JS said he will be reassessed in the International break, not that he will be back at the end of it.

Sounds like our medical team still don’t know how to properly diagnose an injury - I fear it’ll be one of those where we get a couple of updates and it goes quiet until he finally returns in March

This - absolutely - but to clarify, March 2027?

Some of them do look fitter but we still have 5/6 players who can't play for more than an hour and can't do 2 games in a row plus have several missing altogether.

And whenever Lamptey comes on, he looks fitter and faster than everyone bar Burrell, even with a long term injury.

I get that you don’t want to push it with more minutes on the pitch but the comparison is quite stark. If we can get him close to 100% fit, the gap will widen further.

Those possessed by devils, try and keep them under control a bit, can't you ?

That's how ridic it's getting at our club. One of the team's best players goes down with nobody around him during the first half of a game after being rested during the week, after three separate injuries the previous year, and we're delighted it's only another month.

If it's a calf injury and a tear then depending how bad it is it will be a month out at an absolute minimum.

And just to add, while it's annoying and a big shame, we do have the squad strength in-depth this season that we shouldn't miss him too much.

Unless of course everyone else starts dropping like flies...

You’re surprised that Lamptey, Kamara and Cirkin cant do 90 minutes yet?

Yeah. Obviously Chair has been hugely important for us for years, and I still think he can be one of our most important players. But we're always saying we have an army of midget tens, so I guess this is one area of the pitch we do have some options.

Hopefully Vale can step up. I know many on here don't rate him, but if he _could_ make this a break out season, I could see it being in a central position in front of CM.

Chair has started the season very well. looked very fit indeed.......I wonder what the 'rest' posters think when Chair was 'rested' against Cardiff!!!

So hopefully that means he just misses the next 3 games and is back in a month for West Ham.
I doubt that though to be honest. There's 7 games between the two international breaks this year and I'd wager we don't really see him back until Millwall away on November 21st

Or Madsen and Burrell can’t do three or four ninety minute matches in a row. I just can’t get why anyone thinks that’s sensible, I really can’t, after last season’s injury problems. I get why everyone would like them to play every game - so would I - but if we overplay them and they break down it affects us over several months not just a couple of games. Or even if we start them too often in the more intense and physical early stages of most matches is that sensible either?

It also may make players thinking about coming to us to rebuild their careers after injury less likely to come. I’m sure we were able to point to RND as a player who we looked after last season and he was able to play a substantial number of games after a horrific injury record previously; ironic given our overall injury situation last season.

No I get those not being able to do 90 mins, Madsen, Varane, Poku and Kone all not being able to do 90 or back to back games still is a bit of a concern though when you also have JCS who needs to be wrapped in cotton wool and Mbengue struggling with cramp every week.

This isn't just a QPR problem, it is a football problem. We just seem to get hit badly because we're unfortunate for it to have affected our most influential players over the last two years.

in simple terms:
Football as a sport is anterior chain dominant. That means during actual play and pitch/ball training the quads, hip flexors, abs etc get more work, than the posterior chain (calves, hamstrings, glutes, lower back etc).

To offset that more gym strength and endurance work needs to be performed for the posterior chain. During fixture congestion this gym work reduces to prevent delayed onset muscle soreness impacting on performance. physios attempt to prescribe micro dosing work during these periods, but it is not as effective. Also during match schedules, players do less actual sprint training ( fast acceleration/deceleration), which means that despite matches they also become deconditioned to the forces required in short bursts.

Over the last two decades, as match intensity has increased, and playing schedules have become more condensed and congested, it is no surprise that calf and hamstrings injuries have doubled in elite football players, mostly due to inadequate conditioning and imbalance between the anterior and posterior chain.

This is why there is the need for squad depth and rotation to support the conditioning cycles during a season.

Also as is mentioned further up on the thread, once you have had a tear, even if the tear itself fully mends, and muscle strength and conditioning is back to 100%, scar tissue will have been generated. This scar tissue itself is not flexible and under excess violent force causes stress where the scar tissue anchors onto the flexible muscle fibres which increases the chance of a new tear. There are loading mechanisms to remodel the scar tissue to effectively remodel it along the lines of muscle action which will reduce the risk as well as lengthen and strengthen the muscle, change type of collagen in the scar tissue, and other aspects that can move the muscle back to almost complete recovery, unfortunately this processes take much much longer(3 to 12 months) than the 'clinical' recovery from the tear(3 to 6 weeks), which is why there's such a massive recurrence of such injuries in football players due to returning to play far quicker than the remodelling takes.

