Four year deal.

A Dundee supporting mate of mine was very impressed when he did a stint up there. He commented that we must have good keepers if SD couldn’t make the bench.

Then we signed Kelly and he was a little baffled.

I think the fear is that so much pressure is placed on him, so that if he doesn’t keep clean sheets for several months he’ll be hounded.

He will be given good support from the fans as always: Lumley has received a lot of criticism but only after numerous errors and poor performances over a prolonged period of time.

I missed the pre season game he played for us. How did it go then?

Wimbledon were so bad they barely entered the area let alone force him into action!

Looked ok, but he had very little to do Bazz.

I certainly didn't see enough to be confident in assessing him either way.

I've just read the Warbs interview, I like the guy, think he's doing v well, but why was he so confrontational on the goalkeepers? I thought 'mixed' was a pretty generous analysis of Lumley and Kelly last season when we shipped 70+ goals in the entire season. Obviously they weren't all keeper errors, but there was a disproportionate amount of mistakes in there that cost us points, as well. Definitely didn't warrant his reaction and based on Friday night I'd be looking at that position with a bit of worry if I was him.

We've tried both keepers and they are unfortunately not cutting it, I'd love to see Dieng get a runout in the first team - hopefully this contract is the start of that.

Darren Moore is a really top guy and I rally hope he gets another big club one day soon. Plays great football.

With Dieng he needs a chance. As on other threads I think the problem with our keepers is deeper than are they any good or not. It's how they command their area given the system we play.

We have so many keepers now perhaps we should be retraining a few of them as defenders and centre forwards!

I was thinking the same, hope he (Moore) gets another crack at the Championship. Wasn’t he on our shortlist pre-Warbs?

The buildup play to Doncaster’s goal reminded me a bit of our buildup to Eze’s goal away at Stoke last season. He’s got them playing a nice style plus he was very complimentary about Dieng.

Got away with an attempted Cruyff turn but didn't have a great deal to do so can't really judge,

If he is willing to come out for crosses then he has to start

I'm sure some of the problems at corners (along with the zonal marking) is that Lumley/Kelly are reluctant to leave their line and don't command the box

I must keep an eye on this. I hadn't spotted this as a huge weakness but it may well be an area with room for improvement alright.

I do wonder what they do with Lumley now...

Shop window for the last few games, not really done himself any favours. Can't see us getting a fee in this climate for an average League 1 keeper. Give him away for free with a 40% sell on clause?

Meanwhile Chelsea’s keeper makes a couple of howlers and they just go out and spend £26m on another one.

I like the new improved Lums and don't blame him for the 3 goals from Cov. I lay the blame there with Wallace and Barbs twice.

But if Lums does not sign and we can sell him, sell him. And if he does not sign and we cannot sell him, play Dieng. Yes, that's correct, drop him right now.

We need to build for those who wish to stay. And that is what Warbs said he would do. It sends a message to Manning and BOS. With BOS we don't have the replacement so, he's an exception. With Dieng we do have a replacement so, play him. Same as Wallace, even despite his bad game.

Sign or be dropped, either now if we have a replacement or in the near future when we get one. Your choice.

zzzzzzzzzz

When you say good.... What did he do to make you think that?

I watched most games and he rarely stood out as good.

Just curious to understand what I am missing...?

Presumably with a 4 year deal they expect him to be playing a fair number of first team games over that period.

We've got 3 keepers of similar ages and, based on what we have seen or what they have done on loans at L1 clubs, of similar abilities.
We're only ever going to include 2 in the match day squad (unless Redknapp comes back), so 1 is always going to miss out. For how long will the one missing out put up with the situation?

Dominant, confident, great distribution. There was one game where he played a great ball that lead to a goal.

I guess we could dig out Clive's match reports.

I agree. I thought he was getting back to the form he showed when he first broke through.
I still see areas for improvement without a doubt but I thought he was solid enough.

I'd play Dieng starting this week against Middlesboro
Drop Lumley to the bench
Either loan out or sell Kelly

Of course it's all about individual options but in this instance Maybe a visit to Specsavers might be a good idea on your upcoming agenda.

Ok,

My view on aerials without checking back.

Lumley - capable, solid, could come more, I think he's improving on this.Forest gam was impressive.
Kelly - very solid and confident, but doesn't come often due to his height.
Dieng - Only played once, wasn't overly tested on aerials.

We don't often get hit with crosses close to the keeper often as most teams prefer to hit us on the break, deck or counter.
Set-pieces either hit the near post or - as we play zonal - way more often in-running attackers, who we have a huge problem with. Both of those types of delivery cut out the goalie.

So, overall, I don't see the goalies' lack of aerial command as a huge weakness but I'll keep an eye out as I admitted a few days ago and again yesterday that there might be room for improvement there.

the zonal thing, we matched up with their big blokes in the box - but player's didn't win their headers. A couple got caught under the ball - I wonder if they went early because they doubted their own ability to win the aerial dual.
There was quite a lot of pulling and shoving going on. This also gives the defence a problem . They get pulled up, we get a free kick, if we are pulled up, penalty. And the ref had already given what looked like a soft one.

Barbet is frequently too busy looking for and appealing for a free kick for some spurious contact or other to actually challenge properly in the air. Watch him at corners, he'll go with his man, wait for some contact, then immediately start appealing, instead of making an attempt to deal with the situation and then asking questions of the referee afterwards.
