Well I enjoyed it. Who wants to see France swan about with the game won after half an hour? France got it done but they were rattled. It was always Paraguay’s best hope of getting something. If we get them in the final and won playing like they have nobody will care. | | | |

I really enjoyed that game and Paraguay played like absolute dogs.
They knocked out Germany but did not require to play such a dirty game as they did tonight.
As we have all seen France's front line is outrageously good but tbh until the penalty, they didn't create outstanding chances and Paraguay had a couple of opportunities.
The fact the ref was at the level of a pub league ref on a Sunday in the local park, meant they could push their tactic further and further, but Mbappe in particular outclassed them and laughed at them also, which showed what a complete player he is. You are going to get hacked and constant digs from the opposition to try to knock you off your stride, but most of the French team kept their composure.
And tbh I didn't have any issues with the way Paraguay played. They knew in an ordinary game, they lose 3or 4 to nil.They played the game in the way that gave them the best chance to get through and a pen apart, they could have taken it into extra time and then who knows.
It reminded me of a game to the 70s or 80s, when you could half decapitate the opposition and you didn't even get a caution.
I actually really enjoyed watching it.
One thing though, I dont think I would like to go to Paraguay for my summer holidays. Animal mentality for sure. [Post edited 5 Jul 0:35]

This begins and ends with the Ref and his so called helpers he was a disgrace and should be demoted .Never should have been appointed to this fixture got played by Paraguay all day.
How their No 23 was not sent off or even booked is one of life Mysteries and there were a few others who should have been red carded as well.
France got 3 yellows and Paraguay 1 at the final whistle that tells the story .

They tried to win a game of football, the best chance they had.
And where some of these players backgrounds, they have grown up in slumland cultures where drug barons rule. They dont often go home for a pot of tea and cucumber sandwiches.
Ultimately life is much more brutal.
Personally, thats why some of these match ups, I have greatly enjoyed the different styles. | |

Totally agree about the ref. Incredibly he booked 3 players today after all that s/housing from Paraguay. The problem was the yellow cards were all given to the French players. How did Galarza get away with committing so many goals without so much as a severe talking too?

The problem is they tried to slaughter their way to win a game of football and that is what a lot here disagreed.
Look at Cabo Verde, brought Argentina all the way almost to penalties and scoring 2 wonderful goals to level twice when they were behind. I don’t see them behaving like animals to win the game of football which to most of them was the biggest achievement of their footballing career |  |

I genuinely can't understand anyone praising the Paraguay team or claiming they had a legitimate plan to beat a better opponent. The first half was a bit more creditable as a defensive performance but in the second they realised the ref wasn't going to book them for anything and started assaulting the French players on and off the ball. Meanwhile in the other direction they're diving and playacting - look at the Olise booking where the Paraguayan fouls him, starts getting into him, then hits himself in the face and drops to the ground acting like he's just been shot. If it was Stoke or Preston you'd all be screaming and rightly so. How Paraguay ended up with zero yellows is beyond me, especially when the first one given was to Barcola for being nearby when a Paraguayan fell over. | | | |

The ref in the Paraguay v France game was the worst I have seen in a very, very long time. Outrageously bad. Paraguay were getting away with all sorts and didn't get a single booking.

Just found out that some of my neighbours are Morrocan. |

No French players got injured in this game at all. French players getting slaughtered is a bit of a stretch tbf. The ref was amazingly weak though, so Paraguay continued with the intimidation tactics; they obviously felt it was their best way of progressing.
As Rangers' fans, we all know only too well, the beautiful game is not always possible or effective.
And yes personally much prefer to see skill, class and talent win the day, but as the phrase goes, there can be many ways to skin a cat. Some of them, we won't like, but if we are ultimately successful then the players and managers would endorse however they could to get the job done.
Paraguay played a game they could ultimately feel was their best opportunity. If the ref had clamped down early on it, they could revert to their plan b, which am sure they had. They were less combative in earlier rounds.
Can't see all the pain here.
Seen many worse and dirty teams in the championship, week in week out.
This is a second rate South American team, most of whom would have grown up in slum estates ruled in force by drug cartels and gangland leaders, where people disappear frequently, and they were playing against the sophisticated and talented world cup favourites, in France.
The French ultimately won the day as the intimidation tactics had little effect and they managed to keep going, which was good for them too. [Post edited 5 Jul 13:52]
