| England vs Germany match thread on 09:56 - Jun 29 by gazza1 | Tonight's the night!! We can win, we are good enough, we have some very good players. Southgate to pick the right team & tactics and we will be OK. Hope he starts Pickford, Walker, Maguire, Stones, Phillips, Sterling, Grealish, Foden, Kane and 2 others, don't mind who but I want them all to play their natural positions, no rb playing LB!! Formation at the back either 2 or 3 CB's, both are good with me. Be positive and brave, move the ball quicker. Thats it in a nutshell. [Post edited 29 Jun 2021 10:00]

Unfortunately I don't think Southgate has it in him to be too brave, despite the attacking talent at his disposal. We need to score first otherwise I think we will struggle.

| England vs Germany match thread on 10:09 - Jun 29 with 1729 views | traininvain | I do worry that we might be underestimating the Germans a little bit. They looked average in a difficult group but they usually find their feet in the knockouts. I don’t subscribe to this view that it’s an over the hill German team. They have an experienced spine of the team (Neuer, Hummels, Kroos, Gundogan and Muller) with some exciting young players to compliment the experience (Gnabry, Kimmich and Musiala). Personally I think it’s a 50/50 game which could go either way. Hopefully England will get the rub of the green for once! | | | |

I just don't know about Southgate.....I find some of his decisions difficult to understand but we are good enough anyways to do well tonight.

Yeh, it is tight but I am very confident in our players......i think we have the edge but doesn't mean that we will win.

Just hope he doesn't go 5 at the back with 2 DM and Kane forgets about taking knees and rainbow armbands and concentrates on what he is paid to do. Stick the ball in the net.

If England have the right mentality and approach the game in the right way, they will win comfortably, if they don't ,they won't. This is not a strong German team. If England attack them they will score goals, if they sit back, the Germans could win 1-0

Who were and are the better candidates? El Tel or Bobby Robson for me were perfect international managers. Decent coaches, respected by the media, charasmatic and players like to play for them. Not to many of those types around anymore! Especially not to many of those types who want to move from club football to international.

Good to have that ready to copy and paste in the morning! But yeah I' m not sure who the better candidates out there are (or at least English/British ones). And as we've seen international management is very different to club management, just look at how Capello got on, or didn't.

I think Kensal was being facetious but for the record both El Tel (47%) and Bobby (49%) both have worse win rates than Southgate (61%). Also equalled their achievements at international level. I’d argue both of them had better players than Southgate too. [Post edited 29 Jun 2021 12:50]

But also had a more competitive international environment? I know San Marino were about but these days it seems like every other game is against someone who has never kicked a ball.

Looking at wiki, Sven and Capello also had pretty decent win percentages but I think the manager of England lives and dies on public perception and romance rather than performance. Of course you can change that with some good performances, like Southgate has, but we can be such an emotive nation that results are quickly forgotten if you're not a darling of the masses.

Well good performances are subjective but in the end a win is a win. Or at least that seems to be the Southgate approach so far.

Sorry, I meant performance of the team in tournaments rather an individual game. Southgate does seem to be going for pragmatism rather than pizazz. Fine by me if we go onto win it.

Stats eh......make what you want of them but it is far too simplistic (& therefore meaningless) to credit Southgate as better records than others.....for example, friendlies are more friendly than ever, weak teams are played so much in qualifying competitions that the result is not in question.
