3-5-2 *might* be good use of Mbengue/Dunne/Edwards, JCS. A system none have played, though, so it's fantasy football really: it's guess work, dream fulfilment.
It would necessitate buying the hardest players to hire, competent wing backs, because no matter how much we wish that Smyth (28, never really played full back or wing back) or Esq/Larkeche are Championship-level wing backs, they really aren't.
But most problematically it would be a disaster for Chair, Dembele, Saito, Poku, possibly Vale, all of whom QPR have invested very heavily in.
It would necessitate a huge churn of players this summer or at least in a panic in Jan. It would say very loudly QPR are not serious people. And serious Championship teams, let's call them Millwall, Boro, Wrexham, Derby, would take one look at that back three in front of Walsh with Smyth and Larkeche in oceans of space behind and in front, and cry 'hallelujah!'
QPR need maybe three or four really good signings: two full backs, a goalie, a CM (maybe two CMs). Get those right and the team is serious. Change the system instead, and they're jokers. [Post edited 29 May 9:54]

The big thing is, Kone and Burrell are clearly the golden eggs now. The Anytime Notebook is a podcast about betting in the EFL and they note that when looking for an antepost bet for top scorer in the championship you want someone who's stepped up, scored a few this year and kicks on next

We absolutely need to maximise their seasons because a) if they score loads we can coin it on them b) if they've scored loads of goals we should've had a big season
So 2 in our formation really isn't that negotiable.
The problem remains our midfield though as you correctly outline.
Defence is easily sorted with a left and right back and I'd have those as number one priorities - left back specifically as I think Mbenge could work out.
But our midfielders and wide players have all been bought for a 433/4231 and we're not going to be playing that. And it's caused some weird effects - at the end of last season if I'd gone back in time and told myself Madsen would be POTY playing in a 442 I'd have presumed I'd accidentally ingested acid. But it also amplifies the worst of Varane for eg. Similar with our wingers. And we're not in a position where we can really take hits or outlay more for replacements. |  | | |

I think we could sell either Burrell or Kone this summer. Not that I want to. But as you say, "golden eggs". I think Kone will improve and could be a division breakout next year. And if I think that, I imagine most Championship teams are probably far ahead of me down that road.
For example, Boro excelled in every department apart from finishing, They create so much, but imagine if they had a Kone or even Burrell. Test us with a £6-7m bid, that's what I'd do if I were them.
So, I wouldn't get too attached to two up front. The squad is screaming out for a 4231 or even, should we manage an upgrade on Varane, a 433. If you went 433, there's a world, a possibly sexy world where we cook on X, with a three of holding-mid/Madsen/Vale behind Kone in 9, narrowly supported by Poku or Chair on side and Burrell coming in and running behind on the other. It could work.
I think the original game model was sensible. We've just never got round to recruiting the really important but boring full back positions adequately. | | | |

Hate to be a pedant (I've probably been around here too long now that you all know that's not true) but Walsh definitely played in the Charlton Home game after Coventry rather than Nardi. I remember because the guy sat in front of me kept making substitution gestures to the bench when Walsh had the ball, which started to come of as vindictive after we'd made all our allowed subs.
So this sentence from the second paragraph on Nardi should read:
"Nardi was then part of some ship steadying through September, winning his first two games back between the sticks (Stoke H, Wrexham A) and going unbeaten in his first five"
Also under Walsh:
It’s a shame really that he got injured when he did, because Julian Stéphan rightly kicked the bloody game model into touch and went more direct the week after against Charlton which would have done Walsh the world of good – Paul Nardi subsequently went unbeaten in his first five league appearances in his stead. - Technically he got to win at Charlton before Nardi went on 5 unbeaten run which like you say was more to do with our change of style than changing goalkeeper but Walsh's stats would look better if he'd have been fit for them. |  | | |

Absolutely agree on the goalkeeper position. Keep Walsh as a number two and bring in an experienced older guy. If he's not happy with that then let him go to find first team football elsewhere.
On current evidence he would not be a major loss. Add those 5-6 points he 'cost us' to that finishing position would put us in contention for play-offs under the new rules.
Changing goalkeepers - an obvious spot as an easy win, surely?
A lot of posters went early with their thanks but I knew that these articles / podcasts were coming and they are always some of my favourites of the year. So far, did not disappoint and the forward stuff still to come.

Agree, I think Walsh will be first choice and if not I don't think he'll hang around.
I don't think it helped him with the constant changing of the back line, especially CB, along with throwing him in the deep end. | |

I haven't seen enough of either Cooper or Salomon but the stats indicate and my eyes tell me that Walsh is not (yet?) a championship standard keeper.
If we keep Walsh as No.1, I think we will continue to concede goals that should be prevented.
If he's told he's number 2 and wants to leave, I understand that and would accept it.
Finding two new goalkeepers would be possible and it's a lot easier position to fill than say championship-level forwards - and we even managed to find two of those last summer.
