What’s becoming evident is, if a British tennis player wants to be at the top of his profession, it’s best to go to the US, Spain, anywhere basically, that hasn’t got the LTA’s finger prints all over it.
Fair play to Fery, missed yesterday, but in earlier rounds I’ve been turning over during the second set, thinking the poor fellas going to be outclassed, turn back over an hour later and somehow he’s taking the fourth set. He’s playing fearless, something we don’t teach very well over here. |
Sorry, Steve downvoted in error because I completely agree with the points you’re making. The LTA’s record in producing tennis players of World Class is peculiarly lacking in success given the untold millions that have been ploughed into it from Wimbledon .
And Fery’s performance has been remarkably free of the tendency to fall apart under pressure that has been so apparent in many of the British players in recent years. Maybe this is something to do with the fact that most of his tennis coaching was in California, similar to Murray, who I believe was coached for a significant period of his development in Spain. |  | | |

I was there yesterday on Court 1 and Zverev totally overpowered Fritz (who is only an inch shorter than him).
So Zverev is 6'6" and Fery is 5'9" - so er, good luck! In theory he hasn't got a chance but then he's got to this point so who knows? Should be a great game. |  |

That's so true. The UK just doesn't produce talented tennis players capable of winning Grand Slams.
Fery and Raducanu may have been born abroad but have been raised in Britain and this is the only country that have called home.
And I don't give a toss what football team they support. There are not many good sports players, musicians or actors who support QPR. Quite frankly QPR have been very poor since the mid 90s and not been able to attract many new fans. | | | |

A bit harsh. He's up against someone who's having a worldie of a match. It is a bit more Titanic than Fery at the moment but he's done well to get to a semi. Which is what I tell myself most days now. [Post edited 10 Jul 15:26]
