While it's tough stuff to rake over, yet again another fantastic and insightful piece from Dan. These have been a great addition this season, have enjoyed reading all of them, for better or worse on the pitch

Excellent.

Ashamed to say I don't think I've read one of these before.

Excellent subjective analysis backed up by clear examples.

Fantastic!

So from what I understand, in the main, we need to be tighter defensively and close up the spaces - especially the full backs / wing backs.

Possibly with Laird and Paal back this will improve (whether that's playing a three or a four). And the two weeks off hopefully they will have been drilling this ad infinitum.

I suppose we will see at Wigan on Saturday...

Very interesting article. I don't always pick up the finer points during the actual game.

Not sure I agree that Kakay's body position is that significant for Rotherham's opening goal. If he turned the other way wouldn't have made much difference in that particular scenario, but yes, I do take the broader point about defending tight and having the right player for the position.

Will definitely look out for the points raised in our next game.

Enjoyable and interesting, as ever.
Thanks Dan.

Very interesting analysis. Kakays positioning would be unacceptable down the park.

Thanks Dan. Very interesting and informative. Player profiles is an interesting aspect.
I always knew that right footed players at left back looked awkward at times. Now I have a little more understanding of the reason.

Slightly different in as much as he is left footed but Manning, when he played for us, and when he would receive a ball wide on the half way line whilst being tightly marked, would inevitably play the ball backwards because imho his body position was too closed.

This issue of left/right sided players shouldn't be such a big deal. They can be coached and practice looking over both shoulders. It's muscle memory thing. Rollerbladers/Ice skaters/skiers deal with this problem whilst executing far more technical tricks/manouvers. For footballers it's just turn and run.

Great analysis. So they are not doing what u9s are coached to do, shockingly bad.
A question that needs to be asked is are the players unable to do the basics, such as keeping the correct distances , because they are shite or can't be bothered?

or because its a real life game played by real life humans so they make mistakes.

If every defender in every team played exactly as they were supposed to, then every game would end 0-0.
