Played really well, made them look poor. First half Kolli best player on the pitch and for the first time him and Kone looked like a partnership. Hope he’s not injured was stretching his calf at the end of the first half.
Varanes best game of the season, Morgan doing well in Midfield but shattered in the last 5 which did not help. Team as a whole excellent, Smyth following his best performance for the club v pompey with an even better one today.
Only minor disappointments, conceding a deflected free kick which was never in million years a free kick. Saito very poor again after replacing Smyth. And the Ref putting in the worst ref performance of the season so far by quite some distance. It looks like we have a new one lads! |

Yes, because playing Saito was increasingly like playing with a handicap given the amount of times he was giving the ball away and also doing nothing going forward. Then add in Kolli’s genuine quality. And it’s a big swing to the positive and difference. Smyth also wasn’t in the side and has been playing well and contributed a lot in recent games. |  | | |

I don't think its any one thing, I think its a confluence of several.
No1: Smyth instead of Saito on the left
No2: Consistent minutes from Kolli allowing Partnership with Kone to begin to evolve
No3: Morgan in the Madsen role. More time on the pitch and his consistency improving
No4: Vale consistent minutes on the right rather than as a 10 with limited options on the wings.
No5: Edwards to left centre half, great synergistic partnership with Jimmy
No6: Varane beginning to get his mojo back [Post edited 4 Apr 6:42]

I agree with all of that but the other thing is they have clearly had time on the training pitch to work through playing together in particular situations e.g. the obviously drilled first goal that Stephan talks about in his interview that worked once and very nearly twice.
And one more aspect is they didn’t look dog tired. Even the ones who’d been on international duty hadn’t been flogged to death so there was a spring in their steps. Kone in particular, Smyth, Vale and Dunne all looked like they had bags of energy to burn.
It’s a lot of incremental differences all over the pitch, in a number of aspects that together make a huge difference especially with a generally less experienced team. Whereas you can maybe send out 26-28 year old players and they’ll have the nous to play to their strengths, when you have 20 year olds playing they maybe need to be told when to pass forward, when to hoof the ball out, when not to leave a massive gap behind them, when to shoot and when to pass etc.
I’m delighted we can have so many players under 25 playing with so much confidence and often assuredmess. They’re learning fast and seemingly JS is a good teacher. Watford have some decent players - Louza has been named by some vloggers as one of the midfielders of the season- and apart from the last ten minutes we made them look pretty ordinary. |  | | |

It’s 100% fine to say a player is struggling with form, without calling them lazy or crap or L1.
And in Saito’s case, we all know he’s seemingly a great guy, always tries and gives everything. The fact his form is not where he or we would want it is a fair comment, and when it comes back we should celebrate that. | | | |
