I think this is the root of all that is evil when it comes to the modern music industry. I think a significant proportion of the population think that if something is catchy then it is good. And I think the music industry have caught onto this, and now aim to make an ear worm, rather than making something that is genuinely musically good. Ed bloody Sheeran is the best example of this.
As an experiment, go and listen to Agadoo, or Cotton Eye Joe, just once, and then see how long it’s stuck in your head. |  | | |

I'm sure we could go back to 'Greensleeves' and pick tunes from every generation and be critical of them as we'rebeing of today's stuff. Indeed, if we could go back in time, we'd find that old generations consistently bemoan the ills of the music of the now.
Simple fact: music made by teens and twentysomethings isn't aimed at anyone other than teens and twentysomethings, and certainly not old farts. If the youth of the time enjoy the music of their time and generation, let them enjoy it and stop being the old bloke saying that Bing, Elvis, the Stones, the Beatles, Bowie, et al well, it's not proper music is it? |  |

I listen to 6 music quite a bit and keeps me vaguely in touch with what’s happening in contemporary music .
He’ll probably headline Glastonbury next year which will be a change from Coldplay who seem to play there every year. I’m not a fan . | | | |

It's catchy, she has a great voice it's a decent song but 19 weeks Jesus.
On a side note I remembered Shakespears Sister's 'Stay' the other day and watched the video again. I thought it was great.

I completely agree.
I wasn’t very clear in my first post. When I said the ‘modern music industry’ I was thinking of from the fifties or sixties until now. I do think it’s got worse, but I agree it has been happening for ages.
So my examples of Agadoo and Cotton Eye Joe were maybe a bit confusing to my point, because they are pretty old. I meant they are both songs that did very well in the charts (Agadoo got to number two, cotton eye Joe was number one), I think we can all agree that they are absolute garbage, yet they will be stuck in your ear for days after you have the misfortune of listening to them. | | | |

I find the music of today to be processed gunge, I bought a DAB radio for the Missus and when she's got It on I can barely stay In the room, If it's not Two DJ's talking absolute bolox to each other all the time thinking they're funny and entertaining (they're not) It's Kylie Minogue singing something about repetitive bilge Water and Pumps breaking down.
I've tried to listen to the bloody thing but It leaves me cold.

modern charts are very influenced by downloads rather than actual vinyl/cd sold. , but i think i read thanks to new charts etc one direction outsold the beatles!!

I'm on Sam Fender's mailing list - I've seen him play in Brighton twice.
Last week he (or likely his PR team) sent an email out asking fans to download all three versions of the single (his solo version, the duet with Olivia Dean and the INSTRUMENTAL) as all of them would count towards the chart position. |  |
