TAA never turned up for early Tuchel squads so that left him out of the picture. He also clearly doesn't rate him and wanted James as his first choice which was always a risk but I'd agree with him that James is a better player.
The mistake made, and I say this with hindsight, was playing James in the group games, should have saved him for the knockouts |

Well we found a way but we're not going to get much further with that defence, the top teams will have a field day. And much as we moan about Tuchel's selections I don't think he really had too many options at the back, maybe he could still have taken Maguire but he probably would have got pelters for sticking with the old guard! Maybe bring Stones back in for the next game and put Rice at RB as suggested but really I don't think it will make much difference.
Bottom line we just need to score one more goal than the opposition. But home advantage for Mexico will be huge and I can't see any way past them, it's a 1am kick off so I think I'll give that one a miss thanks. Maybe I'll wake up to an amazing England victory/one of the great performances but I somewhat doubt it! |  |

I agree but he came in those Autumn games last season and did well so was seen as the back up full back whilst arguably the better players like Trent, Palmer etc were all injured. Tuchel has placed so much on those camps when players turned up and got some good results for him.
I'd be surprised if he doesn't change it on Sunday and play Konsa at right back with Stones back in the middle. |  | | |

Mexico haven't beaten a top 10 ranked team at the Azteca since beating Brazil in 1999 in the Confederations Cup final.
Yes, the altitude and lack of acclimatisation will be a small issue and their home record looks impressive but is stat padded by beating basically pub teams in WC qualifiers. They haven't beaten the USA there in a qualifier since 2009 the last three being draws. |  |

ok after the dust settles and euphoria of a big win for England, pickford does my nut in, beaten at near post and got a hand on it but it went in, deflected or not? spence drawn out of position and left 2 on 1 , where were his other back 3? all game o'reilly went wandering too .
that back 4 was a mess . rice had to draw deep from the well .spence has an attitude imo, he got frank sacked at spurs when he refused to shake hands etc and ignored manager, do i take him to a world cup, based on a few prem games? no.
tuchel wanted him to take a throw in forwards, he went back and tuchel flew into him and spence instantly stopped and imo sulked , we were still 1-0 down and needed to get forward.
congo exceeded all expectations, did not low block and hit post, at 2-0 we were in doo doo but we broke and how we never get a pen i will never know ( bear in mind how lucky belgium were later at 2-2 and a 7 min var review fora minimal contact) . once we got level congo dipped, their goalie was motm then KANE blew the roof off , wow! a saviour indeed . it is a win. it seems the 3-4 day turnaround to mexico , england have decided we won't acclimatize anyway so will go there late and just cope? at altitude . gonna be tough. we have to keep possession and take any chances we get | | | |

Seems to me that whichever two start wide, they're invariably poor. Then, the two who come on look good, up things, and we clamour for them to start. Whereupon, they look pony and the two who were rubbish in the previous game come on, and change things.
Poor defence, dodgy keeping, foreign manager, injuries, and then you start thinking: swap the Three Lions on the shirt for three blue hoops, and you've basically got QPR at the Azteca on Monday. | |

The altitude is going to be a huge issue. It takes two weeks to acclimatise, England have two days.
For comparison, SA rugby union playing at the Highveld, 1500m above sea level and are unbeatable there. We are playing at 2000m.
We'll be struggling physically from 60 minutes onwards so we can't be losing else we're done. It'll be like watching QPR in September after Bicycle Ben has been conditioning them, so at least it won't be a shock for any of us! | |

Spence has been playing in an appalling Spurs defence as a left back. He has a broken jaw. Now he's playing in a knockout World Cup for England as a right back with a broken jaw.
It doesn't matter how many times the coach's position is repeated about the squad by others for this in particular not to seem a foreseeable error of judgement. Chalobah for LIvramento was a very bad call when you have Tent Alexander Arnold at home. Not least when England kept mishitting crosses too.
Konsa and Spence are not right back for their clubs. Quansah has played there three times in two years. It's not serious if the plan was to have two players for each position plus three.
I don't think Spence's a bad player, but he's not an international right back. Taking two highly fragile, prone to injury right backs and then, because they're both injured, having to play Spence with a broken jaw on the right with players he's not played with beside him and in front of him is a big fcking error that everyone foresaw.
I would have picked several different players for the squad, but whatever. I'm not a manager, coach or aware of the dynamics of spending six weeks in camp.
Nobody can convince me, however, that England would have not been significantly improved by bringing TAA and Palmer in particular, even as "finishers", and MLS or Wharton to change the midfield dynamic in games.
The camps bit...I dunno. France have some absolutely monstrous egos sitting on the bench. It's up to elite coaches to manage those.
None of this matters. England are through. But watching it, a mate in the pub said the ostracising of talent that the FA have spent a decade nurturing through the international age groups, winning cups, for just these tournaments was similar to Anorim at Man United. Rang a bell.

My (albeit limited) theory, is that we played a team in Croatia that wanted to play against us, and it was very open and full of goals. We then played 3 teams that played not to lose (Congo less so), so I'm thinking that Mexico will come at us, and definitely score, but we'll find gaps and score also.

We had a barbecue at the hotel on night one.
I woke up alone in the most beautiful hotel room I think I've ever stayed in at this all-inclusive place for a friend's wedding near Cancun. The room was a perfect circle, with one third of it floor to ceiling windows looking out at the ocean, and then the back third a gorgeous open plan bathroom/wet room separated from the main thing with a wooden screen and a double bed bigger than my first flat in London.
I got up, incredibly content, bollock naked, wandered around to the bathroom sink to brush my teeth, and I'm standing there minding my own business while my leccy toothbrush does its thing. Felt a little fart coming on, and I was in the room by myself, so I didn't really think twice about letting that go. I mean, what harm can come? ...
I swear, by the blood of Jesus, it was like Indiana Jones opening the The Ark of the Covenant.
