So many genres to choose from that didn't float my boat then suddenly will find a track that is really cool, thankfully my tastes are much more eclatic than they used to be and the various music threads on here have been an eye/ear opener with some of the tracks listed.

Still can't stand rap though !

Top of my list is Queen followed by Queen, then Queen again.

Utter , utter bilge

How could I have forgotten them? That guitar sound - May's done it to death. And his guitar solo on the roof of Buck Palace - cringeworthy.

It’s almost an annual thread but I’ll take any opportunity to call The Killers an over-rated pile of doggy poo when I can.

I need a SAGA. What’s the SAGA? It’s ….. Queen’s Park Rangers.

My choice is Radiohead, not because I especially dislike them, but because of the bafflingly extreme adulation they provoke. I've got a friend who will move mountains to watch them absolutely anywhere, from Moscow to Melbourne, whatever the cost.

It's a fun idea for a thread but it's just about bands or music we don't like, isn't it?

The world and its dog seem to rate ABBA. I simply cannot listen to them and never have. Yet, one or two bands mentioned already such as the Beach Boys are also universally rated that I love.

Personal tastes Shirley.

Oasis wouldn't even make my top 50 least favourite bands - I'm just completely indifferent to most of their tracks. They're generally so bland and dull that I zone out and forget they're being played after about 30 seconds. Half The World Away or Champagne Supernova make me feel like I'm slipping into a coma. Someone like Queen, on the other hand, I really struggle to stay in the room when Queen are playing, so if it was bands we can't stand, they'd be right up there.

Fulham FC: It's the taking part that counts

I vaguely remember a most underrated and overrated band thread a while back… anyway most overrated for me is REM. I saw them supporting U2 in the late 80’s and they were terrible.

I absolutely love R.E.M. and have seen them many times.

However, when I saw them at Wembley Arena on the Green tour, it was the worst gig I have ever been to.

"Remember to listen to me but look at her. Don't get it the wrong way round. That would be hideous."

pretty much any manifactured girl/boy band. Rip off tribute acts, never got gangsta rap.

It's all subjective, but I bet a lot of the bands/artists we can't stand or we feel are overrated are better than the dross/drivel seen on the Brits last night. But this is the view of a 58 year old rock fan.

the same. Saw them at Milton Keynes bowl during the U2 longest day gig. They were awful.

Never knowingly understood

I would add Status Quo but did anyone really rate them in the first place!

Interesting comments re Queen to which I'd agree. I place them in the same 'Overproduced Pop Fluff' category as ABBA.

Once Status Quo discovered people liked a cheesy rock 'n' roll riff that's all they did. They were seen as a bit of a joke after that. I and most people I knew would never listen to them.

the trouble is that many long standing bands have been through peaks and troughs.

Lets take Oasis for example - the first two albums were, at the time, edgy and interesting. But then they got full of themselves and produced dross, riding on their reputation.

Parachutes is an excellent album, but more recent Coldplay stuff hasnt been up to that standard as they changed style.

Radiohead are another band that changed styles and went off.

i get the need to be creative and not churn out the same old stuff, but it doesnt always work

But if you really really want overrated - just look at the charts right now. I know IM 50 odd and not supposed ot like youth music, but its all so autotuned and refined its absolutely awful.

Why stop now, just when I'm hating it

Like everyone of a certain age, I couldn't escape hearing ABBA as they were almost omnipresent on the radio and TV. I meant I never chose to listen to them.

I've pretty eclectic musical tastes but, like most people, there are certain genres I don't like.

Well I guess it depends on your perspective. The worst bands to me are the ones I find least interesting. I’m no Queen fan by a long stretch but I wouldn’t say they’re not interesting.

Completely agree. I listened to Nirvana's Nevermind the other day and turned it off from boredom but it changed music for a bit so I can't call it overrated.

U2 simultaneously ran out of ideas and got delusions of grandeur but at their best the work still stands up (if you like that sort of thing) and The Edge was groundbreaking. Same goes for the Smiths and Johnny Marr.

I'd nominate the Rolling Stones - maybe biggest rock band in the world but look at the way The Beatles changed music, you can hear them in new bands all the time, but where are the bands who sound like the Stones?

I'm also going to go out on a limb about an artist I love, Bowie - not at all overrated except that he was at his hugest in the 80s when he did his worst stuff.

The first band that came to mind. Saw them at The Venue in New Cross when there was a big buzz about them and thought they were bang average. I know a lot of people love them and it’s all about opinions, but to me, they have 2-3 decent/good tunes and the rest of it is completely forgettable and dull.

At the time of the great Blur/Oasis rivalry I remember someone got Damian Allbarn on the radio and played a bit of "Roll with it" and asked for his reaction - which was to start clunkingly singing "Whatever You Want" by Quo, which I thought cruel but funny.

The thing with ABBA is that I'm old enough to remember them and absolutely no-one rated them at all at the time. They came out of Eurovision (a joke in itself) and were bland chart pop with mindless non-political lyrics for little girls with no taste.

10-20 years later the same people listened again, maybe ironically, and started saying "hang on, that's a great tune; and now I think of it, the lyrics about break-ups are maybe a bit more profound than "I want teenage kicks all night" after all; and maybe those harmonies are actually pretty clever..." (Btw Glenn Matlock said that both he and Sid Vicious were big fans and he ripped off SOS for the riff of Pretty Vacant)

Kinda swung the other way now, they're supposed to be a national treasure or something, but for a bit they were the most under-rated band in the world.

Interesting view on ABBA, Cider, and I get where you're coming from. Given they were in the charts and on the TV and radio constantly I'd still maintain they were overrated back then.

BTW, I'd agree with you regarding Bowie. I still listen to Hunky Dory and Spiders but rarely any of the others.

Maybe it's just because I'm getting old, but I suggest the answer is any band formed over the past 20 years. Music isn't as good nowadays as it used to be when I was young ...

Yeah I rate ABBA mostly for their production. Up there with some of the best recordings ever made IMO.
