This will be a serious test for us to overcome on Wednesday. Solihull are much improved from the team we thrashed earlier in the season. It's not a situation where we can hope to score the odd goal and ride it out as we are inclined to do. Outside of the top seven they are the team to be most wary of. Their ability to score goals marks them out as a very dangerous outfit.They are capable of punishing you as several teams have found to their cost. I hope we are at our best, take our chances and don't settle back if we score. Hanging on to a one goal lead will not work with these as Carlisle discovered yesterday. Buckle up, I think it could be a tricky one, the first of many over the next few weeks.

Four league wins out of five since the work on the new pitch started. I think we would have taken that, we've come out of a very difficult situation relatively unscathed. Now the dynamics change and the onus is on us as the home team to set the tempo and take the game to our opponents. When the big games come around at home we invariably don't win them and last season we were tactically out manouvered, that needs to change now and it's all about winning, not drawing if we are to finish top of the pile. Bravery is called for from the first minute of the game, it's down to us to impose our game on the opposition, Hartlepool did a job on us and caught us cold, we can't let that happen again. .Let's not die wondering and play every game with tempo and passion. Let's simplify our game and not try to turn it into a tactical masterpiece, worrying more about our opponents rather than concentrating on our strengths.
When was the last time we won a big game at home against rival clubs? I can't remember. I think McNulty is a defensive coach and he's good at it, playing away from home suits his style of play. I now want to see if he can switch and come up with a plan to win these upcoming home games, we've already beat FGR/ BW/ Carlisle so there's no reason why we shouldn't feel confident of doing it again. It's not just down to McNulty though, Done and Taylor's input is also important. If we have a good February we will be well placed to win the league and we've been excellent at home this season so it's in our own hands now.

Agree, seems to have been a dearth of 'big' home wins under Jim. Agree also that to finish top of the pile, these are the ones the team needs to win - like Wrexham did versus Notts County when they were in this league.
That said this team seems very confident, even to the last minute yesterday, of getting the full spoils, and from an away perspective, have won the big games, York aside. Certainly we're a differennt animal to seasons gone by.
And fantastic that we've a brand new carpet in January to play on - something teams of the past would have killed for!!
It does seem we've escaped having a rotten pitch relatively unscathed in terms of results, though lost Mani D and Becks in part due to it.

Yes we've certainly not got a great record under Jim in big games at home. In terms of promotion contenders you can only really gauge this season and last. We beat Gateshead and Altrincham at home last season but they were both struggling for form and dropping out of play off contention at the time. This season at home (and Accrington) the highest 2 teams we've played are Halifax and Hartlepool and we lost them both. York in the F.A.Cup and Southend the abandoned game. These next 5 weeks that will have to change if we are to challenge York.

You're not being unfair
I've been saying all along that the last remaining doubt about JM's management is the big home game approach. You've highlighted the examples, and the Halifax defeat can be added as one of our derby games with additional fans turning up in expectation... that's something JM has played down but now it's imperative to change that tune
He and his assistants have got so much right; our standing in the table, poised to resume leadership with our games in hand. Well, here they come
Everyone is willing him and this team on. He's got the pitch, he's got the full backing of the club owners, the players have responded to him and know what they have to do. No-one's expecting us to win every game, but the approach is crucial. Don't kill the crowd. Give returning fans something to get behind from the kickoff, show us you believe you're the best team in the league and deserve to be labelled Champions
I posted the other day, in response to a jittery OP about Solihull's recent form, that it's the opposition who should be shitting themselves. Looks like Solihull did just that. Let's give that message to everyone who turns up at the newly-carpeted COA
After Saturday we play Southend, BW, Carlisle, FGR & Scunthorpe at home. I would be amazed if we win them all and we need to stay calm if and when points are dropped. We are in a great position, with games in hand, we don’t need to win every game against the top teams to win the league. Everyone will drop points.

What a strange game that was. I respect Millington’s book of work, but was surprised that given they sat 10th, we’re in decent form and in little fear of relegation, that they didn’t give it a go. The commentators refrain was no pressure on the ball. At least that result in less physical effort required by us. Although we did at least press them. We find ways to win and we did so again last night. The most games won and the least games played. Last night was demonstration of why that is. TVOS may correct me but that is now three opportunities to do the double over a team and three executed. It’s doesn’t sit comfortably with most Dale fans but we are the team to beat in this league, not York. Should neither Southend or FGR beat us at home I think they are both out of the running for automatic promotion. Beat Boring Wood, Scunthorpe and Carlisle would make us really difficult to catch. I’m getting a bit giddy now (one game at a time and all that). Thought Perry looked to have settled well last night. He will do a job for us. I do watch the BJ interviews, yesterday he used the word bravery 5 times in a six minute interview. Steady on Jim it’s only football. UTD

Anybody with Morecambe left to play should be more afraid than playing the top six, as their squad is better than Dale’s according to Solihull manager.

Would agree with most of that. Last season we were going for the playoffs, we took points off the teams who had similar aims. In Oct 24 we beat Halifax at home in a closely contested game and they were an immediate rival for a top seven spot. This time around we played them in October again and lost in another closely contested game. This time around we brush off defeats and get back to winning.
Last night we stuck to our game plan, kept the ball as best we could at the back whilst looking for openings. It might have been conditions and how Solihull played but we weren’t as effective as we can be. But they all believed in how they want to play. It won’t change now. The difference is the mentality is such that they believe they will get a goal and they won’t deviate away from the game plan to achieve that.

The very point i made, and needs to happen more. First-time crosses before the defence is settled can't be anything other than the best opportunity to score (a Dale player being in the box, obviously)

Total football is great, weaving wonderful patterns and stringing twenty passes together in order to invade the oppositions penalty box sounds fantastic. It all falls down though when you have professional footballers who can't hit a cows arse with a banjo. I'm getting fed up of watching gilt edged chances being wasted by our forward players...McBride is the biggest culprit. He doesn't even hit the targer with the goal in front of him. Carlisle away was ridiculous, he should have had a hat trick and his effort at Solihull on Wednesday was embarrassing. It's something McNulty and his coaches need to sort out because our lack of a killer instinct in the final third wastes all the good work in the build up. Most of the time we aren't even working the goalkeeper. I still think we are lacking quality in the final third, i've thought that since the start of the seaaon. Billy Waters has returned to Oldham and would be available on loan, i think he's do a good job for us, playing in a decent team he'll score goals and he's quick.
