Just not at the races last night. For a few reasons. Southampton were good, but we were well below our best.
Matos screwed with a stable, proven defence to shoehorn Cabango back in and we paid a price for that. We looked all over the place. Key, Welsh, Lissah and Tymon must start most games going forward now if fit.
Many of the new arrivals need to buck up too. Stephen Welsh thus far is the only one to prove himself a clear and obvious improvement on what we already had. Elijah Just has been a significant downgrade. Early days for all of them of course and it would be foolish to write any of them off after half a dozen games, but we need to see more. From Just especially. There have been hints with the others but absolutely nothing from him.
Otherwise it's players who were already at the club like Eom, Key & Fulton who are carrying us at the moment. |
Agree largely with this, and I thought the same that Just had a shocker...but then FotMob says he created 3 chances the most of any player on the pitch...he just seems like a rabbit caught in headlights and too slow of thought and deed at the moment.
I didn't realise Opoku and Yeo were 21 and 22 respectively so I will cut them a bit more slack. I thought it an odd choice to put the pressure of marking Scienza on Lissah, and it was laid bare that he couldn't handle him - I am not saying Key is a better defender (he is not) but he is quicker than Lissah so may have been able to cover better. |  | | |

We produced very little because we were too slow and not incisive enough in our build up.

The full backs then pick themselves. The rest of the team can be rotated according to form and fitness.
Those three get us moving the ball quickly and with purpose when opposition attacks break down. If you replace any of them for Cabango or any of our deeper midfielders, we gain physicality, but we don’t move it forward quickly enough, opponents get behind the ball and we end up playing Russell Martin style football. Albeit much further up the pitch.
Southampton weren’t at all defensive yesterday, but they often had eight or nine men behind the ball in their own half because we were too slow moving it from our final third to theirs. | | | |

The third goal last night was very avoidable and something that teams executed against us quite a lot last season - let us have the ball up to the edge of their box, leave 3 players wide and high and catch us on the break.
The tactic of pushing everyone up and crowding the last third whilst trying to thread the ball through the eye of a needle and walk it into the net is not that difficult to defend against as keeps getting proved when we do it.
Quick counter breaks, moving the ball forward attacking with pace generally works best in this league, we have shown signs of that this season which has been great to watch and we need to keep working at it as it is very effective. Just my opinion but there was still over 10 minutes left so perhaps we didnt need to over commit at that point in the game....one for the coaches and manager to mull over in their match debrief. | |

Agree that most will need time before any serious judgement is made, but the Fotmob numbers just underline my deep suspicion of most football stats these days. Like you say, he just looks out of his depth at the moment.
Half of our problem defensively was being pulled out of shape. Both Southampton wide men found far too much space and I don't blame the fullbacks specifically for that. The whole defence looked unsettled when previously it had been robust. It was a change we didn't need to make.
Maybe a bit of a reality check overall. We've beaten poor Derby and Watford sides and a middling Stoke. I think we've got the ability to challenge at the top of the table but we need a few tweaks. In the absence of Walta I don't think we've got much choice than to move Eom into the middle when he gets back from Asia. We have to add a bit of guile there. |  |

Yes I think we would have done better but am not necessarily suggesting we would have won the game - nobody will know that for sure. This is just my opinion (if I'm allowed that) but I've never been a huge fan of Ben Cabango. Without doubt both Lissah & Welsh are better footballers than Cabango,more athletic and calmer under pressure. |
Personally think Matos likes Key in more open and attacking games.
Lissah out wide when we play the more adventurous teams.
I think that idea was good.
The issue I saw last night seemed mainly to be a lack of energy off the ball.
Vipotnik looked unfit and slow in first half. Wingers looked devoid of ideas and Eli Just just didn’t want to pass and just ran with the ball every time before eventually losing it.
I feel sad to say it, but Vipotnik is not our most important player in Matos’ favoured way of playing. He doesn’t work hard enough.
Watching Idah and Eom working so hard, with one touch passing and quick flicks, was a million miles from Vipi attempting to do it last night.
I think that Idah was always Matos’ preferred striker, but Vipi’s amazing scoring last season, stopped Matos feeling he was able to drop him to play his favoured side.
I do think most of the team last night was our best.
Defensively we can use Key in the easiest games and Lissah out there against the teams with the tricky wingers of stronger forward line.
Otherwise I just think it’s Estaquio in for Fulton, for our strongest midfield.
Issue is how to get everyone firing like Idah and Eom. We will have some time to see if Yeo/Opoku can work the quick passes with him.

Calling players 'duds' after only a few games is extremely harsh - these are human beings who are finding their feet after moving from various countries and standards of football to play in one of the most competitive leagues in the world. I see players who are getting used to a new team and system with early potential but certainly not duds?
Comparing our wingers to Scienza is not a like for like comparison, he is one of the best in this league and would be a good winger in the prem too.
Perhaps the time to judge these 'duds' is after they have had a few months to acclimatise. |

We see teams exploiting the space allowed them out wide every game , we just need to mark the wide men tighter , if we stop them having the ball then they can’t cross it can they
If our fullbacks push forward then a midfielder has to drop back to cover the space
We’ve got a great squad ,Matos just needs to tweak his tactics to make us tighter ,defensively out wide

As has been said our defence was pull out of shape but was that because in our effort to press the ball. Teams leave a number of midfield players high up the pitch against us between the winger and centre forward,if the full back comes in to mark them they leave the winger space if they go out then it is the midfielder who is spare. Two centrehalves marking one centre forward, our holding midfielder sitting in between or just in front of our two centrehalves, either way their midfielder running the channel is free to recieve the ball and has the time to pick his next move. Players weren't being marked or chased down properly ended up players chasing shadows, we have seen it often under various managers not so much under Matos, is it a case that new players when they come to the club look to play the one touch football but once they get in their mind established they start holding onto the ball too long Just and Yeo runs in the wrong places come to mind but that is not just confined to inexperienced player Tymon for example and Cabango both making rash decisions that had been reduced to a minimum of late , all players make mistakes but too many yesterday trying too hard in my opinion not keeping things simple, a bit of composure to assess the game at the time and act accordingly. Vipotnik wasn't used much pre season, injury, transfer pressure or a bit off both. The lack of a proper pre season is showing. Hopefully he can get up to speed and get back to last seasons form. Last night's goal will help with his confidence another from open play and he should be rolling again and not over think his play. |  | | |

It was a phantom injury, he wasnt played because there was several suitors.
He only started to play when it was clear that we werent going to get anywhere near what we wanted.
This episode has put the poor boy back a month, he will get going, hopefully last noghts goal, even though a penalty, could kick start him. |  | | |

Not sure that Wrexham were unlucky not to win , they had one shot on target ,we had 3 , it may seem that way but they really didn't do anything but nullify our attack . | |
