Thomas, Bonne and Shodiipo need to be moved on. Bring in cover for Johansen and bring back the wee American from the Orient. Ditch the 433 in favour of a 4231. Job done.

You can only shift Thomas, Bonne, Shodipo and others if you find a taker, in this market, willing to swallow their salary. I suspect there are 7-8 players they'd like to shift but are stuck with like this. The only business we'll do this January is replacing loans that might be recalled with other loans, and potentially paying Bonne up with a lump sum second time around which might let us borrow Jamal Lowe or his non-union Mexican equivalent.

| Sweet little lies - Preview on 23:54 - Dec 28 with 2234 views | stainrods_elbow | Really captures with eloquent excessiveness my own view of fan love as damned love, elicited by such manifest cynicism in plain sight everyone in pro football who makes all their money out of us will literally be laughing all the way to the bank. And yet we still have those who tell us how 'lucky' we are to have the people we do at QPR etc etc. For falling in love at the age of 8 against Derby County watching the ashes of our swashbuckling so nearly team among the other 22,556 at LR, I've been paying and paying ever since, albeit with the occasional upsurge of mottled joy. In the words of Samuel Beckett (again), when it comes to being a football fan, never mind a QPR fan, there's really 'nothing to be done'. All we can venture is magnify our pathology, irrationality, and irritability at our plight. To that end, I'm grateful to this forum for allowing me a platform to do just that, depsite all the brickbats. HNY all, including those who don't deserve to be. [Post edited 28 Dec 2022 23:57]

Those three players are all out of contract at the end of this season right? You’d like to think the club would have a plan and confidence to replace them with better at the same cost, no easy feat. You throw the likes of Niko, Masterson, Bettache, and Kakay, into the mix, players who are just not going to play regular Championship football, then you have an opportunity to build something that is more in keeping with the division, can maintain consistency when you get injuries, and we can get behind. We have all seen enough of the players mentioned above, to know they are never going to be good enough and the club’s financial position can’t be used as a reason our squad is not adequate enough to sustain any sort of form beyond the first 11 and subs. The Championship is a slog and teams that do well have a mixture of effective sports science, smart recruitment, and a slice of good fortune. We seem to have very low stocks of all those elements. Biggest problem? Strikers who can’t score and are one dimensional. Roberts was never going to turn into Thierry Henry, Bonne seems to be a bit all over the place, and Armstrong is another who may be more training ground hype and academy coach ego than real potential.

As for the contracts of the others you mention: Masterson and Bettache also have contracts expiring in 2023; Hamalainen and Kakay's run to 2024. As always there will be a slew of youngsters' contracts up in the summer and it'll be interesting to see who is retained.

Armstrong is 19. We have already see him scare the living sh!t out of many defenders in this division. He is very raw, and his finishing clearly needs work - but I'd be willing to wager he'll go on to be at the very least an effective No. 9 at this level. I think we've managed him well so far this season tbf.

Ok, I accept that it is highly unlikely we can shift any of them, although Charlton and Ipswich have shown a mild interest in Bonne, but we need to find a better balance and shape quickly. Reflecting on the Cardiff game and the shape and personnel available, we shouldn’t really have expected anything more than what we got. The Preston game was probably more of an aberration from the norm than the Cardiff performance. For me, the defence doesn’t need “shoring up”, it’s the midfield that is the problem. The failure to track runners and remain goal side of opponents at set pieces is abysmal. The likes of Willock, Adomah, Dozzell and Tim are simply not at it when it comes to defending. If we can’t shift any of the squad deemed not good enough, we should look to return loanee(s) that are simply not contributing. I’m in the return to sender camp with Roberts and perhaps the bullshitting toad at GR might take the useful but unnecessary Balogun back up north. I would like to see Field and a similar type (no more academy boys) shielding the defence, allowing the aforementioned academy boys to do what they do best further up the pitch. Alternatively go with 3 at the back and play with 2, very capable, wing backs. Will be interesting to see what Critchley does over the coming weeks as it appears he wasn’t happy with what he saw at Cardiff. Players now coming back from injury should give him more options.

I've seen that Gillingham have just bought a player for the first time in years for a transfer fee because they have new American owners. Maybe they could take some of our players, get them off our books and improve their squad.
