Last performance tonight. Yonks ago, Hammersmith council had free summer gigs in Ravenscourt Park which I always attended. One night they had Alexis Korner’s Free At Last. They had an organ player which I'd swear was Reg Dwight but Wiki does not agree. The Times today had his top 25 songs but didn't include my fav, All Quiet On The Western Front, which we Rs fans appropriated as All Quiet On The Western Avenue.

True story of Elton. First team training at Watford when he was chairman, having been forewarned of his arrival via helicopter. Helicopter starts circling overhead we all stand in a bit of a bedraggled line when the chopper lands roughly 80 yds away. There was a pause of around 2 minutes were nobody knew what was happening when all of a sudden it took off again and literally bunny hopped and came about 15 yds closer. Elton then came marching out from the chopper absolutely spitting feathers. He was going mad. Turned out he’d told the pilot where to land and he missed it by those 15yds. We were in stitches. He eventually saw the funny side and was calling him all sorts. Absolute Legend.

hopefully he'll sing it for you tonight, good luck elton...
I don't think he does it anymore, it wasn't considered to be of his best work but I liked it a lot. The best version is the album version which has a couple of extra verses missing from the truncated single version.

Oh dear - that was terrible. Some years ago, I got back early from the Dog & Muffler and there was a concert on TV with Elton and a choir and orchestra. The slower songs were beautiful. I tried to find a DVD of it with no luck. After tonight's debacle, I renewed my efforts and found it on youtube. I shall download it and save it.

Well I enjoyed it but I don’t know what I’m talking about. If Dua Lipa thinks she’s got somewhere better to be than there I’m not sure I would have played her bucket of beige remix over the original mind.
Physically, it was impossible to ignore his demise but that was easily the best act of the weekend. I first saw Elton John with Dee Murray, Nigel Olsson and Bernie Taupin when they were second on the bill to The Who at the Chalk Farm Roundhouse and they were superb. It was a shame that Dee wasn't on the stage for the last time with them last night, it was a fitting send off for Reg and it was great to see people of all ages joining in with the endless stream of hits.
The grass is always greener.

Cat Stevens was good as well.I enjoyed Eltons show even though i'm not a fan but he has always been a great performer. Its just his dreadful lyrics that irritate me a bit.

We stayed up to watch it and thought he was excellent. Age clearly caught up with him physically, but I thought his voice was great still. And the crowd clearly loved it.

I thought he sounded more like a pub singer, biddy bo. Biddy do (billy connolly sketch on pub singers). Like all Kareoke tracks the music's fine but the singing....oh no Elton.

Got to be better than Guns 'n Roses last night.
Although I don't think Axl's voice is anywhere near as good as it was, I think there was a general sound mix problem. There were some other bands whose singers you couldn't hear properly.
Mind you, Axl's no spring chicken now, he's 61 I thought that his band actually performed well.
I'm quite annoyed that I missed Tinariwen.

Slash was doing some uncharacteristic bum notes in there and was a bit upstaged by the other axeman. At least they weren't miming. I think people are being a bit uncharitable towards old Reg especially that nitwit Piers Morgan who accused him of reading the lyrics.I'd like to see you remember everything AND play the piano at the same time. It's very difficult to do a really good outdoor mix even if the feed is coming off the soundboard and the wind doesn't help - I know that from experience. The backing band was very good, nice to see dear old Ray Cooper back in harness.Great lighting.Great atmos. If you can't do it live you can't do it and I think Reg nailed it.A fitting end to a long and glittering career.
Thought he absolutely smashed it the voice is not quite what it once was but the music and the crowd made up the difference and unlike Sir Paul last year he got the idea of a Festival play the f******g hits not the third track from my latest album

Never been much of a fan but it wasca bit special. Hit after hit for 2 hours. And for 76 his voice stood up pretty well. The audience certainly enjoyed it, which was the important part.

I watched bits and pieces of it and none of it held a candle to The Cure's performance the other year. Elton, Guns and Roses etc.
Fat Boy Slim and Leftfield seemed to do well but they are really just pressing 'Play' if we're being honest.
Stefan Moore, Stefan Moore running down the wing. Stefan Moore, Stefan Moore running down the wing. He runs like a cheetah, his crosses couldn't be sweeter. Stefan Moore. Stefan Moore. Stefan Moore.

Live concerts at venues unsuitable for live concerts (sports stadiums, massive fields etc) are always going to sound ropey but you're not there for audio perfection.
Clearly showing his age and lack of agility but he's 76 so not unexpected. I saw him in 2002 when he collected his MITS award. I was lucky to be quite close to the stage and for a guy with stubby fingers he can sure as hell play the piano.
Great career, great songs. Time to hang up the tiara and enjoy a nice retirement with the family.

My rather harsh comments earlier in this thread were around the sound quality made worse, no doubt, by the pathetic little rear-facing speakers on my TV. I think the way the songs were belted out obviously were fine for the crowd to sing along to but some of these songs have subtleties that were lost in this setting.
