That sinking feeling again – Report on 10:59 - Oct 7 by stainrods_elbow

Lest we stop the truth getting in the way of a good (bad) story, we had similar possession to them by the end of the game, 3 decent on-target efforts compared to their 5 (Dembele, Smyth, and Field), and actually marginally exceeded their goak attempts (11 to 10), so saying it's all doom and gloom is a bit masochistic imo.

We now have a ridiculous 5 of our next 7 games at home, starting with Portsmouth in a fornight, so we'll know a lot more by the end of November. Win at least 3 of those, and we'll be in a better place.

What's your point? I contain multitudes. That was Hull. This was Derby. And I'm not even the same person I was one minute ago and write for different purposes with different feelings on different days. Go figure!

This is, for me, a more balanced, accurate and less emotive summation (I, uh, know it's me talking). Derby aren't a bad side at all and may well be challenging in the top 6. Clive's report, while legitimately angry with the two goals conceded, omits a much better final 20 minutes, where, if Smyth's shot beats the keeper, or even Field's excellent header goes in late on, it's not inconceivable we could have salvaged it. While they could certainly have had three or four, on another game we might have lost 4-2 or drawn 2-2.

My big beef is why, once again, we only really played properly/purposefully and asserted ourselves for less than a quarter of the game. The opening of the Hull game aside, there are serious questions now for me about Marti and his sidekick's ability to set us up to begin games properly.

Be suspicious of the personnel who only play well when they’re 2-0 down.

I’d be genuinely interested to know what everyone was thinking at half time. Was it just me thinking ‘pretty decent away performance so far, a couple of scary moments but we’ve battled to a rare clean sheet, and while not really creating enough clear chances, we’re getting the ball forward a lot quicker and have made Derby work for their clean sheet. 0-0 about right so far.’

10 minutes into the second half we threw that away with two criminally conceded goals and it was game over. Marti changed the shape and I thought that was a good call, but the damage was done and while chasing the game Nardi kept the score down at our end.

But I still feel that 90 seconds of madness cost us in an otherwise pretty even game.

Yes ever since his MotM performance v WBA, Andersen has been shocking, yes Madsen was anonymous yet again, yes we couldn’t be without three more important players, yes it’s worrying how only Nardi of the new signings has hit the ground at any sort of pace, and yes I fear a loss of confidence that could lead to a relegation battle. This is when we find out how good Marti really is.

But I was surprised by the vitriol around me at full time, and am surprised this report suggests a one-sided game. I agree it was a match of contrasting styles and their style won the day. But I did still feel our old friend ‘fine margins’ had a role to play…as I say, what was everyone thinking at half time?

I was quite amused / irritated by the BBC report. Opening para said Derby enjoyed a “dominant win over an insipid QPR”. However, the bit clearly written mostly at half time said “while QPR were menacing going forward in the first half, with the creativity of Dembele to the fore, and had a spell on top in the closing stages, they looked far from comfortable at the back throughout.” The dominant / insipid line made for the sexier opening, but I felt the other para was more measured.

I’m not saying we don’t have major concerns, far from it. But for me this wasn’t one of those tipping point games - some of the boos / anger at half time suggest for many it was.

I thought it was fairly even first 20 minutes as both teams were pretty bad. For the last 25 mins of the first half they stepped up their intensity and we didn’t. We needed at least one change at half time but he didn’t make any and the second half started like the first ended…but worse!

Yeh the game's gone then, opposition can just sit there. And it was in this 20 minutes when we were supposedly at our best that Nardi had to make two brilliant saves to stop it being a blow out.

There were problems across the entire team on Saturday, but the stand out one for me was that we simply didn't have a midfield.

Of course, Field and Madsen were in the midfield but not once do I recall us progressing the play through the middle, which is no surprise when Field is ultra defensive/cautious and Madsen is doing his Invisible Man act.

All we ever seem to do is play it across the back, slowly and clumsily, get it wide to players like Saito and Smyth and then hope that something comes off. We don't have any attacking threat or pace through the centre and we are almost as predictable to watch as we are dire. To compound the problems, we don't have a good striker - Frey has done ok but isn't going to get many and Celar may never score, at least while we play like this.

It's going to be a very long season and we can only wish for the speedy return of JCS, Colback, a fully fit Chair and possibly Varane (?).

Suffering since 1978.

