So all that Bristol City nostalgia, and talk about how terrified we used to be of Scott Murray, got me thinking last week. Who are the players we feared playing/loathed seeing in those three years in the Second Division and then immediately forgot all about once we were promoted.
Remember we used to have real problems with Martin Bullock and ben Burgess, hated Leon Knight and Wayne Andrews.

I definitely didn't hate him. In fact, I was always pleased when he played against us, but who could forget the slimnfit Kevin Pressman?
Picture him in one goal & Neville Southall in the other!
I can't remember any individual, but I disliked all of the Peterborough team when they deservedly thrashed us on Danny Shitu's debut. Watching him that night who would have thought Danny could become a legend?
On the plus side of opponents, didn't Paul Murray score a winning goal against Bristol City that helped us to second place? |
i think Pressman went through a period where he conceded 3 against us, for more than one club, for 5 or 6 games running. It was brilliant. |  |

The ref for that 0-0 draw at the end of the season against Crewe was the worst. Was it two players sent off for failing to retreat for a free kick? Which roughly translated as Crewe players kicking it against ours at point blank range. I remember being very ‘annoyed’ |

Yes, on any other day a draw with 9 men is an unbelievable result but on that particular day we needed to win to stand any chance of automatic promotion. [Post edited 20 Aug 2019 4:12]

Actually he scored twice against us in a 2-1 defeat at the Withdean (I think Forbes was sent off) but in the cup game he was well marshalled by Carlisle; so well in fact that Leon's dad decided to wait for Clarke outside after the match. No discussion of that period should overlook the hilarious Bristol City promotion calculator which always seemed to predict them getting about 110 points prior to each promotion failure. Pipping them to auto by a point and watching them fail in the playoffs was highly amusing.
The inter team message board banter in those days on rivals was excellent. Board invasions were great fun.
Rather than a particular player, the relentless winning by Tranmere when we were trying to shake them off to get in the playoffs the year before we got promoted was hugely irritating. |  | | |

One that springs to mind is Paul Heffernan. Scored a hat-trick against us in a crazy 3-3 draw at Notts County.
Also Leroy Lita. Like Parkin, another product of the Chelsea academy that never made an appearance for the club.

I remember going to a League Cup game at Northampton (maybe 2001). Unreserved seating and Rangers flooded into the away end and a load of us (inc me and my Dad) had to be escorted round the pitch to the empty stand to the side. Can't remember the score.
Think we also went to a League game there, in the home end. Might've been 2-2? I grew up in Rushden (about 20 miles from Northampton) so we used to go to loads of those East Midlands games.
There was a 0-0 at Peterborough in that old terrace with awful shallow steps (for a 12 year old anyway). |
Yeah I remember that 2-2, was a Karl Connolly double. We were two up against ten men and managed a draw. Sam Parkin late equaliser! I'd say this game is peak early Nougties QPR.

Wrexham hadn't won a game in ages, change the manager and hey ho beat us 1-0 , that was a long drive home.
That era enabled us to visit some far flung places , Rushden and Diamonds ( where ?) but none so bad as good old Kenilworth Road.
Back on topic, admired Koumas and Kavanagh for afar, detested Earnshaw and Roberts after his posing in front of our end after scoring at Ashton Gate. | | | |

I think I went to more away games in that period than I've been to in all the other years I've supported Rangers put together.
Losing 3-1 at Colchester was a particular low point. Got a nice rust shower from the panels above the walkway into the bargain. Proper old school grounds. |  |

The one that sticks in my mind is a poster called IRJD or something like that (may have the letters the wrong way). Always an easy target for wind ups.
As someone else mentioned the Plymouth lot joined us in mocking them.
Early in the first Div 2 season I was in the UK and went to our home game v Bristol City. This was the hastily and cheaply cobbled together side with Leroy Griffiths, Terrell Forbes, Aziz Ben-Askar (who looked really good) etc. It was a 0-0 draw, but I don't think I've ever left LR feeling more proud given the fighting spirit we showed that night. A true Holloway team. I remember Tony Thorpe hit the bar for them and we later signed him. [Post edited 20 Aug 2019 23:13]
