England vs Germany match thread 09:19 - Jun 27 with 22290 viewstraininvain

I know it’s a bit early but let’s have your England starting 11’s and see if anyone gets it right. I’ll go first:

Pickford

James
Walker
Stones
Maguire
Shaw

Bellingham
Rice

Sterling
Kane
Saka

I’m hoping we play with the same pace and inventiveness we showed in the first half of the Czech Republic game, but I suspect Southgate will be extremely pragmatic. Agree that he’ll have a very specific plan either way: the group stage may not have been exciting but it was definitely methodical.

Big decision will be the holding midfielders and right wing. I’d be tempted to start with Saka and have him running at the German defence right from the start, go for a more adventurous pairing in the midfield 2, and start Trippier for his set pieces, which I think will be critical in such an even game, but I can also see how playing it safer makes sense. I’d go for:

Pickford
Trippier
Stones
Maguire
Shaw
Rice
Mount
Grealish
Saka
Sterling
Kane

But I think we’ll probably line up as follows:

Pickford
Walker
Stones
Maguire
Shaw
Rice
Phillips
Foden
Mount
Sterling
Kane

This Germany team are odd. They've been hammered by Spain 6-0 and lost 2-1 at home to North Macedonia recently.
Very much at the end of their cycle which saw them win the World Cup.

If you take all emotion out of it and look from an entirely neutral point of view England have the better players, are playing at home and are in better form. They very much should win.

However it doesn't always work like that.

I think Southgate's biggest strength is that he knows how to cut through the noise when it comes to International football. I believe he will have a specific plan on how to beat Germany and as we've seen in the two wins v Croatia and Czech rep (who it turns out are 2 decent sides after all) he does know what he's doing.

In a way the Scotland game was the best thing that could've happened to us. Showed the players what happens if you play with to much emotion and play the game, not the occasion.

If we stick to a plan and don't panic then we will win. If we play to the emotion and occasion we will lose

Thing is these games are a lot like Scotland games - not matter how good or bad we think they are or we are, usually they are much closer affairs.

Like you say, try and keep emotion/history out of it, but it's easier said than done.

It's totally uncharacteristic for me to be optimistic about England vs Germany, but I am.

We haven't conceded a goal.
We've got wins against decent teams without playing that well.
Just perhaps this generation of players is less mindblasted / fixated / hung up on Germany than previous generations.
This is not a great German team, and they're open at the back.

How should we play? I'd be surprised in Southgate changed shape but I think we should match them up. All Kane's recent success has come from being deep, arriving late, with fast players running beyond, not being on the shoulder. More Firmino than Shearer. That's what we should do. Now we're playing better teams we should focus more on sucking them in and then spitting them out with pace on the transition. Grealish and Foden are lovely players, but I think they're more suited for invention against teams sitting back - a great plan B if we're chasing the game. I'd prefer Sterling and Saka's pace in the channels behind their wingbacks. Phillips keeps his place for hitting long passes and for bite, but seriously consider bringing henderson in if he's really fit - would ask either of them to sit. Rice has been quiet so far, and we might not need him with a five, so would seriously consider dropping him for someone who shuttles a bit more, perhaps Mount. Chilwell offers more attacking threat than Shaw, for me, which is more necessary in a five.

Saka Sterling
Kane
Phillips Mount
Chilwell Stones Maguire Walker Trippier
Pickford

Edit: With Chilwell and Mount isolating this can't happen doh.

Mrs P and I were talking about the game earlier and both said it's testament to how much we've both fallen out of love with the England team since Italia '90, Euro '96 etc that neither of us really care whether England win or not.

Difficult to get behind a team when you dislike most of them!

Very nervous about the game now

Would be fantastic for the country if we can get through as we all need a lift

Gonna go for a nervy 1 nil win. Kane the scorer

90’ and 96’ (and 98’ for me) were halcyon days but I find this England team so much more likeable than the huge well of massive name players that came in-between then and 2018.

Those players should be struggling to sleep at night bearing in mind the opportunities they wasted in especially in 2002 and 2006.

We often forget that a lot of this side have won World Cup and Euros already at youth level.

I've found this England team very likeable in the last 3 years, don't seem to have many prats in the team, a lot of them played in the lower leagues and earned the chance.

Maybe it’s the media tearing that players get nowadays but the interviews i’ve watched with some of these lads they come across a decent guys, look at the stuff Rashford has done. I work with Saka’s mum and he comes across as a lovely young guy.

The general impression I get of them is they seem a decent, humble, grounded bunch.

I also think this is a very beatable German team, they don’t look great to me.

Come on England!

I was fine before but everyone looking nothing special this knockout round is giving me a terrible sense of foreboding about missed opportunity. Spain are pish and are walking this.

Proper shoeing from France tonight please, if they can't get knocked out somehow.

I think Rrrs Pricey is a bit out of date with the dislikeable thing - isnt that more the Terry/AShley Cole type era.

Many of these players seem a different bunch, altogether.

I also mentioned this before, but I noticed that the departure of amongst others but specifically of Alex Ferguson, and the poisonous attitude he had has helped, Rio Ferdinand confirmed this not so long ago with the club v club thing they had throughout his time, and I suspect especially between about 2000 and 2016 period whilst that wore off.

I note he does seem to regret some of that now, likewise Carragher admitting he was just glad he hadn't missed for Liverpool in that penalty shootout.

Honest maybe but explains the kind of dislike I think Rrrs Pricey is talking about.

It also didn't help how Eriksson managed things, the McLaren era, and the gloomy Capello period, and the nadir darkness before the dawn that was the Hodgson time

Hope I'm wrong, here but being the Germans......

just have a go at em, run at em, use our pace, ket them worry about us for once! it is rare to see any german side concede and they are leaking goals , leave it all on the pitch, no regrets no ifs, or we should have done this, go for it, history awaits and ENGLAND EXPECTS.

Poor penalty, though Lloris still did well to guess right, within 3 minutes Switzerland are losing.

Credit where it's due to the French.

Second half France have been unplayable and Pogba’s goal was stunning.
