| Petroleum…. on 17:10 - Apr 2 with 1844 views | Beckenhamhoop | Just heard a bit of Trumps speech from earlier today. One throw away line was, I thought, very telling. He said if the Straights of Hormuz stay shut ‘buy oil and gas from us’. I’m not sure it’s in the US’s interests to open up the straights which is why he’s passed the baton to Europe to do some dirty work. Having reportedly gained access to Venezuela’s huge oil reserves after deposing Maduro, the Americans won’t be as affected by distribution issues in the ME. As an avowed anti globalist (unless the world is buying from the US) this all fits in with his America first objective. He can put up the price of the energy we currently import from the US and make more money for his economy. IMHO this is going to hit us harder than anyone can currently imagine. | |

| Petroleum…. on 16:44 - Apr 2 by Lblock | So why don't you get rid of your car? |
Because my father lives in Cornwall and is terminally ill. So I travel down at both planned and unplanned moments to be with him and where he lives there are 3 buses a day or something. He also doesn't have a car (can't drive now anyway). My missus doesn't have a car either so between us we use it when we have to. I have thought of selling it but at the moment it is a useful thing to have. I just never use it if I am going somewhere local. I am not against having a car, for some people it is fairly essential and I am sure a lot of journeys made are unavoidable unless you can walk for hours or have a very good public transport connection for where you need to go. I just think there appears to be a large number of people driving on the roads (at least in London) who take trips based on pure laziness, status or snobbery of public transport. Then complain when they are stuck in traffic. And this new trend for some people of having to have a large vehicle is just weird, especially if you live in London with tight roads and traffic jams.

Or the 32 billion cubic meters of gas off the coast of Gaza which bypasses the straight of Hormuz for Europe and N America. [Post edited 2 Apr 17:23]

It does seem quite blatant what he's doing though, doesn't it? Remove Venezuela's leader, encourage USA oil companies to invest in Venezuela, start war in middle east. Manipulate the markets with often conflicting comments about it being a short war, going to end soon etc then threaten more attacks, deploy ground troops etc. I'm sure he doesn't know anyone making any money out of all this though, I've settled on the conclusion he's probably doing it in the best interests of the American people otherwise they won't elect him again.

Not if the Chinese can’t rely on an oil supply (they haven’t got any of their own) needed to make all the renewable stuff in the manufacturing process. Screwing over the Chinese economy as much as he can is arguably the main point of all this. [Post edited 2 Apr 17:51]

That's not how commodity markets work though. Oil and gas price moves on supply and demand, it is immaterial if you are the producer or consumer. The only control a producer has on the commodity market is to either limit or increase supply. If you stop 20% of the world's oil, there are no levers that can be pulled to mitigate a catastrophic price increase. That's why petrol in the USA is going up and will continue to. You are giving way too much credit to the man baby in the White House. He and his sycophants have managed to create the biggest omnishambles in recent history. And they chose to do it!!

Was reading today thats highly likely to happen by the end of April. Glad I went the Ev route last summer weirdly our night time charging rates gone down to 5.2pfrom 7p yesterday so even cheaper for us to fill the car up . Remember the last time petrol was in short supply driving to various petrol stations at midnight and waiting and hour for half a tank of petrol not fun

We’re not heading for fuel that costs £2 a litre and 10,000 innocent dead because China might invade Taiwan though.

| Petroleum…. on 15:23 - Apr 2 by EuroRanger | I'm not suggesting panic, but this will be bad. Arguing that this is hysteria makes no sense when many more exposed poorer countries are already having to take fairly drastic action (shorter work weeks, reduced speed limits, work from home orders etc.). That's before you get to politicians like Germany's Merz warning that this will be as bad as during Covid (inflation / economy wise) - politicians don't make warnings like that unless they're pretty certain because otherwise you look like an idiot. |
‘I’m not suggesting panic but…’ The scariest bit of this post is that you seem to be under the impression that politicians are not idiots

There's a world of difference between Trump and Merz, even if I don't agree with either. They also have access to briefs that we don't. If they're raising alarm (along with basically everyone in the know about this), I'm not sure the correct response is to say "everything is fine and everyone worried is a headless chicken" like some in this thread have. For reference, I thought everyone was overreacting about COVID in March 2020 and we saw how that played out...

However if you were to invade a country nearby which has an oil industry, suggest your national oil companies invest there and but got a lukewarm reception with it being deemed not really worth it, increasing the price of oil by 25% and causing supply issues from further afield may encourage them to do what you wanted in the first place. The rest of his comments, whether it's about the duration of the war or tariffs etc, seem to be aimed at getting a reaction from the stock market. So somebody will be making money off all of this.