The game hadn't 'gone' at 70 minutes, obviously, or even at 90. In that fabled game in 2010, we scored two goals to tie it up in added time. And it's actually a testament to how we were trying to do so that Nardi played his part with a flying save during that time - which is hardly surprising.

What did we create in that 20 minutes to make it seem better? I thought we passed it about a bit but apart from one header from Field did we have any other chances? Derby were in cruise control and could have scored twice in that period

What actually summed the day up in this supposed glorious 20 mins was Bennie putting a decent header across the six yard box and no Rangers player was within 20 yards of it .

I didn't say it was Barcelona; I said it was better. Smyth had a shot saved, Field's effort was brilliantly stopped, and I think Dembele had a go. My point was, if belatedly, we raised our game and pinned them back a bit. The two (poor) goals aside, and as the stats go, there wasn't much between two mediocre teams.

My text message to my son at half time in it’s entirety:

“ so dull it’s beyond belief. Little bits of good play but they never last longer than a few seconds. Too easy at times to fend space between our back 4 and midfield .
Their keeper made a good save from Dembele.

Only 46% passing accuracy in the final third for us in that first half . So poor that stat!

Yes I saw the Meslier error last night . Not sure what he was doing ? 🤣”

I used dull, but I could have used slow, weak, poor, feeble, disinterested…..etc

I think calling them mediocre is being kind to both teams, although we were worse than Derby.

As ever Clive is spot on with this.

One thing that grabs me is - was the routine for the first goal a new one for Derby? I hope so but suspect it wasn't.

Did we not have them watched beforehand? No-one in our defence seemed to be expecting that. (It was oddly reminiscent of the thing Venables did with us circa 1982!)

Is it Xavi Calm who oversees the defensive stuff? If so he remains Mr. Calm but I am Mr. Bloody Furious.

As always, a very good summation of what we all saw unfold before us Saturday (a great day out spolied by.....)
In acknowledging that was a fair scoreline, I would like to make one outrageous attempt at clutching for some straws. Spotted at the time and again on TV, I reckon the lino should have flagged for their first goal, (player offside in Nardis eyeline between him and the scorer) Even if the ref consulted and overruled, IMO there was an infringement which the lino should have helped with. Before you all laugh, take one more look. Poor defending yes but offence commited, hmmm, yes!

It feels like an annual event where we find ourselves back in the same place at this stage of each season. I have lost count of how many home games we have lost 3-0 or 3-1 over the past two seasons. Only four home games into this league season and we have sustained two 3-1 home defeats already.

Thirteen games played against teams up from league 1 in the same period of time and one win to show for it. It is pitiful and I won't be making any rash predictions that we will beat Portsmouth. It seems nobody within the club is capable of solving our rubbish home form or get us to match the commitment of promoted teams. Why is it we can apply the basics against relegated sides like Luton and Sheffield United but when we play ex league 1 sides we don't compete?

Different managers and different players in these three seasons but everything still seems to be the same. Can't win at home, cannot beat promoted teams, don't score enough goals, seemingly replace players with equal or less ability than those who leave, who are mentally weak, easily brushed off the ball and look undersized for the physicality of this league. Armstrong and Dykes struggled in front of goal and replaced by Frey and Celar who struggle too for goals. Other clubs bring in players who improve them but we seem to remain static replacing an inadequate player with another one who can't do the basics. Unless we can get out of this rut it will continue to be a relegation struggle every season.

I feel sorry for season ticket holders having to keep watching a team that doesn't win at home very often at great cost. To think a Dortmund season ticket costs around £200 to watch football that isn't boring...

The last decade has shown us that this is our level.

We have consistently signed gash players and failed to produce anything from our academy. We don’t pay competitive wages and are stuck in a money draining stadium.

I’ve accepted all of this. I continue to renew my season ticket and attend as many games as possible. I support the team and don’t boo players. But, what I can’t accept is the insanity of thinking that some of these players are going to improve in a meaningful way.

The final straw for me has been Andersen’s dip in form. Watching him play last season gave me hope for our future/direction. We can’t control what goes on at the club, we just have to ride out these poor performances and enjoy the rare victories when they come.

Last season was rubbish, but there were a few great moments and I guess that’s what we’re chasing . Last minute worldies against Birmingham or destroying LeedsLeedsLeeds at home under the lights.
