Ashby. on 19:32 - Jan 11 with 1380 views | Logman | Ashby's cover today would have been Ronnie Edwards who was playing his first full game for us. So it would be a big ask for Edwards to do Ashby's job for him as well as his own. I thought the match just showed that Ashby and several others aren't good enough. I said it 3 weeks ago after Preston. There is an unacceptable gulf in class in the squad. Field, Varane, Cook, Smyth, Kolli etc etc etc all good enough. Ashby, Celar, Madsen, Andersen, Santos, not good enough and need to go. [Post edited 11 Jan 19:33]

Young compared to Kakay vs Millwall He’s just turned 23 and has played what 20 championship games ? Kakay played 100. Ridiculous comparison [Post edited 11 Jan 19:48]

He’s 23. Agreed. Way past development

There far too many of these kind of players. Playing PL2 games every week on pristine development pitches against other millionaires with no actual game experience. Get to 22/23 and haven't played more than a handful of pro games, maybe not any at all. Suddenly the PL team that's hoovered them up has decided they need game time somewhere and here we are. We have no business taking players with less than 20 pro appearances on loan to play in our team. Again, it's not a fckin mess about league and we're not a charity. Unless they're the next Kyle Walker, we should focus on what we have in the building.

Ashby. on 20:44 - Jan 11 with 1011 views | StreathamRanger | Missed most of the game today. Just watched the highlights. Given the absolute meltdowns on here I was actually expecting worse from Ashby. Yes, he's done horribly where he tries to cut inside and gets robbed. Stupid error and he needs to cut that out. Penalty I thought was a bit unlucky. He's sliding in to try and block the cross. Not sure he has all that much control of where his arms are. Saito gives the ball away very cheaply in the build up to that one. Didn't look as bad overall as the Fox horror show against Portsmouth. Edwards looked a bit shaky on his full debut. The addition of Jimmy Dunne at right back next week should help him and hopefully JCS will be fit enough to play a few games in a row.

Don’t disagree with your list of who isn’t good enough but how would we get rid of them? No one would buy them and they are all under contract. The fact we have a lot of players who aren’t good enough - and a number of who are - is precisely why we are a mid table Championship team. It’s the same at most clubs around us in the league I expect. The disappointment is how poor the last window was for us relative to outlay. All bar a couple of the players who are good enough were in the building last season and everyone who isn’t good enough is a new arrival

Ashby. on 18:13 - Jan 11 by StreathamRanger | Last couple of home games he's looked fine to me. Sure he's made the odd mistake but he's committed and he's putting himself about. We're a lower midtable championship team so we're going to end up with players who have the odd error in them. I'm not saying we should look to sign him next season but loans are part of the game. He's not keeping a promising youngster out of the team so he's fine as back up to Jimmy Dunne for now. |
Well against Luton first half he was awful but came good in the 2nd half. I think he really missed Smyth not playing in front of him today! Satio was very poor today.

Ashby. on 23:42 - Jan 11 with 559 views | ingeminate | Not his day by today, but he’s been much better recently. Not first choice, but at champ level when Dunne needs to play in the middle he’s OK. Pile on is overkill, he works hard, hasn’t given it billy big bollocks. He just had a bad game against a better team - and not the only on!

Ashby. on 23:51 - Jan 11 with 534 views | Hunterhoop | My suspicion with Ashby, and I’ve said this to those around me in the Pu, is that in a few years time he’ll be playing League 2/Conference. I think he might be one of these players who has been made to look a lot better than he is playing in academies of good clubs with lots of good players around him. As you peel back those good players, level by level, I think he’ll be found out. He does some batsh*t crazy stuff. He has stopped when he thought the ball was out, when it wasn’t. He has caught the ball in play because he thought it hit the Ellerslie Rd roof. He plays some very risky passes at times. He sold himself at Watford with no one at home behind him. He just looks like he’s playing at a level well above his own. [Post edited 12 Jan 0:04]

He's also taken a few air kicks when trying to clear that almost resulted in goals conceded but for the alertness of Nardi. He thinks it's a good idea take on forwards in his own defensive third. This plus the points you raised belies a lack of a footballing brain. Someone needs to get a hold of him to discuss his general decision making and coach him to keep it simple and stay in his lane.

