| Just back 19:11 - Jan 8 with 9514 views | BlackCrowe | Wow that was a laboured performance and we escaped by the skin of our teeth against a very solid and physical Rotherham side who must've felt a bit mugged at the end. Struggle to come up with many positives apart from excellent penalties from both teams. Stef was excellent in the first half but faded. Thomas out of his depth mostly - has the air of a headless Connor Washington, running around lots but the game passing him by. Didn't really like Gray's attitude either, forever berating his teams mates throughout the game whilst missing a couple of good chances himself. Someone needs to have a word. But we're through and West Brom lost, also had Added Time and a red card, so our confidence should be steady enough going into next Saturday's mega game. | |

Dykes showed Gray and Austin how to do it. It was a tricky chance and he put it away. Especially as their keeper was doing a Brizzle impression. Archer was quite poor in the air, but seems he has a decent enough approach to pens. Saving two as he clearly did and the winner being amazing save I think we have to give him credit for.

| Just back on 22:16 - Jan 8 by strikerace | I wasn't there but I was watching on TV, and every time they showed Warbs I thought there was Austin on the bench behind him, bundled up in one of those big coats. In fact the commentators pointed out he was biting his nails at the end of extra time. |
He sat in the Ellserslie when he got subbed in the second half. He was right by the touchline when the board went up. I did wonder if he'd get a bit chilled but thought it was just a bit of cool bricklayer attitude. If it was about him being annoyed that would make sense tbh, especially since Gray was well into his best impression of Jabba the Hutt at that point.
| Just back on 00:23 - Jan 9 with 2403 views | NorthantsHoop | Regardless of how we played, we just needed to not lose this match. Calm heads in the penalty shoot out and a good penalty saving performance from Archer, shame about his injury as I thought he generally had a decent game. | | | |

I felt the same when he came back last January but he found that magic again to pull us up the table fair play to him. Once he signed the new contract something changed IMO.He is either carrying an injury or just unable to get fully fit at this stage of his career. He appears to be way more aggressive / unhappy on the pitch but can still find the space to bury one or 2 .He should have won it for us with that great run and volley from the SJ corner only their keeper was amazing. Lets hope no rift appears between Austin and MW we need all hands on deck for the next few months

There were spells where both team looked good, but mostly going through the motions. The Rotherham keeper made two excellent saves first and second half, which kept them in the game. The Charlie thing was a bit odd. About 10/15 mins (I can’t remember exactly how long) after he did a very slow jog in front of the loft and back to the dug out. It was confusing as I thought he’d gone off and had no idea what he was doing there. He does have a strange demeanour… I wonder if he’s a bit annoyed/frustrated about playing so deep. I imagine he wanted to be playing where Gray was? | | | | Login to get fewer ads

Honestly don't think it's his application, looked on it pre-season and then got injured. I'm not sure he's been right since.

If you have GLT technology 'linos' will never give these one way or the other!

I think he did go down the tunnel and maybe had a shower and got himself together and came back to cheer on the team. He looked really hacked off when he finally left the Ellerslie and didn't really acknowledge any of the crowd who were giving him an excellent reception. But he was very supportive of everyone at the end.

Always liked Warne and now he's gone up another notch - a great gesture, nice to see such sporting attitude Correct spelling :-( [Post edited 9 Jan 2022 10:59]

Yes he makes Rotherham a team to be respected. Always seems to show dignity and composure.

It was a good yard over. My seat is right above that, Keeper clearly knew it was over and tried to pull it back. I got the impression the linesman was just passing the bick to the technology, the say way they do with VAR. If they didn't have that he might have given it.
| Just back on 11:04 - Jan 9 with 1329 views | gobbles | On another subject, we've got to play Walsh. I'd hate to see some emergency loan come in. Have some faith in our young keeper, whether it is for one game or six and put an U23 on the bench. If we are in the business of developing talent, a few games for Walsh now, followed by a loan could be the making of him. [Post edited 9 Jan 2022 12:44]

Walsh looked very good in the warm up before the game. Watched him & Archer closely when they trained in the temporary goal.

Similar to the Stoke game. He's coming far too deep at the moment, needs to simplify things and spend more time in the width of the posts Overall it was poor from the whole team really, Gray missed 2 really good chances and just spent so much of the game moaning. Dykes, Archer and Dunne were the only real positives from the game. I felt a bit for Thomas, he had a good first half but never got into the game second half.

I noticed the first thing Dykes did after the shoot out was go to the Rotherham players to shake hands rather than head for Archer, I thought that was also quite classy and respectful.

Big fan of Dykes but thought he had a very poor period yesterday as tried to get to grips (literally) with the physicality of League 1 defending - if we think the Championship is more physical than the Premiership then League 1 is another level. In League 1 everyone defends similar to Dunne (as opposed to Barbet & Barbet) where you win the wrestle and the right to get to the ball first, and then you think about contact with the ball. Even though Dykes had a very poor period in the game he was at least challenging for the out ball up the middle which was non-existent in the 1st Half. Also thought his movement for the chance he should have scored was excellent as was his header for his goal. Even when not playing well, I think how Dykes ties up Centre Halves to allow Chair and Willock space to play is key to our season.
| Just back on 12:20 - Jan 9 with 1097 views | WatfordR | Ok, so it wasn't a great performance, very clearly, however it would be fair to say that we had enough good, clear chances to have won that by two or three goals in 90 minutes; Thomas nutmegged himself with a tap in waiting first half, and both Gray and Dykes had chances they really should have converted in the second. Think we're being a bit unfair on Thomas, a rare start and I thought he had a decent first half - the miss aside. No one's covered themselves in glory today, but it's a game that let's be honest, both clubs could do without, winning causes further fixture congestion - we've now got to fit in Sheff U and Millwall somewhere. It's a massive positive that the team weren't prepared to lie down and let the game go, and as I said earlier, I'm not sure I can think of a past Rangers team that would have got into Round 4 from where we were at half time extra time. Whether that turns out to be a positive for the club or not, we'll probably not know until the season's done. I honestly didn't see them offering much threat at all, other than with their aerial challenges for the ball, which in the first half particularly were elbow led pretty much every time. If they weren't winning the aerial ball, they were pulling shirts off backs, but as far as I can recall, they weren't pulled back once by the ref, who, along with the Ellerslie Road lino was fairly poor imo. We've only got the goalline technology (apparently) to thank for not being mugged off yet again. The ref didn't know whether it was a goal, neither did the lino, and I also wasn't convinced that the ref knew whether Barbet's late challenge was a pen or not. No signalling to suggest that was the case anyway. Looking forward to West Brom, I think we'll see Willock and Field back, and I suspect we'll go two up again, probably with Dykes and Gray starting. It's a big big ask to expect Walsh to come in against a big physical team, but I'm not sure we've much choice. Could we really expect a new keeper to come in and click with what we are doing? In conclusion, I'm not so worried about yesterday's game, but I'm just hoping that it's not one we look back at as a negative turning point in our season | | | |
