How come the ref today has allowed constant complaining by Sunderland players and manager?? This clearly swayed the red card decision!!

Yeah, ref really weak on that

We were told at the start of the season if you surround the ref you get booked. I counted 8 Sunnyland players around the ref and not 1 got booked for harassing the ref. Ref has been an absolute joke today.

It was a Red Card all day long though, horrible challenge. I'd like to think our players would react in a similar fashion if the reverse had happened on 1 of ours.

Haven’t seen replay yet so will accept your opinion! That said the ref was poor generally!!

Nick London, on commentary, said how would you react if that tackle had been on a QPR player.

That sums it up. He wasnt off his feet but he was out of control. Changed the nature of the game.

Mind , Hume could have gone in last minute when he stamped on Dozzell. No card at all.

It was Dumb from Colback . We were well in control up the that.

Thought O’Nein did a fine job refereeing the game myself. Penalising Armstrong for getting within three yards of him was a nice touch.

We'll have to agree to disagree on the latter!
I actually thought the ref got most things right today, and I don't think we did ourselves any further with the ramped up aggression at the start. But he should have been a lot firmer with them over their constant whining to him.

Nah, ignoring the red card the ref was their best asset. Was never in real control of the match or players, incompetent and weak. Spoilt the game. Probably the worst ref performance this season.

It was probably a red. But that wasn’t the issue. It was almost every decision after that though. Complete joke. Goal kicks as corners. No fouls for us. Fouls for them. Nothing for Smyth and Armstrong. Everything O’ Nien wanted. Sunderland refereeing by committee. Nothing for the stamp at the end which was a clear straight red (which our players did get angry about).

He was clearly biased from early on. Whether it was the crowd criticism or wanting to take the easy option of going with whatever the Sunderland committee told him, he just seemed to be stuck in the headspace of everything going one way. Even Field was losing the plot with him at the end.

I thought he was extremely poor as a ref outside of Colback’s red.

He signalled 8, played over 9 and blew up about a min after they scored. We and they had another attack each. It was so unlucky to concede then, because, in answer to your question, 8 mins was a joke. But Sunderland reffed the game so immediately after the red he was speaking to our players about hurrying up and him stopping his watch. Twice he came over to our players to tell them to get on with it only to be told the Lino’s earpiece had gone and their players were having a drinks break. He was a complete clown who was set on us being in the wrong in every scenario. Luke O’Nien just belting it out for a corner under pressure being awarded a free kick because Sinclair was in the vicinity was piss boiling.

Serious question then - Is there anything we - as a crowd- can do when we experience one sided refs? During the game/ after ??

During the game :-???
I always feel that the ‘you’re just another shit referee’ and ‘you’re not fit to referee’ chants work against us and are just going to make him more resolute!! These chants act as another player for the other team just as much as support can be a 12th man, negative chants work against us!!

A chant along the lines of ‘all we are asking is for the ref to be fair’ ‘all we want is a fair ref’ would be better but one cannot change what is ingrained so there is nothing during the game!!

After the game??
Is there any overseeing body we can complain to? It just seems that there is no review or culpability of poor refereeing !!

So it seems we can do nothing !!!!

No science behind this but over the last 50 odd years, by and large, I’ve ascertained that when we win games refs are ok, when we lose games they’re shit.

Over the last 18 months and counting refs have been noticeably more shit.

I’ll create a spreadsheet to ascertain if there’s been any correlation and get back to you.

I want us to be aggressive, but I thought, early on, there was some over-aggression, allowing Sunderland to build up pressure on a ref who was weak on this aspect of the management of the game.

Yes, first 20 minutes was like Inuits clubbing baby seals. And to be fair, we were doing a pretty good job of it.

Colback couldn’t have timed his mistimed tackle more inappropriately.

I’m all for the added aggression but we’ve got to be cuter with it.

Agree with you both. Smyth driving Huggins into the hoarding, in particular, was unneccesary and unwise.

I really dislike that kind of foul, so it regularly and seem's to be a cowardly free hit. We howled when Barbet got his head cut open by a similar challenge, would like to see it clamped down on

They were definitely trying to put concerted pressure on the ref from the moment their centre back went off, we had scored and their other centre back was struggling for pace against Armstrong. As well as a couple of unwise tackles from us, there was an awful lot of soft falling over, surrounding the ref, the crowd calling for a foul/booking every time we went anywhere near their players. The ref seemed very pally with their team, having a little chat and a smile, patting them on the shoulder etc. Mowbray was full on whingebucket at the linesman, the fourth official and the ref every time they were in the vicinity.

I had actually said to my sister well before the red card that they were building up to this. It was a deliberate ploy. Unfortunately Colback fell straight into the trap.

But some of the decisions were bonkers. One ridiculous offside for Armstrong when we were in line and he was definitely onside. One decision to penalise Smyth for the softest of fouls on their defender when the fourth official overheard by my son in the paddocks agreed it wasn't a foul to Ainsworth, then minutes later they were awarded a freekick for a similar coming together in a very similar position up the other end.

Something was said to the lino on the Ellerslie Road side in the second half, and he reacted to it, with a look of shock and or disgust. The linos usually ignore the shouts and abuse. Sometimes they give a head shake or a wry smile but whatever was said, really got to him.

Ref was poor yesterday, but Colback's challenge was a red, at the game could not tell but seeing highlights confirmed it was right decision. Problem in my mind was that the ref had let a couple of challenges go in previous few minutes that Sunderland were moaning about and I think that influenced decision for a red, but you can't excuse a dangerous tackle.

Looking at the web it seems the Sunderland fans view is that we are a team of cloggers as our game plan was to kick them off the park. I think they are trying to justify the constant whinging to the match officials by their team. Perhaps any sort of tackles should be banned to protect their delicate flowers.

I have always hated giving the away fans the whole of the School end as the noise generated by them seems to make the ref favour the away team especially a club deemed bigger than us. The ref seemed to play to the Sunderland fans and completely discarded the new set of rules about players crowding round him.

And as for the Mackem who described our fans as filth then it is is enough to make me support Newcastle when they next meet Sunderland.
