Great to get the win there for the first time in twenty something years, and we looked fitter than we have been in recent prior year opening games. Chair looked closer to his best again going forward, though he left his man free to shoot for their goal. M'Bengue was excellent, as was Edwards in 2 different roles to his usual one. Charles made more worrying errors again, he's not convinced me yet. Madsen out with injury again is a big worry, as were the injuries to Kemper and Saito. At times we combined really well moving the ball forward, but we got lucky with our first 2 goals and with the result, hope that continues. [Post edited 16 Aug 10:11]

That chip setting up our first goal was different class. There wasn’t another player on the pitch who would have even thought of that ball, let alone pull it off. |
That one did impress me.it was clever and executed perfectly.
However he wasted a good chance to score in the 2nd half when shooting high and wide from inside the area and then a free kick (I thought Chair was better placed to take it with his right foot).
Overall, he had a decent game against one of the weaker teams in thus division. I don't think or expect him to play in a cm role against the likes of Middlesbrough, West Ham, Wolves, Burnley, Millwall or even Norwich , Sheffield United | | | |

One chip into the box that could have gone anywhere or been cleared hardly qualifies him for a 7.6 rating.
I too thought he was fairly anonymous and that deeper role he seemed to be playing does not suit him or us. He definitely has technical ability, but we saw little of it yesterday.
He is better further up the pitch, but when Madsen is fit and Kamara is up to speed, he needs to be benched imo. |

Well, yeah apart fromthe fact that Illy always has moments like that in EVERY match, but would be slated on here if he did that and nothing else each game.
Vale has a talent and has upped his workrate this season, but he is just not aware of his surroundings sometimes and loses the ball in bad positions on occasion.
He was by no means awful yesterday (none of them were) and that chip was class, but personally not in the top 8 performers yesterday.

A one touch exquisite chip long enough to take the entire defence out, short enough not to tempt the keeper out, a masterpiece of football.
Still, if that’s not to your taste, what about a one touch pass leaving Chair with acres of space and goal to aim at or a one touch pass to Alfie that he could have sat on and ridden into their goal net, unfortunately he made the wrong choice and tried to use one of his feet instead, but I digress.

Vale is quite inexperienced and I think has come a reasonably long way in a short time in terms of fitness and impact. Not close to 100 adult games of football yet let alone games for us and this level. I don’t think he had a particularly good game overall but I don’t think the comparison with Chair who is vastly more experienced, probably on far more money and often a source of frustration as our supposed ‘main man’. It’s fair to expect more of Chair in general who should be at his peak.
Also it’s the first league game. It was far from perfect from most of them and that’s ok. For the first time in a long time I’m excited to see where we are after a dozen games. | | | |
