That tells me Stephan wants to stick with Cook and Dunne at centre half, and that’s why Edwards hadn’t played yet. Might intimate wasn’t that fussed about signing him, but let’s park that. Great win. You have to hand it to Steve Cook. I know he’s playing for a last contract somewhere, but he’s been very good for quite a few games now. He’s played himself into Stephan’s first choice centre half pairing, hasn’t he? Sounds like Madsen’s rebirth continues apace. Like you, one of his biggest critics last season, but what a turnaround. Fair play to him. Sounds like he was superb again. Kone’s return to form is the most important thing all round though. For the run in, for his value, for the rest of the side. |
I would not necessarily read it that way, but Cook has been his best form for the last 18 months in the last 5 or 6 games, as has Dunne at centre back. Would be very hard to justify dropping either at the moment.

Cook is sixth for us in terms of minutes played this season, and should soon overtake Burrell to go fifth: https://fbref.com/en/squads/a7 Logically Cook should be in contention for a contract extension for us if he can still hold down a place in the side. But at 34 I'm thinking that's probably not going to happen.

If he took a big reduction, why not? Has to be a big reduction, no doubt. But if he was amenable to that, what’s the downside?

His age and lack of pace would be the potential downsides. But I was also thinking about how grumpy Nourry was when Cook exercised his one year extension. Maybe it was just the wages Cook is on this season that upset Nourry. If Cook was willing to take a big reduction and JS still wanted him then maybe a deal could be done. But where would that leave Edwards, Morrison and all the other young CB's we've been racking and stacking?

I mean we'll not know until Marti's autobiography many years hence but I think MC continually playing Cook to trigger the extension might have been the final nail in the coffin of their relationship.

Obviously not the result v Wrexham but that was a freak situation though one we contributed to - other than the last 2 mins overall I thought we were good value for the win Today’s game, couldn’t be happier, result was what the performance deserved. Thrilled for the players because you can see the effort and today we put together some great passages of play, scoring from two of them. Madsen I hope will go on a scoring run which is the only thing he has been lacking recently - superb again. No dud performances. Like Vale at 10 a lot, give him more games there and he’ll grow into the role even better. He has technique and vision that serves him and us well in that spot. Bennie is young and learning, some encouraging signs were positioning / pace / physicality, some things to work on snatching at chances when he had more time, making decisions more quickly, and of course marking for their goal. But he had an integral part in both goals: his nice ball inside to Vale who then released Madsen for the first, and his run into the box to meet Vale’s cross that forced their keeper to intervene. As an aside, seen a few comments about moaning at players etc. I was at Arsenal Man Utd last week (for work!) and I was astonished at how negative the Arsenal crowd were. If they took more than 3 seconds to take a throw in the crowd were on their back. Absolutely mad - horrible atmosphere to play in for the players if you ask me. Get behind your team, come on the message boards to moan if you must!!

Solid performances all over the park from those in Hoops. I guess it will go to Madsen ( a goal and an assist) or Kone. It wasnt just the latter's goal but the 1st half header and came out on top of a physical battle with Thomas and Kitching. Vale had a hand in both goals and laid on a chance for Bennie. Big shout out from me to RND, who was really impressive, both in defence and attack. The only disappointment was Bennie. Rushed when he had 3 chances to score, especially the header, which should have been a Kolli type volley. He also lost his man for their goal. Very naive. Body shape all wrong, allowing attacker to spin off into yards of space. I suspect JS will be going through the video with him.

I don’t know if that’s down to Hayden or his own form (he hasn’t been in the team recently), but apart from the early header he hardly threatened us, which made a nice change.

Again that’s too harsh on Bennie. The lad grew into the game and contributed all the time he was on the pitch: whilst others were tiring he still had the energy to keep going to the final whistle. Yes he lost his man for their goal which is a learning experience for a young player with so few first team minutes. His chance he scuffed was a difficult one but it was great to see him in such a dangerous position in their box which he did a number of times throughout the game including when we scored the winner. Showed why Stéphan clearly rates him and why he deserves to be in the squad. Overall very promising and certainly not a disappointment.

Yes, this is why we must go for it. Next season can wait, there's an opportunity right in front of us - the standard this season is very average. Incredibly, if we'd held on against Wrexham, we would be in sixth place! Charlton and Blackburn are both winnable games and by mid-February, injured players will start to come back. Perhaps look at Smyth for the goal, or RND, neither of whom stopped the cross. I think Bennie looks good. Will definitely be in the 1st team squad next season. |
Ok, here’s another. Look at Wrexhams equaliser. Bennie and either Field/RND follow the same man to the far end of our 6yd box 12 yds from where the ball actually landed on Walsh’s fist. The player they left free scored the goal. He couldn’t believe his luck. I’m not here to slag him, I actually thought he did alright with the shot across goal, poor angle etc. but I don’t think he is good enough to pull the shirt on yet. He obviously trains well etc, but I still don’t know what he is, apart from trying to make himself busy. It’s criminal that he gets to be on there instead of Kolli, who also works hard. He’d have got us up the pitch more and stretched them later in the game

Agree with this re Bennie. I'm not sure what people are expecting of him, he's a 19 year-old who'd only played a handful of games in the A League before we signed him a and has spent his time with us on the bench and playing odd minutes here and there in a variety of positions. Of course he's not the finished article, of course he's going to make mistakes, but he's also shown positive signs. The guy wants to play, he wants to get involved, and he backs himself - I like those traits in a young player.

We won yesterday with Bennie as the early sub not Kolli so Stéphan made the correct decision: it was hardly ‘criminal’ that Kolli (our only striker on the bench and therefore needed to replace Kone if needed) didn’t come on to replace our injured right winger.

Kolli can play wide and we all know it. If we’d lost 1-0 yesterday because of that lapse of concentration most of you would be carving him up for lunch, as you do when we lose and are looking for a scape goat. I prefer not to do that, but personally wouldn’t have him in the firing line in the first place. Bar the lapse yesterday he did nothing wrong, my issue is you have to think long and hard to remember what he did right every time he plays. Broke well for the shot, but I don’t know how to fill the other hour

And blooming good if he did do that. Cook has been very good as usual. He adds a but if experience and know how to the defence, as well as frequently putting his body on the line. And to think that many people thought his foot injury would restrict him to a few games this season. As for upsetting Nourry by selecting Cook, it was a far better decision than giving Jake Glass Salter a new contract just because he managed to stay fit for 2/3 of a season for only the 2nd time in his career. He is being paid a decent wage to spend time in the fitness/rehabilitation suite rather than on the pitch. I know which player I would rather have in the squad.

I was being hyper critical. The fact that he had 3 chances to score was good. The last one wasn't far from nestling in the bottom corner. But he did let Eccles.go for their goal. Part of the learning experience and I trust JS to show him what he missed in the build up.

I agree , the comments on Bennie were harsh,. He is learning to play against men rather than boys in the DS matches. Bennie should have been sent out on loan to a team like Leyton Orient or Wimbledon for the first half of the season. Now, he is going to have to learn the hard way, but I think he will get better. He is already getting into those scoring positions like yesterday and at Oxford.

Not sure why it’s worth getting upset that Bennie came on instead of Kolli and did alright and we won. And it seems like you are making Bennie a bit of a scapegoat when none were needed after we beat the league leaders and all the players did well.
