Carabao Cup - match thread 12:30 09:57 - Sep 4 with 27296 viewsderbyhoop

12:30 kick off, I've been told.

Am I the only one struggling to get excited about this. Suspect not.

Warbs, in interview, wanted to focus on the start of the league programme, so I'm expecting a scratch team and a typical QPR roll over and have their tummy tickled.

No Dykes, Thomas just back in training, Ramkilde gone missing. Oteh to score a perfect hat-trick?

After 2and goal Lumley blasts Ball, 3rd goal not a word said to Manning.

Some positives in there, think at CB we have 2 very good players, BOS looked more interested, Smyth has a role to play for sure.

Lumley isnt good enough, doesnt inspire confidence at all.

Oh who cares?
Man City will win it anyway.
The only worry is, a teabag last longer in a cup than us.

Not a lot Lumley could do with the 1st and 3rd goals. Maybe the second. Its in front of him that's poor. not just the back four.

Smells like a trout farm in here

Let's hope that Dykes and Thomas hit the ground running, but I agree we badly need another option up front. It looks like Ramskilde could be another in our long line of sick notes so maybe two needed.

I'd also like to see Manning given a run in midfield where I think he would add some much needed steel. I sometimes think we made a mistake converting him to a wing back. He has a good pass on him, is comfortable on the ball and has a good eye for goal.

I see Matt Smith is still banging them in for Millwall. It’s not against the law to have a large immobile striker who actually scores goals!

Never knowingly right.

Morse very highly rated by wigwam, and can be had cheap. That would give some competition in the rear. Ooooer!

I assume we have someone who is supposed to be our defensive coach?
Truth of the matter is literally anyone could do a better job?

Having read the piece about Gerry Francis in the week and the coaching at Spurs, we could really do with someone of his calibre to coach the defence. He’d probably do two days a week for free as well.

First competitive match for a side that has never played together.

Entirely new and very inexperienced defensive unit who will have played together for a matter of days.

New midfield, again first competitive match together.

Lacking first choice striker and playing some relatively inexperienced players together.

Substitutions seem to have been to protect players whose fitness is still being brought up. Probably the right idea, but lost momentum by doing the double substitution as it took time to get shape back, which a very good Plymouth side took advantage of.

Not going to get too concerned at this point. Relatively low priority game, allowed a run out for what will be some key players and definitely squad players. I'd have like us to have done better, but reckon that will actually help improve things as players get used to playing the systems and with their new team mates. That defence will also improve a lot more as Dickie settles in and when Barbet returns.

Probably also helps in focusing minds a little more on addressing the clear gaps in the squad.

Never knowingly understood

I think we must be trying to get in a new centre midfield enforcer. Warburton rightly talked about lacking us physicality. Dykes toughens our spine at one end, Dickie perhaps at the other - but resigning Amos and bringing in Carroll doesn't give us any extra muscle in the middle. I wouldn't be surprised to see a younger Cameron/Derry type arrive.

How did Ball play today?

Steel, is it?

Stop it.

Plymouth had a raft of new signings 6 started today, havent played since march.

I admire you optimism Dane and there were some positives but in a back 5 we have a left back that cant defend and a keeper that makes everyone else nervous.

Said it before but Lumley is like what Jo Hart become more about the antics and showmanship of shouting, kicking post etc rather than just quietly doing his job

Ball played ok. Didn't close his man down for the second goal, though.

Disappointing, annoying and never nice to lose - but if ever there was a first class 'non-friendly' game to be defeated in, today was it. 24 May 2014 (I would contend) this most definitely was not...

A good run out for all the lads, 2 goals scored away, no apparent major injuries (?) and we haven't got the prospect of another utterly meaningless game(s) for a small squad to get through in the coming weeks.

It all really starts next Saturday....

Blue shorts again for no reason whatsoever.

Plymouth were in white socks, so we would have had to change them anyway.

Would you rather see blue shorts and socks or white shorts and blue socks? I know which I prefer.

Anyway being controversial, I like our kit with blue shorts, think it looks better and we should make that change permanently.

Can't agree with that at all, think it just shows how far we've sunk that we now don't just accept, but expect to lose these games.

if there is one thing the club has succeeded at is in lowering fans expectations so much that losing cup games no longer bothers (some of) us.

For me it’s the management. A blind man can see that defensively we’ve been a shambles for 18 month’s. it’s no different today -something is wrong on the coaching/management side. It’s laughable.

Leopards don't change their spots and Warbler (now official) can't change the pitiful defending ATAF

We’ve been losing games like these since about 1886.

Not sure Warburton is worried as he stated already that going futher in League Cup could hinder teams later tiredness wise.

Besides we mostly lose a silly game we ought win early in the season.

Carabao Cup - match thread 12:30 on 14:32 - Sep 5 by BrianMcCarthy

Warburton had no interest in winning that game, with the last two subs he killed the game off.

This shouldn't come as a surprise Brian,Warburton made his feelings clear regarding his priorities as soon as the fixture list came out. Our strongest team available bar two. One a defender who made no significant difference to our ability to defend last season. The other, a completely untried striker, from a league which we all accept is really poor.
We have some decent players, but when a manager (A) sends out a message weeks before the game that he would prefer if we lost to ease our fixture congestion (before we kick a ball) and (B) shows not the slightest inclination to coach our players how to defend, then we are going to have issues.
As pointed out elsewhere, we have lost the guts of 45 goals from Well/Eze/ Hugill. It's completely unreasonable to expect Dykes /Chair to pick up the slack. If they score 20 goals between them it will be a reasonable return. So one clear way to address this imbalance is to conceded less, like at least 15 goals less. Signing Dickie alone won't provide a magic solution, we tried every possible permutation with the personnel we had at our disposal , to no perceptible difference. They HAVE to be coached on how to defend or we can expect plenty goals conceded and difficult to see where goals are coming from

Reading your comments MYKE make me rather fearful this season, hadnt really thought about losing Eze, Hugill and Wells (albeit it 2 didnt belong to us).

Could be tough this season
