I think the Adel type flair player, where it is a case of just waiting to be given the ball and then doing your stuff is probably dying out. Players are now being asked to do more off the ball than before and have to work harder off the ball. |  | | |

Are they dead? Arguably as much skill in the game as ever. Isn't it just that being skilful no longer gives you a get out of jail card when it comes to hard work? Ronaldo (obvs setting the bar hugely high mentioning him) showed that it was poss to combine skill and hard yards. Probably heresy to say it but when I see grainy footage of Stan etc I often think some of the goals etc are not all that great. Totally get he was getting hacked to death, playing on mud-baths, not getting the fitness training and diets of modern players etc etc, so of course incredibly hard to compare. Perhaps what is dying out are mavericks, who often did have great flair but perhaps that is a slightly different beast? | | | |

There's still quite a bit of flair through our team - explains why Kamara gets in ahead of Varane, Saito ahead of Smyth and you've got the likes of Edwards who can turn it on. Plus if we are developing players like Scarlett then it's still part of the (or our) modus operandi. [Post edited 18 Sep 18:01]

Our team at the moment is very good at patterns of play to get up the pitch, but JS has already said, after Charlton, that they need to brave in the final third. Beat a man etc, so flair is still needed.

Yeah I think that’s a fair definition on the pitch. Doing ridiculously difficult things effortlessly, like Adel’s pass with the outside of his boot to Rutledge and Wegerlie waltzing through the entire Leeds defence. To be a Maverick you have to be that flair player but a bit ‘different’ off the pitch. So I think we have a couple of potential flair players but no mavericks at the club. | | | |

Its not a binary question.
At the end of the day does a player with all his attributes, baseline, positive and negative improve the team for a specific match more than any other player for that particular position.
There are many variables involved. The more imbalanced a player is in respect to positive/negative attributes, the more work needs to be done to balance the team to include them.
In Kolli's case he has one positive attribute, shooting, a number of baseline attributes(average speed, ball control etc) and many more negative imho(poor fitness, inconsistency, poor tracking back, inability to stay on his feet under pressure leading to poor ball retention). Anyone who describes him as a flair player obviously doesn't understand the term "flair". [Post edited 19 Sep 10:39]

Capable of game-changing brilliance but often quiet and either dismal or just not at all bothered defensively. Messi worked too hard to be one. Berbatov rarely broke a sweat. Being flawed off the pitch helps but isn’t mandatory.

I agree with your broader definition of flair players. Not everyone has to be Rodney Marsh.
I think we've always had flair players for two reasons:
1. They attract new fans to the club
2. They compensate for the complete lack of success of the club |  |

From memory Taarabt was not only our best flair player when we won the Championship, he was actually the best player in the division that season. That I feel is the difference between him and Eze as I don't feel Eze was ever the best player in the division. As good as Eze was for us, I don't think he reached the levels of Taarabt under Warnock. Taarabt was a match winner and he was often the difference in us winning or not. Since Eze left we have not had a real game changer with that added quality of creativity and finishing and recent final league positions shows that.
Anyway haven't we been saying since the 70's that flair players are not appreciated by managers? Think back to Don Revie as England manager and how many caps players like Bowles and Worthington got. We want to see them but managers have other ideas. |  | | |