Yes like simply booting the ball upfield today when we had them rattled and Koli (should have scored) was really giving them fits but he tried to dribble out and we got done badly. I would to have seen Steve Cook letting him have both barrels today after that fcuk up but he is not around to steady the ship. Leicester simply ripped us a new one down his side all day like they had us scouted or something

Agree on all of that. I think he has the physical attributes of a championship footballer but his decision making is horrendous. I think he is at his best, and passable at Championship level, when doing the very basics of one twos in build up phases and using his pace to offer an option as an overlap. But I can barely think of a single good cross from him or ever really locking down an opposition winger. When he has played at left back, he has this horrible habit of taking a really heavy touch infield to try and beat his opposition winger. But he does it without any real awareness of what's around him, how congested the midfield is or where teammates are. Feels indicative of a player who doesn't trust his weaker foot, doesn't look up or have a good positional/tactical sense and uses his pace as a crutch. I think both sides of the debate are kinda right. I think he's markedly better than Santos (more damning of poor Hevertton) and has contriubted as part of a side on a good run in the last dozen games. But I also think it's an unimaginative signing and just a waste of money to develop a player who isn't particularly good, likeable or going to be here in 5 months.

Ashby. on 17:12 - Jan 11 by stainrods_elbow | I think Saito deserves almost as much flak as Ashby today. True, he didn't directly give away any goals, but (i) offered him no protection and (ii) did next to nada going forwards. |
Saito doesn't fancy it away from LR for me He has hardly pulled up any trees at home either - but he is a bit of a nuisance sub... if we to make need to make one late on.Personally don't think we should make his move permanent.

Ashby. on 18:56 - Jan 11 by StreathamRanger | Interesting that this horror show coincides with Saito playing in front of him rather than Smyth and Paal's recent improvement coincides with Chair coming back into the side. Saito gets a pass from everyone because he's a lovely happy chap but he's not great at supporting his full back defensively and is also not first choice material if both Chair and Smyth are fit. |
This. As bad as Ashby was, this game highlighted the issues we had early season with the forward wide players abdicating all defensive responsibilities. No coincidence that our RBs look better with Smyth there and the difference in lil' Kenny when Chair is playing in front of him is stark. Maybe Saito isn't all that? (Although it is clear that Ashby isn't all that either...).

Ashby. on 07:29 - Jan 12 with 148 views | Lblock | I’ll give you the one incident that sums up just how shite Gashby is for me. After he’s basically assisted Leicester to THREE goals. He’s standing wide right unmarked in their half. Acres of space and no pressure. The ball is passed out to him from centre midfield along the ground on a pitch that is a carpet and, don’t forget, he’s in their half with no pressure. Somehow he contrives to not simply trap the ball on the pitch, under no pressure, but lets it run out for a Leicester throw in. Ladies and Gentlemen of the jury; THAT was simply the very last straw and he either needs sending back or being wrapped in gaffer tape and kept in the boot of Nourry’s car. Total and utter crumbly dog shite

Ashby. on 07:53 - Jan 12 with 14 views | Gus_iom | He's alright, he's cover for Dunne and is probably playing more then we imagined because of our travails in the centre. He had a shocker today, he should have been hooked, he looked crushed after conceding the penalty. But I think those questioning his commitment are wrong. He always gets stuck in, always gets involved, throws himself in front of shots and into tackles. We've seen loan players who couldn't give a flying one, and he's nothing like. To compare him to Laird or Roberts is out of order, imho. Both of those, having that game, would have sat down and gone off injured. We've been really short of bodies this season due to injuries, he's always made himself available.
