit through a few minutes of this season’s Championship to know that, but you cannot be unfair." So it seems when our goalkeeper tries to waste time, he gets booked in the 58 mins - when our opponents do it, they get booked in the 90th minute or not even booked at all

Why not though? Why is it okay for Dickie to get a yellow card for criticising a ref recently (he certainly didn't scream in his face), which doesn't affect anyone but the ref, and yet the blatant time wasting that happened from the 26th minute kills the game as a spectacle is fine? How does that benefit the authorities? If they clamped down on it they'd only be a couple of sendings off and players would stop being so blatant about it. I can understand it happening in the last ten minutes and I wouldn't blame teams for that, and maybe they could suck up the odd booking. But for 70 minutes, FFS. I actually think it ends up with the ref just looking like a dick and no-one respecting his authority at all, which is what happened with Gavin Ward.
