I watched the last episode of line of duty and thought that was good. Undercover has finally grabbed by attention. I quite like some of the investigative programmes Stacey Dooley does. However I can't wait for the next series of people just do nothing.

Watched BBC4 Vietnam last night

I still remember as a young kid in the 60's that every news program had the war reported but never really knew the complexity of it pre 1960

I use to think JFK was against the war and had he lived it may have ended sooner as public opinion turned he may have done, but he was complicit (he knew it would never be won) as anyone for the mess if became. really good

I caught a bit of This Farming Life on the beeb and me and the missus are hooked. It makes Bake Off seem stressful.

Lots of sheep, hairy cows and lovely views.

I've watched the first four eps, Pommy and it is very good. It does suffer from an extreme US focus though: it mentions Australia and New Zealand (among others) as allies fighting in Vietnam but fails to acknowledge their part in the fighting.

Ep 4 (Jan '66 - Jun '67) spends the best part of half an hour relating the Battle of Ia Drang (the subject also of Mel Gibson's film "We Were Soldiers") while completely missing the Battle of Long Tan, which was arguably a greater victory and at longer odds. I know a few aussie Vietnam vets and I will not be recommending them to watch that because it would only make them angry.

Still, it makes a pleasant change from Yank films about 'how we won WWll'.

I've just done series one of The Wire and 3 episodes into second series. I did try and watch it years back but had more interesting stuff to do -- it's alright I suppose

I'm also watching Rellik but it's getting increasingly difficult to follow. I am a touch thick as I just realised this week the name is killer backwards much like the approach of the show. My theory is the head doctors partner isn't a victim and is doing the murders

Watched the last Doctor Foster last night. What a shite ending that was - an episode too far

I haven't seen the documentary, but on Kennedy...Chomsky's Rethinking Camelot: JFK, the Vietnam War and US political culture (1993) discusses Kennedy's role in escalating the war. This is from John Saville's review of Chomsky's book:

'The position began to change after Kennedy had won the presidential election in the autumn of 1960. He had already made his attitude towards Vietnam clear in speeches in the Senate. In June 1956 he told his fellow Senators: ‘Vietnam represents the cornerstone of the Free World in South East Asia, the Keystone to the arch, the finger in the dike.’ Within less than a year of taking office he sent a US squadron of 12 planes especially equipped for counter-insurgency warfare; and before the end of the year (1961) they were flying coordinated missions with the ground forces of South Vietnam. It was these Kennedy inspired actions of 1961-2 which escalated the state terror into the state aggression of the later years.'

There is also a very interesting section at the bottom of Saville's article about the (completely unknown) role of Britain under the Labour Party in restoring French imperialism in Vietnam in 1945.

"The Detectives - Murder on the streets" is one of the very, very few "must see" programmes on the box, edited so well, to have cliffhangers and genuine surprises popping every 30 minutes after months of investigation.

Turns "Scotland Yard" introduced by Edgar Lustgarten into a Morecambe and Wise routine.

The programme also shows that once you slip out of mainstream life, you have no chance, no support, and are a prime candidate to be abused, manipulated and fall under the control of drug pushers. Or support Chelscum.

Very much enjoyed Mindhunter on Netflix which I binged over a couple of days. Its loosely based on the guy at the FBI who first profiled and actually coined the phrase serial killer.

Any fans of Suburra? Four episodes in, it's certainly entertaining, but not as grimly realistic as Gomorra.

There are things I like and dislike
It's not a subject matter for everyone. puts me off a bit.

It's does give a real feel of the 70's the streets and porn industry in New York and mirrored in soho at the time.

I'm enjoying Mindhunter, too. It's a bit of a slow start but I guess that is historically accurate in that they're forming a new investigative skill. For Aussie revheads, you may be amused by the lead character's name, Holden Ford!

On a tip, I just watched a sci-fi, The Expanse, also on Netflix. Looks reasonable.

I spent hours watching the wire. In the end I worked out that I needed sub titles as I was struggling with Baltimore street accent. Just finished watching liar which was really good.

Subtitles defo help with The Wire, not only for the accent but also the local dialiect which you do pick up more over time. I also used to re-watch episodes because there was always so much going on.
