Thames Water on brink of going bust now!

£60bn paid to shareholders over the last 30 years from British water companies but if it folds taxpayers get to pick up the debt of circa £14bn.

I might be a capitalist at heart but even I can see this is plain wrong. Big companies are shafting the public from every angle, it’s amazing people are taking hit after hit in the chin. Somethings got to give.

What a mess this country has got itself in.

Only 1/2 of what the tories tell us that Labour will spend in helping the country get back on its feet again, but it will all go on bailing out 1 company.

So much for "Risk and Reward" eh?

The owners of these critical utiltities aren't entrepreuners who have real skin in the game looking to build something. They're opportunists looking to make an easy buck, safe in the knowledge if it all goes t1ts they'll get bailed out by the mug that is the Britidh tax-payer courtesy of this spent government.

I say let it go, pull it back into public ownership, maybe it will send the message that we're no longer a soft touch to the parasites leaching off our utilities.

On a personal note my annual domestic Thames water bill is north of £1300pa on one of their meters, (and no I don't have a pool seldom water the garden) yet my neighbour pays a flat fee of less than £500 - what is that all about?

Like the OP said, what a mess we're making of this country.

Here in Hammersmith we have had two breaks in supply in recent months. Not to bring up Clause 4 arguments but things like water and power supply should be under tight control.

£1300 a year. That’s close to extortion isn’t it?I switched to a water meter 18 months ago and I’m paying about £350 a year, and I’m in one of the driest parts of the country.

It's not really capitalist, though, is it. There's no competition with natural monopolies. It's a kind of kleptocracy in which public assets are funnelled into private pockets while failure is underpinned by the public. Same with rail and energy.

I think we can safely say that Thatcher's policy of nationalisation of public utilities has been absolutely disastrous for the country. A lot of the profits made over the decades have gone to shareholders many of them overseas. Therefore reinvestment has been minimal resulting in poorer services costing more. I would be much happier if water, gas and the railways were renationalised and owned by the people again, services run for people not for profits!

Up here, the previous CEO was on £2m a year basic, kept United Utilities making money (£650m profit last year after tax, so got a £2m bonus) on the back of attrocious acts of dumping and contaminating.

Now, the previous CEO left, and a new one was appointed from within UU at Lingley (warrington) and got awarded a wage of £2.1m in her first year....not bad huh? Except she was also awarded £3m 'golden hello' just for coming into work on day 1.

Trust me, that new CEO shouldnt even be in the job. incompetance, and ignorance...... the CEO of 2023!

I second that (e)motion. Back when utilities were nationalised they became the butt of comedians' jokes “ Gor Blimey mate, British Railways….strewth !
My memory is like a colander but I don't remember things being as bad as this.

But yet everyone rolls their eyes when you mention Corbyn and says "it would have been worse with him" ... but would it?

Of course, it would not have been, May, Boris, Truss, Sunack and for sure Starmer are all way worse than Corbyn.

Yet everyone rolls their eyes, why? Becuase the papers and the word "socialism" mean Corbyn is bad. So, woke, being that man on his British bicycle, riding to his very British allotment to make his very British jam ... yes yes so woke!

Lets be clear, all this talk of "well some things should be nationalised", is you, yes you being WOKE! Becuase you don't really believe that do you? Its all talk when the obvious goes wrong, as when someone does offer that, you always vote for the ardent marketeer as somehow in the long run that will better and push down any view contrary when its election time.

Thanks to capitalism, Britain is the sick man of Europe, it's a fact now (notice the papers don't mention that when it's as true as it's ever been).

Stop being a bunch of snowflakes and admit finally that nationalisation is needed for ALL major industries, you don't even have to have socialism for that, no more privatisations. If any industry is nationalised now, it stays that way for good, but really let's be honest you don't really want it, you want a broken country rather than a great one.

Corruption in plain sight. Here's a good example of some easy money from across the pond and as they say at the end, it "has worsened over the past few decades", so it's not exactly a new problem and nothing will be done about it.

Thirty Years plus they've been privatised, you'd think they would have got the hang of It by now???

We're TW as you would expect In South Oxfordshire and we have a water softener installed and have had for over 30 Years, as for drinking water we absolutely filter every drop of water that we drink through a Berkey water filter, the Initial cost of said filter was a wee bit expensive but worth It.

My Father had a profound influence on me, he was a lunatic.

The obsession with privatised public utilities is a grotesque betrayal of all of us. Recently had a water meter fitted against my wishes as Thames water are in a water stressed region but they seem to be THE reason we are water stressed in the first place as they lose most of the water they treat !

It's circular argument that we all have to pay for while they DO NOT have to monitor any of their network for leaks from treatment to your meter while making you pay for the every unit used. Experts suggest they lose 3 units for every unit billed !

We pay for their mistakes and we pay the shareholder all at the same time.

Thames Water going bust should be the death knell for privatisation. But it won't be. The rich and powerful will ensure their interests will continue to be served.

I've got no problem with capitalism, it's the least bad option we currently have. BUT it was always madness to introduce 'competition' and profit into public services. It doesn't seem to have had any long term benefit and has cost squillions more. I'm furious that we are having to bail out such a flawed scheme. The banks didn't annoy me as much as that was a global issue but this is purely self inflicted. Dogma is always dangerous in politics and rides roughshod over equity and common sense.

And none of the people who espoused these schemes and profited from them will suffer, it will of course be the ordinary tax payers who don't benefit from offshore investments or Panamanian assets. They should hang their heads in shame except that they clearly have no shame.

Muddy Waters went to the doctor and said he was depressed.
The doctor examined him, asked lots of questions then said “ yes, I'm afraid you've got the blues. That'll be 5000 dollars “

Unfortunately, it always end this way without a firm state and with weak careering politicians. Capitalism begets capitalism. Looking at the next election it's extremely grim - the Tories are beyond caring and are all ejecting into the private industry (weird!) and Labour would sell their own grandmother for a 5 grand 'donation'.

Focusing on water privatisation - it's broken. We know it, they know it, everyone knows it... Doesn't matter. There will be no real repurcussions for anyone personally or for the industry at large, they'll either fold and form a new company overnight or receive a slap on the wrist and a *gasp* committee 'grilling' will extract some false promises and we'll do this again in X years.

Except it'll be worse

I don't understand how they are paying shareholders £60 Billion in dividends when the co is in debt for the same amount ?

How does that work - I thought shareholders got paid from the profits 🤷🏻‍♂️

Obviously must be missing something simple 🤦🏽

I know almost nothing about the Premier League even though I try to catch the big games every now and then at the end of the season. But I will say this, Queens Park Rangers is just a fukking sick ass team name. Just sounds so cool.
