Ryan O'Neal and Ali MacGraw waffling at each other about nothing for far too long, she ends up being terminally ill in the film and I'm sat there in the pictures thinking "oh get on with it and konk out I wanna go home" Bull shit and Top Gun wasn't much better either feel the need for speed my arse.

I'm not an Adam Sandler fan but I was prepared to give the film a go as it came highly recommended on here. I think I got as far as 30 minutes before I gave up. Not solely because of Sandler, the film itself was just unwatchable. Maybe for another thread that should probably be called vastly overatted films is the film Dunkirk. Not by any means a shyte film but hugely disappointing bearing in mind the hype. So far removed from what I had expected from a film portraying an event of such magnitude and carnage. In a way I blame Saving Private Ryan because that first 30 minutes is possibly the most intense opening scene you could see, all things considered.

| Shyte Films That You've Had The Misfortune To Witness. on 17:18 - Nov 14 by Antti_Heinola | I saw someone on twitter the other day said that Giuliani giving a press conference at the fours seasons landscaping place 'isn't funny'. And I just thought, 'it's obviously funny' - but it proves that humour is completely subjective. To me, Mrs Brown's Boys is bafflingly unfunny, but 8 million people find it hilarious, so clearly, it *is* funny. Same with taste in films - there's quite a few on this thread that I wouldn't say are brilliant, but I enjoyed. Love Story is quite lovely. Nightmare Before Christmas is great - superb animation, funny, great voice acting and a couple of belting songs. I like Eyes Wide Shut, and it only seems to get more interesting with age. Lost in Translation is a film I really enjoyed too. I love Harry Hill, his stand up is amazing, and TV Burp was the funniest thing on TV for years, but the film wasn't his finest hour. Still found some laughs in it though. But for worst films, Sex and the City 2 takes it by an absolute mile. Only just worse than the truly execrable Love Actually. But then some people love both! Love Actually's popularity is the most baffling thing in the history of film. At least even some die hard SATC fans despise SATC 2. The other night John Carpenter's They Live was on Film 4 - been wanting to watch that for a while to see what wrestler Roddy Piper was like in it. It's got a real cult following, but it was dreadful - but dreadful enough to be quite enjoyable. |
I'm with you on Mrs Brown's Boys. Some things I can't stand but can understand why others like them. Like Heavy Metal or Celebrity Juice. But Mrs Brown's Boys I can't even understand how it passes for humour. As for SATC2 I can only imagine how bad that was. I could barely stand SATC1 and I liked the series and I hear 2 was significantly worse than one. Love Actually I do like but I'm a both soft sap and think Emma Thompson was brilliant in the scene when she finds the necklace isn't for her, and when she tells Alan Rickman that he's made a fool out of her and their life together. Also found Hugh Grant dancing v funny, especially as it's so incongruent. But I do get why it makes other people cringe, and women as much as men, it's as soft as a mouldy marshmallow! I'm not with you on Love Story either, that makes me cringe. I'm another Lost in Translation fan. Most sporting films are incredibly poor. Fever Pitch was dreadful and disappointing as I'd enjoyed the book and it had the potential for being funny but wasn't. There's a film called Wimbledon, obviously about tennis, that's truly bad. As for films that had great reviews but were a letdown, French Lieutenants Woman was boring, and another one with Meryl Streep called Plenty was yawn-inducing too. You can't just have Meryl staring into the camera mournfully and call it deep and intellectual without any snappy dialogue or point you are making. | | | | Login to get fewer ads

i just think Love Actually may be the most mysoginistic film in existence and yet women seem to love it. Baffling. All the 'older' women are treated like absolute shite, the Colin Firth story makes absolutely no sense and is just a richard curtis wnk fantasy, kris marshall's story is truly horrific, the martin freeman story is rubbish, i like hugh grant, but there's no chemistry there, the kid chasing the american girl is cringe and ludicrously contrived without an original moment in it (although my god she can sing - that was first take, by the way (audio, not the visual)), and the only other person of colour in the film is mainly off screen while keira knightley sighs at the white guy who didn't have the balls to tell her he fancied her - and he's supposed to be heartbreakingly romantic, and not an absolute arsehole. The Rown Atkinson scene is ok. The Gregor Fisher storyline is all right, although I read it as a gay storyline for a while until i was forced to watch it again and realised it actually isn't. I thought he was declaring his actual love to Fisher at the end, but he's not, just friendship. Horrendous. Not to mention the awful way the fantastic Laura Linney is treated - SHE'S AN OLD WOMAN, SHE DOESN'T DESERVE HAPPINESS YOU SEE! awful.

Thanks for saving me the effort of explaining why I hate this film. In fairness, Emma Thompson is very good but the rest of the film is just appalling. "Let's go and get the shit kicked out of us by love", said by that kid, may be the worst thing I have ever seen. And I've seen Mrs Brown's Boys. [Post edited 15 Nov 2020 12:17]

It didn’t (in my eyes). Agree with Dunkirk - what a jumbled mess and lost opportunity. Uncut gems was just unpleasant from beginning to end, but I enjoyed Spanglish! Was forced to watch Mamma Mia a few weeks ago and hated it. The songs are great but not when they’re sung by people who can’t sing! On the other side of the coin, enjoyed Muriel’s Wedding. Do have a soft spot for Love Actually but can’t stand Mrs Brown’s Boys... [Post edited 15 Nov 2020 12:32]

Mind you Ted, Hugh can act given a decent part. He's brilliant in the Undoing, if you haven't seen that (it's on Sky though but really good). I think he slept through a lot of the fluffy parts he was given after Four Weddings.

Mrs Brown's Boys is not just unfunny it's embarrassing. Slapstick humour can be hilarious when it's done well (Fr Ted/Fawlty Towers), but when it depends on smutty juvenile innuendo, not so much