I couldn't agree with you more, than if I lay on the treatment table before you and said, 'figure this mess out', Only for you to return with a pistol and encourage me to, 'save yourself the bother!'

100% football is stretching the elastic band of human capacity. Look at what Rodri said a while back, before succumbing to a season ender a week later.

We need less, not mote football, football, football. Football will eat itself!

Same old QPR

The phrase used alot by pundits this season "if QPR can keep everyone fit" and its already looking like we wont as Kone is out too shame as Chair looked really sharp during pre season.

Im off to scream into a pillow.

Poku had multiple recurring injuries last season and Madsen picked up a bad one after being overused which kept him out for most of the spring and which is still conditioning back to full fitness. Them playing restricted minutes isn't "concerning," it's the club correctly looking at some of its best assets and deciding that they prefer 46 appearances of 60-70 minutes than 20 appearances of 90 minutes.

Kone played half of last season with an obvious knee injury and likely should have had more done about it over the summer. Whether he chose not to or the club did is something we don't know.

Varane isn't injured or even noticeably unfit, he just isn't being picked presumably because Stephan doesn't rate him.

I really don't get why so many people seem to think that players coming back off serious injuries should immediately be jumping back into playing 90 minutes multiple times per week. I promise you that pushing them to do too much too soon is only going to get us fewer minutes and less value out of them overall than managing their bodies to let them heal properly.

As a side note on JCS, nobody seems to remember him having hip surgery last season which Nourry said was meant to address the recurring issue he had which kept taking him out of action. He's played in every game so far and done 3 lots of 90 minutes, a brief sub apperance against Cardiff, and the first 67 against Boro. Maybe he goes down in a heap again tonight and misses the rest of the season, but it's promising that he is back to regularly playing again.

Probably onto something there.
I wonder if Kone could have had a procedure on his knee off season, but he or the club thought he might get sold and decided not to?

I think with Varane and Kolli we could even be in the Nardi territory where the player doesn't have long on their contract and the club won't select them.
Although I'm sure both signed new deals recently, so that's probably nonsense...

can see your ngle but if that was the case hes unlikely to have passed a medical allowing him to leave so its a daft angle by the club anyway , austin failed a medical once due them saying his knees were fecked did ok for us though that season. does go back to the fabled miedical tream not doing the right sort of work on his knee to stop it flaring up as much as it seemes to have done

kolli is a diff story hes never managed to last longer than 60 mins thats not down to inury just bad fitness level from the start apart, from i think the plymouth tiny tots game in the cup when i think he did do the full game

Yeah, my guess would be that it was something like he could have a knee op that was guaranteed to take him out for three months, or he could try rest and physio and be back playing for the start of the season, and he chose option B and now we're paying for it. No idea if that's true, just a possibility.

With Varane I think the club just didn't get offers they thought were worth it and figured they'd potentially get better ones in Jan or next summer. Unfortunately for him the manager rates other players better in his position and there isn't the same pressure from the club to play him as a development/sale prospect because you can make the same argument about Madsen/Vale/Edwards, and Kamara they've brought in on loan and clearly are very keen to see playing too.

For me having half the first team unable to play a full game is a bit concerning, I get the reasons for it and maybe it will get better but feel like i've seen this before.

On Varane, Stephan said in pre season he was coming back from injury and was having his minutes managed, I'm guessing thats still the case.

you'd think so, my only concern is the number of players we're having to do this with, i hope that comes down but feels like we have to make 4/5 changes per game and then make 4 subs after an hour. Can get away with that at the moment as not playing very good sides but that will change.

Yes I get that. But there’s a difference between I’m managing their minutes because they’re coming back from injury or because they’re physically unable to ever play three games in a week and they’re crocks who are likely to break down for most of the season.

I know we’ve been through the Luke Amos, JCS, Johansen scenarios enough times to be wary. What I don’t get is the view that managing their minutes is inherently wrong. It’s fair enough to consider that we’ve got a few crocks and be irritated by it but that’s a different story. That’s to do with recruitment not fitness and conditioning. The argument there is whether the risk/reward is there to have Lamptey for thirty matches a season or AN Other player who’s undoubtedly not as good for potentially forty matches. And it’s a fair argument but doesn’t mean the fitness team or Stephan are wrong with their selection decisions for those players.
