Wouldn’t have made any difference but that penalty decision was shocking . From loft standing we could see it was the wrong decision. Abysmal refereeing from another ref who doesn’t cut it this level . Not sure what his linos were doing .

The penalty decision was so bad last night I wondered if all the Championship refs had been instructed to give outrageous decisions between now and the end of the season then the FA (or the EFL or what ever the governing body is now called) goes back to the clubs in May and says are you sure you don’t want VAR?
Obviously this isn’t the case but it did cross my mind. |  | | |

In these situations where the mistake from the ref was so obvious, what actually happens? Does he get his wages docked? Does he have to write an apology to the club? I know refs have a hard job anyway, but surely he should hold his hands up on this one. |

I remembered Danny Maddix conceding a late penalty at Anfield, they won the game and the league with it.
Only thing is, the tackle was well outside the box, Danny ripped up the turf in the challenge, he left a fecking marker for the ref.
After the game our manager - Don Howe? - came over to applaud us, and pointed to the missing clump of turf.

Funny enough, I thought about that penalty at Anfield too. The ref I seem to remember was Keith Hackett, in what I think was his final season. Fat and obviously not able to keep up with play, I remember going mental that a free kick had been given because I didn't think it was, and all of a sudden spotting Hackett puffing into view pointing at the spot. I mean, it must have been the thick end of five yards outside the box.
We'd had three seasons on the trot up at Anfield losing to shocking homer decisions from refs. So when we finally one up there (the following year?), it was without doubt my happiest day watching the Rs, certainly away from home. Getting attacked by a scouse granny with her handbag, telling us to "f@ck off back to London" was the icing on the cake  |  | | |

I would have expected the linesman at the other end to have had a say on that one. From my seat it looked a penalty, but you could tell everybody in Q, P and safe standing were upset with it and the lino on the Ellerslie Road side has that view.
It's a useful distraction. Stephan spent two of his five minutes talking about the referee, said he'd never seen a penalty like it in his entire career (come on now). If you thought the referee was the problem last night I think you're kidding yourself.
Of more concern Tylon Smith has now given away two penalties in two Championship outings. Why is he going to ground like that? Stay on your feet. Where's the 'player development' in somebody coming on against Boro, giving away a daft pen, then coming on in his next appearance and doing a similarly daft tackle close to the box? |
More of a problem was the player that didn’t go for the ball that led to that break - think it was Vale - just as guilty in my view as Smith.Thought both Vale and Morgan shied away from the physical side of the game yesterday. Midfield didn’t turn up yesterday. |  |

I thought he tried to tackle with the wrong leg. If he was going to commit, he should have slid and tackled with his right. Maybe coaching has changed since I stopped playing. | | | |

Swansea looked good to me, that Ronald on the right wing gave RND a terrible time. Good player that Ronald. Swansea looked shape and really good.
However, when we went long, they struggled so, the long ball teams will have them under the cosh. Thats what we should have done from the start go long and then they start to fold, which is why we got the goal, but we only did that in the last 10 mins. Too late by then.
Swansea could be a dark horse next season, I was impresed with them, the ooposite of watching Oxford. |  |

I was genuinely pleased about it.
Once in a Blue Moon you're always going to get historically awful decisions like this - they come around. The knack is to have them in games which are utterly irrelevant and that was the case for us.
Imagine if that had been a play-off semi-final next season? Or a relegation six pointer (perish such a thought)?
No harm done, and the incident (imho) in no way affected the outcome - we'd have lost anyway and deserved to.
I'd say the decision, in reality, was the very least of our worries last night. |
